Desktop mode

One of the more unique capabilities of both the Mate 10 and the Mate 10 Pro is how you can use it in a desktop mode. All you need is a USB Type-C to HDMI cable, which you use to connect the phone to a TV or monitor. You’ll immediately see a desktop version of Android on the big screen, but one of the benefits is the phone screen does not turn off — you can keep using your phone, and nothing will change on the desktop.

Wow - fantastic. Looks like the idea of "convergence" could finally be a usable reality. Maybe if/when I win the lottery... Cool

Yup, works but limited to an Android setup and apps, no root access! At least it has Android 8.

Mate 10 is 4gig of ram 64gig internal storage, but not all of either is available as some tied to your video "port" when in "hdmi mode", easy available as it's a phone you can at least buy outright at a decent cost.

Mate 10 plus has 6gig of ram and 128gig internal storage, with the same constraints. Would have loved to buy it since it had the extra ram, but in australia it's tied to an Optus plan and as Optus doesn't work up here in my area too well......

The other thing is don't whisper in the background when one of these is being used, it picks it up and enhances it to an audible voice as one of our friends daughters found out at the end of a party, very embarased girl for a while!

Other thing is you want to ask for the dual sim version if it's available, you can still use it as a single sim but it's nice to be able to change provider for a short time if needbe, like one is good for extra data.

Thanks cthisbear for that, I'd look into it except my samsung note 8 price has dropped to aud1145 from aud1350, if it drops a bit more it will finally be cost effective for the basic drawing and note capabilities I should have with me without lugging my 9.7" tablet about. It will also finally make it worth getting rid of my landline.

I was 'talking online' with Huawei after my last message, and they tell me there is a new version of the Mate 10 coming out called a Porche with 256G storage and 1 or 2 sim 'slots'. They've also said that their phones when with 2 sim don't have micro-sd capabilities unlike the latest Samsung's and a few others that allow slot2 to be sim or micro-sd. However if it's a single sim it can take the new micro-sd standard that allows up to 2tb and that is rediculously large for a card.

Next thing I expect too see is 8gig of ram! Considering some of the new phone processors have 8 cores with 4 at one speed and 4 at a slower speed plus 1 i7 core (yep an i7 in a phone). I wonder how long laptops will last after all with usb-c having dongles that give you Ethernet, HDMI in and out (I did see somewhere a 11.6" lcd portable (battery) screen somewhere last week) and a couple of usb3 ports, and bluetooth keyboard and mice available well .....

I just wish they would all have available a drop-in charger base instead of just that silly plug to charge with, and the induction chargers being (?deliberately?) heat sensitive and shutdown when it gets too hot,( with 40c+ days and 35c+ nights in summer here) we found they are a waste of time and money.

And i've just come across the DEXstation for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, just what you'd want for an office or home based system. Not cheap though, but does come down outsourced. http://www.samsung.com/au/support/model/EE-MG950BBEGWW/
