Star Trek GTK, icons, & Wallpaper themes

#1 Post by bigpup »

This is a post for all things Star Trek.

If you have some themes for icons, GTK, or wallpapers, post them here.

Any ideas on making Puppy look like a Star Trek LCARS display.

" NOTE "
If any GTK themes make the font colors too hard to see in Rox file manager.
In Rox
options>colours
You can adjust the colors to your liking.
Just try to use something, correct for the theme being used.

GTK theme

It is a little dark.
A little color tweaking help if you know how, please.

Different look to how GTK shows stuff.

Download.
Unpack into directory LCARS-GTK
Place this directory in /usr/share/themes

Select the new theme by using GTK theme changer, usually in JWMDesk manager.

Note:
Color issues with Rox file manager.
See note in first post.

Its usually 'good practice' to keep user themes separate from system themes i.e. mkdir ~/.themes
download/move/copy the tar.gz file to that folder and extract there
tar -xzf 92578-LCARS-GTK-1.2.tar.gz

My 'Trekkie' drive icon set.....styled after a Klingon 'bird-of-prey', as requested by belham2. And quite well received, apparently..!

Bigpup has made a 'reduced size' version of this, here.....for those of you who like to 'keep it lean'.

Enjoy.

On this page is a nice 'open' hi-res picture of the LCARS engineering screen, with plenty of spaces left open to be filled. I am referring to the picture called 'Star Trek Computer'.

https://www.wallpapervortex.com/tv_movi ... page2.html

This could be used as a base picture, perhaps in combination with some widgets.

Install a full xterm rather than having it as a link to rxvt or whatever and you can set jwm so that xterm shows no window title/borders and doesn't appear in the trays tasklist ...etc. by using a jwm Group tag such as the following

<Group>
<Name>xterm</Name>
<Option>nolist</Option>
<Option>noborder</Option>
<Option>notitle</Option>
<Option>sticky</Option>
<Option>nopager</Option>
</Group>

You can then launch xterm setting the font colour, size and screen location using something like :

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
xterm +sb -geometry 88x31+60+60 -fg rgb:02/FA/FA -fa "xft:Dejavu Sans Mono:style=Bold:pixelsize=18" -e "mc /home/user/bin /home/user/Docs"
Note that the geometry sets the characters wide, characters height values (88 and 31 in the above and the +60+60 values above set the x and y screen coordinates for the top left. The -e is a execute command which above executes mc showing two panes, one open at ~/bin and the other at ~/Docs i.e. my personal script (binaries) folder and documents folders.

mc is old, but is still good as you can use the keyboard to scroll up and down/around, and Enter to launch ... or use the mouse. It has a range of themes to select from.

I have it set to start on boot and either I open additional xterm over that or tmux to create several xterm windows. If all the sessions are closed I have a background wallpaper that is in keeping with the theme. Takes a bit of fiddling around to get the right xterm geometry settings so that it aligns with the wallpaper and of course you more or less lock in to the single screen resolution.

For clickable text I just create icons with a transparent icon image, so only the text is visible (and in pcmanfm --desktop that I use instead of rox for desktop icon management you can also set the icon image size to be very small).

Lcars sounds.

Anyone know how to assign these sounds to actions, programs, etc....

Access Using Xarchive.
Select all.
Extract.
Will now have directory Lcars.
Sound files are in it.

Click on a file to hear it.

Here's my thinking ... anyone know of a easier alternative?

Have a desktop wallpaper that is set up like a imagemap, where regions can be defined and mouse events within those regions trigger specific actions. For instance a image of Captain Kirk sitting at the helm and a outline region around him set so a mouse click within that region opens a root terminal window; Another outline around the lift doors that if clicked initiates a reboot/shutdown dialog ...etc.

For simplicity, sticking with a fixed sized resolution (image) is appropriate, say 1280x800 monitor resolution and a 1280x800 image.

Install xbindkeys and xautomation ... for xev.
Use perhaps gpicview as the image display program to show the image, where gpicview is set in .jwmrc to have no title, borders (decorations) ... in effect becomes the 'desktop wallpaper'.
Open that image full screen and determine its window id using xwininfo and then fire up xev -id <window-id> in a terminal window to monitor that window (desktop wallpaper).
Now as you move the mouse and mouse click etc. xev reports all of that action and can be monitored for mouse click events and trigger actions ...etc.
Conveniently when you move outside of that window such as another window opened on top of a region, xev doesn't trigger reports of mouse actions, so mouse events intended for other programs wont falsely trigger 'desktop' actions.

There are other tools around that can overlay/change combinations of images so the 'desktop' could be interactive.

I haven't used xev previously, but from a quick 'test' is seems to work excellently. I am however mindful that there is probably already something out-there that is already waiting to plug-n-go that provides a similar clickable imagemap type desktop wallpaper function/purpose.

Opted for using Eterm and its transparency option. Not true transparency, it just takes a snapshot of the desktop as its background image (if the desktop changes then the changes aren't reflected in the Eterm window).

Added

Code: Select all

<Group>
    <Name>Eterm</Name>
    <Option>nolist</Option>
    <Option>noborder</Option>
    <Option>notitle</Option>
    <Option>sticky</Option>
    <Option>nopager</Option>
</Group>
to .jwmrc and I'm starting Eterm with

Code: Select all

Eterm --title EtermDesktop --no-cursor --visual-bell --font "-misc-fixed-bold-r-normal--15-140-75-75-c-90-iso8859-1" --geometry 109x44+60+60 --trans --shade 0 --buttonbar false --border-width 0 --scrollbar-width 0 --borderless true --scrollbar false --exec ./try.sh &
# Give it time to start
sleep 2
# and set it to be below other windows
wmctrl -r EtermDesktop -b add,below
Which on my setup provides a Eterm window with no borders over part of the screen and launches try.sh script which I copied from here that supports mouse clicks in a terminal window session.

So as good as a clickable desktop and where the mouse XY coordinates of where the desktop was clicked can be captured, tested and a associated action triggered. Currently if I click anywhere in the black region where The Spirit of Fire starship is it just pops up the X and Y mouse click coordinates excepting the red 'buttons' at the top that invoke other actions. I intend to extend that to remove the red buttons and set up click regions that invoke other events/tasks, likely using a different background (wallpaper) image.

Using multiple smaller Eterm windows strategically placed upon the desktop background image is a better way than a single full screen Eterm as that caters for leaving regions where mouse clicks aren't trapped, such as over gkrellm. I just have to get my head around that script I linked to above as its pretty deep/clever.
