pMusic, Pcd, Peasy DVD should be enough without adding VLC

#601 Post by Pelo »

about multimedia players, each Puppy should have included necessary stuff for playing CD, DVD, or files.
pMusic, Pcd, Peasy DVD should be enough with MPV for video. Test will be done With puppy_puduan_7.0.0a1 to day (sailor enceladus)

Puppy Linux has the chance to Have his own devs for apps. I want to keep them active. Merci Sigmund Berglund !
They are so useful, with lot of pets that they share with everybody. There are the Puppy Linux Force

Installation of OS is a step, but then what will you do with it..
Devs will go and install a new one, But passengers will not satisfy with vintage apps. and will ask for an Help desk, to answer their questions.

+1 For Dpup Stretch official

I Woof'ed a basic Puppy Stretch 7.0.0a1 and it looks pretty good. Have an issue with static sound, but newer Pups seems to have issues with this laptop.

Debian and offspring seems to be hot right now, gaining in popularity. The rise of the Dogs, and AntiX recently overtook Puppy on Distrowatch rankings. So it is the highest ranked lightweight frugal distro now. Need to give 'em some competition.

Just wanted to document that I have tested to see if VLC 2.2.6 will compile against the native ffmpeg 3.x libraries in Stretch. Unfortunately it will not.

This means that the rollback of ffmpeg libraries to 2.8.11 in my build environment which I used with VLC 2.2.4 and again with my build of 2.2.6 is still required.

This also means that the older ffmpeg libraries have to be included in the VLC package in a non-PATH location and VLC has to be launched via a wrapper script which gives priority to the older libs over the newer (system) ffmpeg libs. Obviously these libs do increase the VLC package size somewhat.

The created wrapper script is named as "vlc" in /usr/bin with the original binary vlc renamed as vlc-bin and called by the wrapper. This method is working beautifully for me, with VLC loaded as an .sfs package and running flawlessly, but for anyone else testing they may wish to keep in mind the steps I have taken. Some adaptation may be required to other people's individual system configurations.

PPM may offer an alternative but it will probably want to drag in all sorts of dependencies. The VLC website still has the status in Debian Stretch as "in testing". If anyone can come up with a better or more universal solution for a Stretch Puppy build then I would like to hear about it.

Debian OS lighter than Puppies

#606 Post by Pelo »

About DebianDog Stretch, i am with it right now, caution.!
Puppy Linux was known to trim the fat and release very light OS, however full featured.
The Dogs team is getting his Debian OS lighter than Puppies, and with the necessary apps for home usage, by the family

on the other hand, Puppies by tuxx or enceladus run very well. Which one will do public release ? Why not both of them..
The guy ready to help uploaders should be elected .We need mechanics, not only engineers whan we buy a car..
Brainstorming is good, but not enough to keep Puppy Linux in the charts :!:

Hello Oscar and everyone.

On page 3 of this thread, towards the bottom, you wrote:
OscarTalks wrote:My Wheezy VLC is in http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks but I haven't tried it in Stretch. I compiled MPlayer with GUI and that was fairly simple, latest snapshot from svn is always better than latest release.
MPV opens as a "GUI" window from the menu entry if you edit the .desktop file
I made a sfs of it. It's available here for the next month:
mplayer-37926-i686-stretch.sfs
http://www118.zippyshare.com/v/ZtLPxj0D/file.html

It works fine as a sfs too.

Startup folder applets not launching at startup
rcrsn51 wrote:Open the file /usr/sbin/delayedrun and locate the block of code at the end. There are several versions.

Code A (currently in Stretch) is completely broken and prevents the applets in the Startup folder from launching.

Code B (in some old Puppies) launches the applets but has a bug. It leaves orphaned "delayedrun" processes.

Code C above is the correct version.

Code D is a cleaner correct version.

Code: Select all

if [ -d /root/Startup ]; then
 for A in /root/Startup/* ; do
	$A 2>/dev/null &
  sleep 0.2
 done

Thanks rcrsn51 :!:
(It looks like pemasu got this fix into woof-ce after ttuuxxx built the last released .iso, so next woof-ce build should be fixxed)

The stretch-7.0.0a1.iso from ttuuxxx is missing the gtkhash utility found in some puppy versions.Get it here.
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/ma ... 4_i386.deb

Hell, while I'm at it and since this thread seems to be deserted, I will add what I find that runs in ttuuxxx latest.

truecrypt 7.1 runs ok, you can get the links here

Its solid, just the little issues mentioned with fixes supplied. Just using the debian stretch repositories for software and libs.

This debian stretch is on its way to replacing precise as my daily driver.

Too bad it seems abandoned, ttuuxxx & company did a nice job with this and it was close to being finished. Wouldn't be hard to remaster
with the fixes to make a final release. But would not be "official" :?

Locator from Geoffrey runs fine on ttuuxxx debian stretch. I have been using the version 3.5
of Locator though there is a newer release posted in the thread. Locator is a tiny program that
provides a quick route to google maps with all the optional sat views etc.

There is an issue with the version of librsvg2-2_2.40.16 in debian stretch that interferes with the
initial display in the Locator window - but that can be clicked through with one click which
transfers the chores to your default browser.

The fix to show the initial display as designed is to downgrade the librsvg version in /usr/lib/ to librsvg2-2_2.36.1
which fixes the initial display. IMHO Locator is a very cool little program. 8)

To apply the fix see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 2&start=29 and follow instructions
to install the 32-bit librsvg from precise, links to appropriate librsvg provided in that post.

Like I said, Locator runs ok without these changes to the librsvg libs but the changes make it run as designed
by Geoffrey. No ill affects noted so far from the lib substitution, if I see any issues will report it here.

Thanks Geoffrey :!:

Dogradio from fredx runs great on ttuuxxx debian stretch.
It requires one package available from debian stretch repository to run. This the best internet radio program I have ever seen.

dogradio available here

Hosted by stemsee - Thanks stemsee :!:

Libs needed for dogradio available here

Newer version 0.0.7 can be downloaded from here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 152#932152

I'm surprised btw that you need libaudclient2 and libxmmsclient6
I thought just yad , mplayer and conky are required.

Does not need libaudclient2 and libxmmsclient6, thanks for straightening me out :!:

Fixed my other post to reflect that.

Thanks fredx!

Have a look at radiotray available in the Debian repositories (apt-get install radiotray) as a possible alternative to DogRadio. Running it adds a aerial type icon to the tray and right click ... configure radios ... you can add/edit/remove stations as desired.

Fine, but I think it is good to support app/util development done on the forum - most of which are tiny and can be used/modded to work on either Puppy itself or on the various Dogs. Otherwise, just use full Debian and what Debian provides and don't bother with development work here so just close the forum! :-)
