Perhaps you've programmed other keys for this?

TIA.
I use the up and down arrow keys every day, no problem. But I have standard US layout keyboard.
Your 'qc' layout must be doing something wrong.
Hm... I'll try aliasing the arrow keys in .XDefaults...
Thanks.
@Other French-Canadian "Querkysts" :)

As it turns out, on this qc keyboard provided by BarryK, the up and
down arrow keys used to display the history of commands in urxvt
are the ones on the keypad (numbers 8 and 2); they are active with
the NUM key off (i.e. when the #1 LED is off).

Hello again,all.

OOTB, Querky-8.2 comes with very few GTK2 themes.

The attached theme engines, compiled from source expressly for Quirky,
will let you use any Equinox or Murrine theme from
https://www.gnome-look.org/browse/cat/136/ord/latest or from
the Deviant-Art site, with proper rendering.

An example is also attached.

Enjoy!

Hello all.

This is a bit of a touchy matter. Because I use urxvt's fading and
transparency capacities a lot in my scripts, I re-compiled urxvt-9.22
with "enable-everything" -- except for the perl hook.

Of course, with almost everything enabled, it's 1.12 Mb, compared to
Barry's compilation of urxvt-9.20 at 337 Kb.

This isn't to offend anyone, I had a need for it, that's all. I'm making
it available to anyone interested, for the next month, as
urxvt-9.22_exec64.pet, at
http://www19.zippyshare.com/v/avVIizWG/file.html.

I compiled it for Quirky from the dev's source at
http://software.schmorp.de/pkg/rxvt-unicode.html.

A screenie is attached.

I downloaded the file shortly after midnight and it came down as an xz
file, clicked on the file and it unpacked.
I used an installer from the first Quirky Xerus 8.0 and modified it
slightly, the original is here:

# dd if=xerus64-8.0.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4M
# sync

It made the 2 partitions on the 32gb flash drive, later I used gparted
on another computer and resized the 2nd partition to the proper size.

Anyhow, I have the new version 8.2.2 version :)

Re: 8.2.2

Just "thinking outside the box" here.
It might seem a daft question at this late stage in the game
and I know it's been a long tradition with Puppy & Quirky
all these many years as I follow Barry's efforts myself,
but why is it necessary to still have TWO window managers
JWM and JTK running in parallel with all the overlapped
tweaking facilities going on?

All that extra work loading does is make my dual core laptop
run hot, cos I can feel the top plate and hot air coming out of
the side vent which doesn't happen with single-WM distros.

To save undue stress on the electronics, perhaps it's time to step
back and have a re-think on the bigger picture and thus
the general way things are done.
The internal fan is going much to fast as I type.

The other thing I often ponder, is why is there no effort
to assist the longevity of the distro in terms of
self-updating of SeaMonkey browser.
It'll be stuck at v2.48 until the next updated Quirky release
comes along.
It's the short browser life that puts the brakes on lifespan.

At least Palemoon has an updating server standing by
in the older Quirky 7.0.1, which will keep the distro
ticking along for a few more years yet.

Best regards.

Thanks for that. The odds are in favour of it being OK.

The 8.2.2 flash stick image has a traditional MBR and partition table, with the first partition a fat32 esp partition. According to the UEFI spec., that is ok.

A drive with GPT (GUUID Partition table) is good for drives over 1TB, so not essential for flash sticks.

With GPT, I have been plagued by the secondary GPT at the physical end of the drive. This is the cause of so much trouble when copying an image file to a different sized drive.

:?: As far as I know, there's no such thing as a JTK window manager... do you mean GTK, perchance? If so, GTK is not a window manager - it's a programming language "toolkit" that is used to draw all of the visible stuff inside of the windows provided by the window manager (JWM). Your hot-running issue probably lies somewhere else... maybe try running top/htop to see what process(es) is using so many CPU resources.

@Rodney Byne:

Moat's answer covered your question about the JWM / GTK tandem.

I'll try to address your question about SeaMonkey's updates vs
Palemoon's.

To get this out of the way, I'll say that we're quite lucky to have a master
compiler such as BarryK to build the most recent SeaMonkey-64bit for us.
I happened to look at the SM site today, and
1) version 2.48, which Quirky has, is not offered there yet, only v. 2.46,
plus
2) there is only one 64-bit SeaMonkey-2,46 on the SM site, offered by
someone from the CentOS distro,

Now, to address your question of updates and longevity of a browser.

In my case, I am still running Opera 12.16, which is +/- 5 years old now,
as my daily browser, and I am quite happy with it. In the rare case when
I cannot load a site with this old Opera, I switch to the recent Vivaldi.

There's nothing wrong, IMO, with running an older browser if it does the
job well. "If it works, don't fix it," right?

If we're talking about security, keeping one's browser up to date is not as
important as keeping ADBlock, UBlock or Ghostery up to date, as well as
having the most recent hosts file.

And of course, cleaning your browser cache regularly, doing regular
back-ups, and generally, applying common-sense safety practices to
your computing.

Hi, Barry.

I just read your blurb about my MRUF-lst history script.

Thank you very much for including it in Quirky "xerus" for testing.

It's come a long way, but I'm sure it can use more testing -- and no doubt
more "sanding of the remaining rough spots!"

As well, developers have used all sorts of ways to store the history of
their apps, so development of this MRUF script is going to present
constant challenges as the history of these apps are added.

Also, I designed it to have room in it for further localization, in Spanish,
German, etc. If anybody is interested, PM me? TIA.

barry i'm getting a 403 forbidden trying to open/access either of the htm files in your xerux-8.3 directory.. Maybe i'm too early but I was about to play with 8.2.2 when I saw this become visable.

I'm having fun using the isobooter package and .iso's. Well worth playing with.

@BarryK:

Short test report --

I installed Quirky-8.2.2 to a 16 Gb "Kingston Data Traveler 50" thumb
drive having potential for USB 3.1, 3.0, and 2.0.

No problem booting into it on this old HP Compaq 6715b, which isn't
equipped with UEFI.

After initial configuration and reboot, Quirky developed the sdb2 partition
to occupy the remaining space on the thumbdrive, as you mentioned.

Also, SeaMonkey is not sluggish on this fast thumb drive. (I was using a
cheap Lexar 8Gb before.)

However, there appears to be a bug if choosing the "modesetting" driver
for Xorg. In this mode, I found that no icons were displayed on the
desktop, only the titles.

On initial boot, they showed fine, but I ticked the xorgwizard square
because I wanted to use my larger, 1920x1080, screen, instead of the
notebook's 1280x800 screen. I shouldn't have ticked that box!

Upon reboot, at the xorgwizard CLI panel, the ati driver seemed not to be
able to kick in, even after I reset the choice to "none", which should have
rebuilt xorg.conf. I had to resort to "modesetting".

IHTH.

I just now looked at them on ibiblio, no problem. Anyone else got this problem?

Not getting much success with video for 8.3 on decent modern HW. CTRL-BKSPCE-DEL not reliably functioning but can get there with one of the menu options. No satisfactory resolutions working with any settings, drivers, w.h.y. This is unusual for all other distros, Puppy or other on this system. Probably not a good idea to set default resolutions so high (19..x...)?
Far too many options trying to cater for too many possibilities/requests. Surely this is/was not what the mutt is/was all about? K.I.S.S. still pertains even for ground-breaking and experimental stuff? Disappointing so far. A 32bit version would be more valuable as it can be tested and run on a wider range of kit.

Hi Sage.

The KISS principle? The simplicity of anything depends on where
you're starting from, IMO.

The Quirky concept is different from the Puppy concept. It looks like a
Puppy, but it isn't.

I was taken aback, too, during the first few days. Once you accept
Quirky's difference, it gets easier. You have to "live with it" (so to speak)
for a few days, and then it becomes familiar.
