Even my Dpup I made & released some months back stunk because Ttuuuxxx has more skill in his pinkie than I do in my whole body :cry:
2 things Belham at least you had a go and your Dpup I believe I tried and it was very usable. With regards to developers - Sailor Enceladus is no slouch either - his Puduan is most usable and stable for a modern Puppy.

Yes.
Although, I would avoid rebase in a collaborative project.

Yeah OK, merge to be safe..

If you are working alone on a branch (a feature or bugfix branch in your fork) it may be OK to rebase, otherwise be very careful..

Fomr the page mavrothal linked to:
So, before you run git rebase, always ask yourself, “Is anyone else looking at this branch?

@mavrothal

Thank you for the break down, that helps me understand the areas covered in Woof a little easier. The only section I've used is the kernel-kit. I'm quite fond of it, I used it to compile my first kernel and it's only got easier and more streamlined to use since then.

@sc0ttman

Wow, I really appreciate you replying each part of my post. I have literally been having some of these thoughts for years since I read Iguleder's first post :lol:
At work we use the "get hit by a bus" method.. If Phil, 01micko, mavrothal and others were hit by a bus tomorrow, then who could step in and immediately continue the work they would have been doing?
It's interesting you should mention this as I often find myself chasing Jemimah's bug fixing trail across the forum. Thankfully she did post her fixes as she found them, so I try do the same. Obviously though if we were using a formalized bug issue tracker with patches (sorry, I don't know what that system is called) the fixes would be easier to identify.

I think my point in asking if a Woof-CE Xenial build would end up exactly like Phil's is I was wondering how much of his work was recorded back into git. I suppose that could be a project, putting all his changes that didn't make it back upstream.

@all

This discussion has been useful. I'm sorry that often the answer has already previously been given, but the revised phrasing sometimes helps it get through my thick skull a little better with each rereading.

woof-CE needs you

#1085 Post by Billtoo »

I installed the Slacko64 that uses the 4.9.30 kernel, then created a
work64 on the hard drive and did a rationalise build of xenialpup64
using the 4.9.15 kernel.
This morning I booted Slacko64,opened the work64 directory and used
the kernel kit to build the 4.9.49 kernel, copied the new kernel to huge
kernel directory and did ./3builddistro-Z to build a new xenialpup64.

root# inxi -bw
System: Host: puppypc27121 Kernel: 4.9.49 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: JWM 2.3.6 Distro: xenialpup64 7.0.8.4
Machine: Device: desktop System: Hewlett-Packard product: p7-1246s serial: MXX232077R
Mobo: Foxconn model: 2ADA v: 1.00 BIOS: AMI v: 7.12 date: 06/07/2012
CPU: Quad core Intel Core i5-3550 (-MCP-) speed/max: 1600/3301 MHz
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GF108 [GeForce GT 430]
Display Server: X.org 1.18.4 driver: nvidia tty size: 133x25 Advanced Data: N/A for root
Network: Card-1: Ralink RT5390 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe driver: rt2800pci
Card-2: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: r8169
Drives: HDD Total Size: 3000.6GB (0.5% used)
Weather: Conditions: 55 F (13 C) - Clear Time: September 11, 9:54 AM EDT
Info: Processes: 201 Uptime: 1:05 Memory: 675.8/12037.2MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.8
root#

I installed the proprietary nvidia driver.
inxi shows 675.8 memory usage while kodi, palmoon, and a couple of
smaller applications are running.

This result is kind of magical (to me at least) since I am not a
developer (just a puppy user) and can use woof-CE as a self-serve puppy
builder (slacko and xenialpup at least)

I'm sure woof-CE will get even better as new developers contribute to
it but it's not bad right now in my opinion :)

Hi all,

Does anyone know if woof-CE or ibiblio is down today/tonight? I tested many things off ibiblio, and it seems fine. I've been trying to do a few builds, and no matter what I test (whether in the "testing" branch and/or the "rationalize" branch, any 32 or 64 bit build, whether slacko, ubuntu, debian, etc), I am greeted with the exact same response as shown here (using stretch as the example):

There is no Packages-Puppy-Stretch-Official repository on ibiblio.....

It is however on github:

so just press return and carry on....

ibiblio is up with no problems....

says that this repo is actually on:

is it still there????

Hi Peebee,

Thanks for the quick reply. I did push on through, with two builds (one dpup, the other xenial), and each time it brought back a whale load of "FAIL" messages in terms of looking for stuff needed. I didn't ever remember seeing that before in all the builds I've previously done, so I stopped. So just push on through that too? Well I just did, and the building process stopped because no packages could be downloaded as they were not found/listed. So what the heck???

Darn, I am really confused now..... :cry:

I did a new rationalise build of slacko 6.9.9.9 while running slacko64.
# uname -ra
Linux puppypc27789 4.4.88-pae #1 SMP Sun Sep 17 16:14:17 EDT 2017

Computer
Processor 2x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8135 @ 2.40GHz

Machine Type Physical machine
Operating System Slacko Puppy - 6.9.9.9
User Name root (root)
Date/Time Sun 17 Sep 2017 09:13:17 PM EDT
Display
Resolution 1680x1050 pixels
OpenGL Renderer Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV610 (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.8.0)
X11 Vendor The X.Org Foundation
Audio Devices
Audio Adapter HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
Audio Adapter PC-Speaker - pcsp
Audio Adapter USB-Audio - Sound Blaster X-Fi Go! Pro

I used the UEFI Installer - Flash Drives to a 32gb flash drive.
I installed all the usual applications with PPM,also added radky's JWMDesk-2.4.pet and JWM_themes_update-2.0.pet to make things look nice.

I couldn't get the internal speaker of the Imac working so I'm using an usb sound card which
is working perfect.

The savefile is limited to 4gb, using the resize personal storage file utility screws it up totally.
There's still 2.8gb free after adding quite a few applications.

FIXED by https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... 241dd2d5ad - thanks

Anybody else noticed that the:

pfix=nox
pfix=xorgwizard

kernel boot switches do not work on any recent pups?

They do work on xenialpup-7.0.8.1 but unfortunately it's /etc/DISTRO_SPECS does not have a BUILT_FROM_WOOF line....

They don't work on slacko-6.9.9.9 (BUILD_FROM_WOOF='testing;762210b;2017-06-13) or any more recent pups that I've tried.

:( :? :cry: :?:

I'll raise an issue on github.....

It would appear that is a problem of the new init. /initrd/tmp/bootinit.log shows
touch: /pup_new/tmp/xwin_xorgwizard_cli: No such file or directory
touch: /pup_new/tmp/bootcnt.txt: No such file or directory

woof-CE needs you

I did a new xenialpup64 build and did a manual frugal install to the hard drive of my Acer laptop.
I have it connected to a lcd monitor by hdmi.
I found a 1600x900 and a 1920x1080 jpg and used peasy glue to put them side by side.

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Sat 23 Sep 2017 on xenialpup64 7.0.8.4 Linux 4.9.51-x86_64

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 430 @ 2.27GHz

I have to add "intel_pstate=disable" to the kernel line of the menu.lst file to get the CPU Frequency Scaling Tool
Working.

It's working great.

See here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 648#968648

Marv posted fixes and kernel config changes that improve the CPU scaling
and fix the intel_pstate stuff...

These changes should probably make in into any future kernels we build (as
far as I understand it)

Hmmm, interesting sounding app. I'm a real potential fan of cherrytree - potential in the sense I've looked at it and liked its great import/export capabilities so planning to adopt it once I stop being as busy as I am at the moment. But now, this app confuses my choice of what to use a bit. I'll probably still use cherrytree but I like that the app you are posting about seems to use separate files, so a bit more like a simple document management system, whereas cherrytree seems to keep everything in one big file (though can link to any file on the system, so that's very attractive concept too).

Basically, I keep planning to organise my life but too busy to get started on that usually...

Hi Doglover,

Do you mean when you tried to boot the iso you created? If so:

- Which puppy did you try to build? (slacko, tahr, debian.... 14.2, 14.1.... 32-bit, 64-bit)
- Which OS did you use to build it with?
- How did you try booting it (CD, HDD, Flash) and what program did you use to boot the iso?
- Did you use the instructions on post 1 in this thread?
- Which kernel did you select?
- Guessing that you used the default testing branch?
- Guessing that all the required files are in your boot directory (initrd.gz, vmlinuz, *puppy.sfs, zdrv*.sfs)?
- What are the specs of your CPU? Does it support 64-bit and/or PAE?
- Does the distroname you tried to build boot if you use the official iso instead of the one you made?

I wasn't able to build xenial64 using xenial64-7.0.8.5 as a base for some reason so just used slacko64 to build it then using that xenial64 to build itself worked.
