Perfect! .iso runs as a liveCD, no saves, BIOS machines, albeit time to make a cup of tea whilst it boots. The usually 'silent' majority may be hoping for a true 32bit live version for BIOS machines, as indicated in the recent Distrowatch Poll and Comments! Only a tiny minority of operators in the rich nations are messin' with tomorrow's UEFI/Secure Boot 8-core, 8Gb plastic tat in a fancy carry-case? 32bit runs on 64bit, the reverse isn't true...

Frugal install to internal HDD

Code: Select all

Product Name: XPS M1530

Motherboard Vendor: Dell Inc.
Product Name: 0XR148

BIOS Vendor: Dell Inc.
Version: A12
Release Date: 11/19/2008

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz

Memory Allocation:
 Total RAM: 2006 MB

Xorg Startup Log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log):
+ Xorg Driver in use: nouveau
+ Loaded Modules: dbe dri2 evdev exa extmod fb fbdevhw glx shadowfb synaptics
+ X.Org version: 1.19.1

VGA controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation G84M [GeForce 8600M GT] [10de:0407] (rev a1)
+ Kernel Driver: nouveau
+ Memory Used by Driver: 1328.00 KB
+ Video RAM: 256M
Not had any luck with a full install though. Tried it with the installer script, and later using the universal installer from the frugal install. Booting with Grub4dos with the generated menu entry. It finds the kernel then hangs.

Also, the devx pet will not load. Tried via PPM and also a manual download, but it complains that there is not enough space (there is plenty).
Network (wifi), and sound working correctly, although wifi not connecting automatically on bootup.

Decided to try the live cd as well.Looking good so I'll explore more later.

Wouldn't mind a 32 bit version as well because I'm still running a lot of old hardware too.

This is for the frugal install?

If you mouse-over the memory icon in the tray, how much free space does it show?

Ah, good that the nvidia nouveau driver is working for you!

Ah, you have success with nouveau as well!

Yes, I might do a 32-bit build. Firstly, need to import a few more packages into OpenEmbedded, then can run OE, configured to build 32-bit x86 binaries.

I ran the install script from Ubuntu.1710 Mate 64bit, it stopped at one
point wanting f2fs-tools, I installed that with synaptic and restarted
the script.
It installed to a 32gb usb 3.0 flash drive:

This is what I get:

Code: Select all

2.9G personal storage, free space 2.8G
The actual partition has about 73G free. This is with the frugal install (full install wouldn't boot up). The devx pet expands to just over 2gb.

Earlier today I installed Quirky Pyro64 to a 32gb SDHC card using the
same method as my 1st post above.
While running the SDHC card install I saw the EasyDD item in the setup section
of the menu and used it to install to a 32gb flash drive:

This new flash drive install (running from it now) booted okay on the
pc it was created on but it wouldn't boot on another pc that I tried to
boot it.

Creating the flash drive install took quite a while,it's a usb 3.0
plugged into a usb 2.0 port, approx 30 minutes.
****************************************************

EDIT: I moved the SDHC card install over to my Acer laptop, the touchscreen is working.
EDIT2: Found out moving the SDHC card doesn't work, network settings are not changeable now.
Going to do a fresh install to the card.

The install script worked fine, run from quirky xerus64 and installed to usb stick 32gb after zero out process.

This was: 4install-quirky-to-drive-mbr-esp and pyro64-0.5.usfs.xz
with uefi disabled in bios.

Tried first in debian stretch, but the debian syslinux-efi package put the efi mbr's in their own directory SYSLINUX.EFI. That is where scrpt stopped in debian.

For audio, had to amp up "speaker+LO" in retrovol.
Everything else working well.

This is amd phenom x2 ati platform.

I was mistaken about moving the SDHC card, I did a new install using
the install to partition script that suggests the proper grub4dos
menu.lst entry.

I'm using the SDHC card on my soon to be 10 years old Acer desktop:

Quirky Pyro64 version 0.5

#73 Post by L18L »

Installed to 8GB USB pendrive
4install-quirky-to-drive-mbr running from Easy succeded.
4install-quirky-to-drive-mbr running from Fatdog failed.
Reason:

Code: Select all

SIZEBYTES=`echo "$FDISKINFO" | grep '^Disk /dev' | cut -f 5 -d ' '` #141104
no value because there was no Disk but Festplatte.
Suggest:

Code: Select all

SIZEBYTES=`echo "$FDISKINFO" | grep -m 1 "/dev/${TARGETDRIVE}" | cut -f 5 -d ' '` #141104
to avoid language dependance.

----

edit:
4install-quirky-to-drive-mbr running from Fatdog with above change:

Code: Select all

# ./4*mbr
/usr/bin/which

This script will install Quirky to an entire drive, and make it bootable
with the Syslinux boot manager, for any x86 PC.
The intention is to install to pluggable memory drives such as USB Flash
sticks and SD-cards. The entire drive is erased, so take off any files that
you want to keep.
The script will ask questions at each step, and will offer a choice of
drives to install to, but of course it comes down to you to make an intelligent
choice and not erase your PCs internal hard drive!
This script should work when running any Linux distribution, however, it
works best when running a Puppy Linux or Puppy Linux-derivative, as Puppy has,
in my opinion, many superior utilities. However, this script will check for
existence or otherwise of those utilities and downgrade appropriately, or
abort if a missing utility is essential.

Press ENTER key to continue (CTRL-C to abort):

1 pyro64-0.5.usfs.xz

Type a number from the left column: 1
...ok, have chosen pyro64-0.5.usfs.xz

Testing integrity of compressed file, please wait...

Plug in a USB Flash drive, 4GB size, or greater, right now.
Also, please be sure that it is unmounted.
Note, 4GB is sufficient, however for a satisfactory ongoing experience
using Quirky, it is recommended to use a 8GB or greater drive. If you intend
to keep using this installation on a daily basis, to allow for plenty of
package installations, upgrades, downloads, etc., or installation of the
'devx' PET, it is essential to have at least 8GB.

WARNING: Many Linux distros will auto-mount a drive when it is plugged
in. You will have to unmount it BEFORE CONTINUING!!!
(if you are unsure about this, don't worry, the script will
check again later, after you have chosen the drive)

Have you plugged in the drive? Then press ENTER key:
which: no probedisk in (/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/opt/qt5/bin)

As you are not using a Puppy-derivative, you do not have the excellent
'probedisk' utility, which reports all drives. So, falling back to giving you
a simple list:

These are all of the drives found in your PC:
sda sdb sdc

Choose the drive to install to...
1 sda
2 sdb
3 sdc

Type a number from left column: 3
...ok, have chosen sdc

Uncompressing pyro64-0.5.usfs.xz to pyro64-0.5.usfs...

Final sanity check: 'sdc' is correct? (ENTER if OK, CTRL-C abort):

Some preliminaries on the sdc...
Size of drive=7680MB

Would you like to zeroize the entire drive before installation?
You should answer 'yes' to this if you choose to make a image-file
of the drive immediately after installation (this script will later offer
to do that) -- an image-file is useful for writing to other drives, or
to give to others. Zeroizing beforehand will make the image-file smaller.
NOTE: zeroizing may take over 30 minutes, depending on size of drive.
NOTE: Do not do this with a USB1 interface or via a USB-hub (too slow).
NOTE: Unless you really need to do this, recommend press ENTER to decline.
ENTER only to decline, (any other char to zeroize drive):
Size of drive has a value now.

You need only set TCLIBC = "musl" to enable building musl instead of glibc.
IIRC, Barry did an open embedded build with musl libc, but I cannot seem to find those results. Were they just discarded?

mimeinfo.cache needed for mypaint

#75 Post by don570 »

I discovered why mypaint 's external applications list doesn't form in Barry's Distros
as explained HERE and see image below..

It's because the file 'mimeinfo.cache' is needed to be placed in
/usr/bin/applications/

among the desktop files.

Mypaint uses that info to form a list. Other linux distros apparently have that file as explained here

I wonder could you run update-desktop-database when a new pet package is installed.

Just had a quick look at this release 0.5 and I was impressed. I was running it from the ISO in Qemu.
The only two things I noticed that were broken, no icon in the menu for precord and Inkscapelite didn't run. Other that that it seems to be working very well.

Quirky Pyro64 version 0.5 (alpha), Oct 28, 2017

#78 Post by ETP »

Hi Barry,

Thanks for this latest release.
Install was a frugal one using the ISO to my usual 3 partition 8GB USB template layout.
i.e.
#1st Partition 15MB fat16 boot partition. Label "ZIP16" (Prepared with HP Utility)
# 2nd Partition 300MB vfat/fat32 test media (If any) Label "pool" UUID=24A4-3777
# 3rd Partition 7.1GB f2fs for full install or main sfs, save folder etc. Label "system" PARTUUID=00060b5d-03

Your innovative Q_ID boot technique was used with the q.sfs and Q_ID placed on the 3rd partition.

Despite having > 25 partitions to search, that on first boot was found in only a couple of seconds and the desktop
reached about 10 seconds later. Both sound and ethernet worked OOTB with no need for user intervention. :D

Issues found:

1. The lack of gtk-3 meant that recent apps such as Chrome will not work.

2. The nouveau driver lacked hardware acceleration as did Easy Linux 0.5 pre-alpha, released Oct. 02, 2017 and requires
the items detailed in this post: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 820#969820

3. The "Show location" option when right clicking an item in the pFind search results does not function.

Thats it so far, just a couple of items to consider compiling & including. You seem to have cracked the ethernet problem. :D

Taking it for a spin...

#79 Post by gcav »

Hi Barry,
Thanks for this latest release. I am testing it, and will probably migrate to if from slaq64...

I miss Quirky's F2FS boot and the speediness of it. This is by far
the fastest distro I have tested. TBH ext4 does not work nicely on a flash drive. Will F2FS be avaliable on -esp- syslinux boot?

I have read several comments about how ppl think your are giving up on the .sfs and aufs idea. Although I like the use of .sfs anbd AUFS. and it has it uses; as a tinkerer and developer, I easily mess up the layered file system.
It would great if you kept Quirky full install always around alongside Easy...

Im a giving OE a full compile, I will probably have some questions later...

Thanks B.

dd'd to a usb stick running on a lenovo thinkpad x230 (4xi5, 8Gb ram)

first thoughts on the theme wasn't good but it grew on quickly, like it!

sadly running was 'sluggish', selecting a program took a couple of seconds to load, seemed ok when loaded, every selection took too long

will try from a cd in case my usb is the cause

:)

edit, as an aside, the hotkeys do not work, I discovered the following workaround adding to the kernel paramaeters: acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"

however, frequency scaling DID work, this required intel_pstate=disable when running xenialpup64
