slacko-700 rc3

#301 Post by Billtoo »

I did a new build using an older woof-CE, I don't think the latest
testing or rationalise have been corrected yet.

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Wed 9 Aug 2017 on Slacko Puppy 6.9.9.9 Linux 4.4.80-pae i686
0.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] (rev a1)

X Server: Xorg Driver: nvidia
X.Org version: 1.18.3
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (707x392 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 430/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 384.59

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3550 CPU @ 3.30GHz
Core 0: @1600 1: @1600 2: @1600 3: @1600 MHz

Updated to latest kernel with the kernel kit, I think the method used
was correct, works good anyway.

That is a fine thing to accomplish, but how is that helping to discover bugs and issues, with Slacko 6.9.9.9, as it is posted here?

This version of Slacko is just about complete and ready for final release.
Now is the time to give this Puppy a good workout and uncover any issues not yet discovered!!!!
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected :shock:

@Billtoo

thank you for testing.
To test an older version ( unknown which exactly with an other kernel version ) is not helpful
or did I understand this wrong ?

The intel uxa workaround became added at 1st July ( commit 1d091bc ) and disabled at 6th August (commit d28d98d ) ( @jlst you are really quick )

So it would be a good idea to test the current testing branch.
Thank you for help

RC3 was posted on ibiblio June 13th,01micko last posted on this thread
Jun 30th.
Seems that RC3 could be the final release.

But I should have posted to the woof-CE thread instead of here I guess,
or not posted at all.

I do not think many Puppy developers have much time to work on Puppy.

01micko has a full time job.

Puppy is probably his hobby and works on it, when he can.

He does tend to hold off on a final release, until people have some time to really work with Release candidate versions.
This being RC3 tells me, he is making sure, some fixes he did to RC1 and RC2, got everything needed.

He is a prime developer with Woof-CE.
He could be holding off final release, because of some new improvements, he knows are in the works for Puppy, core files/programs.

Only he can tell us!

I think it could be helpful to let O1micko know (if he doesn't already)
that the kernel has been updated 10 times since RC3 was released.
Most likely lots of security updates etc in those 10 updates, the
updates are done for a reason I would think.

He might decide to compile the latest kernel for the final release.

Yep .. Lots of the smaller (not huge) music-making related packages are old Gtk1 things.. Plus some plugins and stuff..

Quick manual frugal install.

No problems yet. Haven't done much yet but I'll do some testing over the weekend, hopefully.

INTEL GPU ONLY !
appendix:

because config file for intel graphics ( to change to "uxa" acceleration method ) has been removed,
it could be that your intel GPU get hanging or X-server get freezing in very rare cases ( like here ).

In this case you could install the attached "intel-uxa-accel" package as temporary solution..
It only contains the 20-intel.config file to use the uxa acceleration method.
Don't forget to restart the X-server after package installation.

Hello, Norgo

I did a manual frugal install of your snapshot, slacko-700-RC3_k.4.4.70-PAE_2017-08-09.iso

Installed:conky,easytag,bleachbit,lxtask,lxterminal,Uextract,aisleriot,hplip-3.16.5-i586-3,smplayer,smtube,redshift,peasyscan-2.9 & ALL DEPS for these.

Symlinked these from /mnt/home, that are shared with other pups:
palemoon-27.4.1, firefox-52.3.0_ESR,thunderbird-52.2.1, goldendict

Loaded these sfs's> iron-59.0.3100.0-i386.sfs, audacity-2.1.3-s-i686.sfs & devx_slacko_6.9.9.9.sfs

btw, I made your audacity-2.1.3-s-i686.pet, into an sfs, and it works very well as expected.

I rebooted, made a savefolder, then squashed it into an adrv that is being used atm.

Here is the machine it's on:

Code: Select all

I'm pleased to finally have a slackware-14.2 based pup.
So far everything is working very well.

Thank you, very much

James C and festus, thank you very much for feedback.

I only created the the ISO,
the thanks goes to jlst, 01micko, ninaholic, gyro, woodenshoe-wi, zigbert, mavrothal, peebee, 666philb, rserwin ....

Really awesome work !!!

@festus
wow, you already tested a lot of applications, thank you.
Up to now without errors, this sounds very good.
Slacko 700 will become one of the best distro we ever had ( it's my opinion )

waiting for the final version .... :-)

up to now we've had 122 downloads of the ISO
but only 2 feedback's :-(

A couple of suggestions:

1)

Code: Select all

cd /mnt
A right click on a disk partition should show a pfind search of the partition

_______________________________________________

2) Make a change in /root/.configure/rox.sourceforge/OpenWith/
The pmusic located there should have the command

Code: Select all

pmusic  -a "$@"
This would make it easier to make a pmusic play list.

You could put in German help files using the method I outlined
here.

Simple Samba Management is used by Barryk in Xerus.
It simplifies Samba a bit.

A pkg that would be useful in case one hooked up an external monitor to a laptop is lxrandr.

I installed lxrandr-0.3.1-i486-1.pet from ppm. For some reason after the install, the entry didn't show up in the menu, so I reworked the pet's icon in the .desktop file and that did the trick, and works well.

Here it is, if one would want it:

Thanks, that's great.. Worked nicely, but the gui froze after i changed my settings, but i loaded it through the terminal and then used Ctrl-C to kill it.. so no biggie..

Does anyone have trouble making sudo work in the latest Slacko woof builds?

I have tried running a few apps as spot, but it never accepts the password for root, even if i change or delete roots password..

Hi

To run applications as spot I edit the hidden .spot-status file in the
root directory and then run QuickSetup first-run settings in the setup menu.

.spot-status
firefox=true
seamonkey=true
mplayer=true
kodi=true
vlc=true

All entries =false before running QuickSetup first-run settings.

Maybe you're talking about something else.
