@charlie6 : thanks for the excellent advice. It was right on the money
except
You know how it says REMARK: DO NOT edit /root/.jwmrc !
Well nothing happened when I clicked the lightbulb, until I place the code into the above file.
While I am here, A biggggg thanks to all the people who develop and help to develop all these different puppies

testing of ArtfulPup beta
I was trying to set QWERTY keyboard extended with backslash in Czech keyboard (which is default as QWERTZ) . QWERTY is more practical - it is more "international" and I use it for decades. I was successful only after several attempts but after it the part of keyboard with arrows, Page Up, Page Down, Del, End, Home and Insert, became dead. This problem is present in more linux distributions (but I do not remember them - I think also in Slacko).
There is possible to use translator in Google. There is also pronunciation of the words, incorporated in it, after clicking the icon for speaker (sound). There are differences in different linux distributions. In some, there is no icon, in others, there is dead icon, in some, the icon is normally functional like in Windows. In ArtfulPup, after the clicking the icon, the funny sound is expressed. The pronunciation is important for non native English speakers like me.
Anyway, the ArtfulPup seems to be fast in old machine and really good for everyday job.
Thank you for this hard work.

it was in Upup and Wary 511
Functions arrows bugs : it was in Upup and Wary 511 .
Bug is back ?
"keyboard with arrows, Page Up, Page Down, Del, End, Home and Insert, became dead."
I fully agree on listening translations. We become used to written English but not to Pronunciation. To practice the better is to speak with English people. Not easy sometimes.
Personnally i write messages in French, and it's a friend of mine who translate them.. he says Google translator is bad for learning.

hi peebee,
i have an old thinkpad r51 that won't boot PAE kernels.
however new kernels have the forcepae option and adding to kernel line gets it to boot. (note there's a space after -- )
maybe add a note on the first page, for people with old clunkers

python3 applications aren't running as there's a missing symlink
a fix for this is to add to /usr/local/petget/hacks-postinstall.sh
or just stick the symlink in the build
Code: Select all
ln -s /usr/bin/python3.6 /usr/bin/python3
Code: Select all
python3.6-minimal_*)
if [ -f /usr/bin/python3.6 ];then
ln -s /usr/bin/python3.6 /usr/bin/python3
fi

Palemoon
Using Palemoon, the Open Containing Folder option
after a download asks for a program.
This does not happen in Puppies where Palemoon
is the default browser,
and happens in many new Puppies (stretch, etc...)
where Palemoon is not.
Could there be a symlink missing?
Thanks!

/usr/share/applications/defaults.list might need this adding to it
Code: Select all
inode/directory=ROX-Filer-file-manager.desktop
Code: Select all

palemoon open containing folder
I've used Palemoon from extracted from tar.bz
and also the sfs, same result.
Choosing /usr/local/bin/defaultfilemanager when prompted
by Palemoon works well,
the setting can even be saved.
Modifying the defaults.list is fruitless
as far as i can tell.

I can not build an Artfulpup. No level. If I could I would in 64bit that checked in Tahr and Xenial I see better performance in graphics and video.
What a shame a actual, recent, project a day (October 2017) is reduced to only 32bit.
Sure no improvement plan for 64bit?
Artful frugal tested to complete satisfaction, except video jerking (64bit maybe?)

Trying Fossapup 64bit. Still daily work in Bionic64.
17.11 looks fine in a brief test.
pmcputemp does not have an ~/.config/Autostart or ~/Startup entry in the pet used so will not autostart.
BTW I was wondering if the omission of cryptsetup in the Artfulpups (~300k with libs - would allow LUKS encryption of the savefile) is intentional or just never bothered with it.
Either way you may want to add a note or something for the unaware, to suggest installation before the first shutdown so the option will be offered

No problems with 17.11 installing and using my usual stuff via PPM and
pets. I'll mention a oddity I noticed on previous versions as well. While
doing my initial work, and before creating a save folder, I left the computer
for well over 10 minutes ... and the screensaver didn't activate. It works ok
after save folder creation and reboot. I have no idea what significance this
might have ... probably none. But I thought I would pass on the info anyway.

There is an issue with the 'kill' command in ArtfulPup. It will not accept the signal 'continue' - SIGCONT - signal number 18.
This is used as pause-function in pMusic and works as expected in Slacko.
