Hi Peebee & all,

In an effort to stop the sabotage that the included jwm is causing in Zestypup (it's extensive, Peebee, and needs addressed before anything else), I installed Radky's FbBox-5.0 and added the same things I did the first time in testing Zesty originally (ditching the adrv, adding Slimjet+Slimjet-SilentLaunch, RedshiftGUI & Sakura).

Radky's FbBox is great, but it is running into the same similar horror since it has to interact with JWM. For example, went to change the background image, next thing I knew JWM just deleted ALL of Radky's background images (which he provides many, some truly nice) out of the background folder & reset crap back to as if FbBox wasn't installed. That was just the beginning. Nearly doing anything is setting JWM off on some freak re-setting show

I don't know what happened on the build for Zesty, but there is a very nasty bug with JWM. I have long said (and was excoriated for it, even received private messages on murga from whom I can only assume is the developer of JWM) that there is no reason that Puppy has to be wedded to JWM.

In my opinion, Peebee, your Lx-based pups are rock solid, and are just as much a puppy as are/is JWM. Go with your heart. Translation: ditch JWM and go back to the rock stabillty of Lx.

Runs well on all my 64bit machines but fails to boot on 32bit AMD2400+ machines??? D/l OK, other Puppies OK, tried nV & Radeon cards, etc.
"mount of p..._z..._17... .sfs failed Error too critical." There is a debugsave available, but a bit long; could send by PM if required?

Version 17.10.02 tackles some/most? of the issues raised so far - thanks everybody!

Apply delta to 17.01.01 - 17.10.02 iso md5 after generation should be: 47d6dd8fe4c8754e5d06fafa570994dd

- errant JWM themes removed, jwmconfig3 removed, just Ptheme and JWMDesktop remain in menu - I don't get any errors with what's remaining - FbBox seems to now be OK in my quick test....

- help / yelp issues sorted but yelp bodge is rather nasty so needs some further work

- menu tidying

Not tackled:

- zigbert's radeon problem - think it's missing firmware which was included in the xenialpup zdrv but is not in my fdrv - thinking about what to do....

- mavrothal's service settings (which I'm still trying to understand....) and bigpup's screensaver default
ImageLxPup = Puppy + LXDE
Main version used daily: LxPupSc; Assembler of UPups, ScPup & ScPup64, LxPup, LxPupSc & LxPupSc64

Some reports on what exact hardware you try it on, should help to find out what minimum requirements are.

Developer has already stated has limited hardware, so help with exact detailed specific hardware info.
Processor
RAM
Graphics hardware
Wifi make&model
Printer make&model
Etc.......
On my Pentium M 750 laptop, I noticed that GNOME-Mplayer skipped a lot when listening to an album (saved as mp4) in the background when I had Firefox open too. I didn't have this problem in any other puppy before, not sure if it's because the 4.9 kernel is not as single-core friendly or Firefox 56 has higher precedence over other programs or something else, but I found that going into GNOME-MPlayer Edit -> Preferences -> Mplayer and unchecking "Drop Frames" and checking "Enable mplayer cache" made it play smoothly again to compensate. Just posting this observation/workaround in case anyone else has a similar issue.

Applied delta and also made new ZestyXFCE

#28 Post by belham2 »

Hi Peebee,

I applied the delta to the frugal installs of both Zesty original and also Radky's, and all JWM problems (that I can tell so far) seem to have gone away. So, with that good news, I decided to push on and make another new DE Zesty. Introducing ZestyXFCE. From Thunar on down, with a few touch ups needed, she is running great. 8)

17.10.02 looks good enough for beta here!

Regarding services, do not bother. If you still want to bother change permission to files (services) in /etc/init.d/ that you do not want to run at startup form 775/755 to 644.

Firstly, sorry I haven't contributed anything to this yet.. Too many fingers tied up in too many pies.. Not many pies even have puppies in them..

I do not think so. JWM is changing/improving and some configuration tools are not.
While making Akita, each time I updated JWM, I needed various manual fixes etc to make it work nice - usually in the puppy specific config tools..

But I agree with mavrothal, once JWM is working nice, it is great, especially as it gets more and more 'standards' compliant (handling xdg, menus stuff, dual screen, etc)..

Xfce is still much nicer is some ways (better 'keyboard only setups', easier tiled windows, whisker menu and multiple monitor management are great) ...

..but now I have JWM with lxrandr (to manage the multiple screens), i can't say I miss Xfce that much (except the whisker menu - and we do have radkys brilliant PupApps instead)..

... But really, I just wanted to put it out there that my new favourite thing about Puppys current JWM setup is the places menu (which wasn't there last time I used Puppy!)

Image

Whoever put it together (01micko? zigbert?) is awesome.

EDIT: Although Puppy STILL has trouble with exFAT partitions! .. the places menu doesn't show them, and Pmount shows it but won't mount it right, I'm guessing Zesty is the same..

Hello peebee and all.

I agree with wiak. Puppy's window manager jwm was decided 10 years ago
by BarryK because it suited his needs best at the time. The WM is
important, but it's still only an interface. As wiak says, the scripts and the
directory organization underneath define Puppy more than any single WM.
Along with the capacity for frugal install, I'd add.

In the past, some very successful Puppies have used icewm, in particular
tronkel's Puppy 3.02.

icewm is being actively refitted / modernized. It has a very active github
page here: https://github.com/bbidulock/icewm

If you need a menu for it, I am offering a menu script here.

Don't worry, it's not based on aemenu. But it's not an xdg-type menu
either. This menu resides in a single script, so you can't lose its parts. ;)

For those users who are superficial ;), there are exactly 422 themes for it
at https://www.box-look.org/browse/cat/142/ord/latest as of this writing.

Why not give it a try? My 2¢.

BFN.

Version 17.10.03

Apply delta to 17.10.01 - 17.10.03 iso md5 after generation should be: 0c1dc7f77bcf44a79517122e9c7d0e6f

- yelp improved
- radeon firmware added to fdrv for zigbert
- services disabled for mavrothal
- build improved - some redundant components removed - dependencies satisfied wherever possible ('checkdeps -system' now clean except for expected items)
- some new apps added

I've tried to get an icon for Light in the menu but have failed miserably - I don't really want to change the .sfs build as it is shared with LxPupSc (where the icon appears no problem...)

Desktop has no icon for trash.
Trash needs to have an icon on the desktop to work properly.
It is the way trash is designed to work.
It has no menu entry by design.

I know people keep trying to make desktops with no icons, but trash has to have one to work.

The trash desktop icon is the only way to put something in trash.
Drag and drop to icon.
Only way to get to trash options.
Right click on desktop trash icon.

Hey Bigpup,

Thought you'd be interested to know you do not need a desktop icon on the desktop itself for trash to work. Same goes for savesession icon. In many of my pups, I safely ensconce them inside either the upper and/or lower tray, so they are off the desktop and never hiiden by anything I have open. And I have full functions and access to them just as if they are on the desktop. Just takes some mods to xinitrc in /root, and a few other simple changes in their commands that open them.

What about the right click menu?
That is also a feature of the trash icon on the desktop.

Your idea is good, but how is it going to work if you make the tray hide?

The tray would need to be visible all the time.
I like to make the added tray hide, unless you move the mouse pointer to it.

If the tray is visible all the time.
What real difference, is it, just to have a trash desktop icon.

Sure seems like there are a lot of different programs offered (in the menu) to configure settings.

menu>Desktop
Desktop Settings
JWM DeskManager
Font Manager
Puppy Theme Manager

These two open the same program. (Pup Control)
menu>Setup>Puppy Setup
menu>Utility>Pup Control Panel

Pup Control covers just about everything.

What about having one entry for Pup Control and forget using the others with menu entries
Run them from Pup Control.

When clicked on get this message.
So, is it really needed at this point with no Java installed?

There is no get Java menu entry this message refers to.

Hi Bigpup,
good...morning!

Seems to do nothing.
Discovered this just by clicking on it to see what could happen ... :o
Once compton has been activated in the main menu (just click on the menu entry), the "displaying speed" of applications windows (example: click on the "home" icon in the menu tray bar) is "smoothed", and the outer limit of the window is a bit transparent, and somewhat shadowed.
Do not know how to dectivate it another way than Restart X; or using HTop/F9 ...
(Tryied to explain it with my own words... :? )
Best regards, Charlie
