Go first to
ftp://contrib@ftp.palemoon.org/SSE-Linux/
then click on the .tar.bz2 file. I just did it, downloaded just fine.

Pointer to Pale Moon SSE version |
|
greengeek wrote: | I would be keen to see a separate thread for an SSE version of Palemoon - it's a bit of a struggle to find which post references a suitable version for a PC that lacks SSE2.
As an alternative to a separate thread - could anyone link to a post which offers a version for SSE only CPU?
cheers! |
HI; I do an SSE contributed build for 32-bit linux Pale Moon. See Pale Moon forum thread https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=13530 Note that since this is not the mainstream build, (un)installation has to be done manually from the tarball. What I find easiest is to...
create a directory in my home dire, e.g. $HOME/pm
cd $HOME/pm
Download the current SSE tarball to $HOME/pm/ The current tarball URL is ftp://contrib:get@ftp.palemoon.org/SSE-Linux/palemoon-27.4.2SSE.linux-i686.tar.bz2
killall palemoon (as a precaution)
rm -rf palemoon This deletes/"uninstalls" the local Pale Moon in directory $HOME/pm/palemoon
tar -xvjf <tarball_name> This "installs" the local Pale Moon
The basic launch command is $HOME/pm/palemoon/palemoon (YES!)
Put that command into whatever menubar/program-launcher/etc you use.
This process installs in the user's home directory, and only the user can use it. If you change $HOME/pm/ to /opt or /usr/local, then all users can use it. I don't expect multiple users on a Pentium3-class machine (i.e. SSE-only)

That's right; the version number is part of the tarball name, so your method works best for handling the constantly changing names. I also update a dedicated thread on the Pale Moon forum as new versions are uploaded https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=13530

I've been using this version by Walter Dnes as backup browser in Slacko 5.7 for a while (the date on my download is July 17th). There are some things that work in Palemoon that don't in Firefox 28, then some other things that don't work in Palemoon and I need to use Firefox 52esr, then some things that don't even work in Firefox 52esr and I need to use Slimjet (rare). Normally I use Firefox 28 though because it seems the most stable. I uploaded a mirror of the Walter Dnes palemoon I downloaded here:

The password is "get". Here's how to do it in one line, by including it in the URL
ftp://contrib:get@ftp.palemoon.org/SSE-Linux/
My understanding is that this is intended to prevent search engines from constantly downloading it, and wasting bandwidth.

One cool thing about palemoon is that you don't have to worry about installing pulse audio so you can have sound. That's what put me off firefox

Pale Moon version 27.5.1 is available. This is a security and stability update to the browser, as well as fixing some issues users have indicated; see list at http://www.palemoon.org/releasenotes.shtml
Instructions for getting the mainstream release are at http://linux.palemoon.org/
The SSE-only build for Pentium3-class machines is available at URL ftp://contrib:get@ftp.palemoon.org/SSE-Linux/

I installed palemoon-27.5.1-p4-sse-glibc219tweak.pet in a new lucid (5.2.8.7-20170923) pup environment along with flashplayer, to test with a known video site. When I click to start playing a video, it plays normally. If I then close the tab or exit the browser, either by menu or "X", I see the following messages: Code: | /usr/lib/palemoon/plugin-container: line 3: 6890 Segmentation fault /usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/lib/ld-linux.so.2 --library-path /usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/lib:/usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/usr/lib:/usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/libstdc++:/usr/X11R7/lib:/usr/lib/palemoon /usr/lib/palemoon/plugin-container-exec "$@"
###!!! [Parent][MessageChannel::Call] Error: Channel error: cannot send/recv
###!!! [Parent][MessageChannel::Call] Error: Channel error: cannot send/recv

The segmentation fault seems related to the exit from a tab or browser with a plugin in use, so might be a broader problem than just for videos.
EDIT:
I installed the NoScript extension, which resulted in its being displayed in a new tab. But the xerrs.log showed those messages after logging 967 sets of messages: Code: | (<unknown>:25509): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_colormap_alloc_colors: assertion `GDK_IS_COLORMAP (colormap)' failed
(<unknown>:25509): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_modify_bg: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
(<unknown>:25509): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_get_visual: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
(<unknown>:25509): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_colormap_new: assertion `GDK_IS_VISUAL (visual)' failed
| But NoScript seems to work as well as ever.

You mentioned the SSE build, so I assume that you're running on a Pentium3-class machine, which does not support SSE2. Adobe Flash for linux has used SSE2 instructions for a long time. It will not work on a machine that doesn't support SSE2... period... end of story. What is the output of "cat /proc/cpuinfo" on the problem machine?

Thanks for pointing out the flashplayer constraint. I just now reran the flashplayer test with the non-SSE version, palemoon-27.5.1-p4-glibc219tweak.pet, receiving the same error messages: Code: | /usr/lib/palemoon/plugin-container: line 3: 5351 Segmentation fault /usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/lib/ld-linux.so.2 --library-path /usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/lib:/usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/usr/lib:/usr/lib/palemoon/glibc219/libstdc++:/usr/X11R7/lib:/usr/lib/palemoon /usr/lib/palemoon/plugin-container-exec "$@"
