Dpup stretch uses the legacy variant of retrovol, so there are no editable svg icons for customization of the speaker color. If the speaker icon does not show in your tray, is it still possible to click the blank area to access the retrovol options? If not, maybe JWM did not swallow the retrovol app?
The icon disappears for me when I drag the volume down to 0%. Surprisingly, this doesn't change the volume for me, as after I moved the slider to 0% I could still hear the 2barks, and then I checked my Master slider in Full Window and it was still at 75%.
Thanks Sailor Enceladus,

The next release will update retrovol to 0.14.1.

I installed to a 16gb SDHC card for use on my Lenovo ThinkCentre
desktop:

I interrupted the first boot to specify the nouveau graphics driver.
Added the usual applications with PPM.
The computer is connected to a 32" T.V. with an hdmi cable, the nouveau
driver allowed getting sound from the T.V. speakers in
kodi,smplayer,and vlc.

Will the kernel source + devx be available to download? I'd like to
install the proprietary nvidia driver and compare it with the nouveau driver.

Thanks.

I needed to change some settings in smplayer and vlc but it's working
well now.
The dual core lenovo is in another room, will make the change on that
one shortly.

Thanks for uploading the files.

EDIT: I made the change on the lenovo, needed to make changes to audio and video settings but it's working well now.

EDIT2: The proprietary nvidia driver is working well, screenshot shows a movie DVD playing from kodi, not much strain on the processor with 3 applications running at once.

Thanks again.

EDIT3: palemoon updated this morning.

New frugal install on USB Stick on Core i3-5005U Laptop. So far very nice, the new wallpaper and icon theme looks great. Thanks radky, great job.

I still have no working wifi access OOTB, having to copy the firmware for my intel 7265D wifif card. The new firmware included is still considerably out of date for a newer kernel and no suitable version is found. Looking at the /lib/firmware folder, it contains one version iwlwifi-7265D-10.ucode. I assume I will also have to do the same for other PC with Intel 7260 card, as there is also only an older version iwlwifi-7260-10.ucode.

Code: Select all

# dmesg|grep wifi

Hi Terry,

Thanks for testing!

The firmware package in this Dpup is larger than typically found in standard Puppy releases but, as true for most standard Pups, it is still a cut-down package to avoid growing the iso excessively. Of course, the disadvantage of cut-down firmware is incomplete support for recent hardware.

In the next release, I could include a comprehensive firmware package that should cover your iwlwifi hardware plus much more, but this would add significantly to the iso size. The additional firmware could be added directly to the zdrv.sfs or included in an optional fdrv.sfs.

I'm open to suggestions. :)

Edit: A comprehensive firmware package would add about 72M to the iso

Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
It's not really an issue, as it only requires inserting a file to get it working. There would be lots more to add in other than what is missing for my wifi card, to get the firmware directory more complete. Just stick with what you currently are using. Hopefully others who have issues with missing firmware, will be able to work out how to copy in their missing firmware as described here.

First 2 versions ran fine, this version no problems either. Performance is great with web video news sites, etc. Basically ethernet, wired to wrt54g running openwrt, client mode wireless.

This is running frugal in folder on debian 9x system. Installed by:
7z x stretch-7.0.0a2-k4.9.61-10Nov2017.iso to extract files.
Then added script to /etc/grub.d for grub 2 boot, update-grub.
I was a little rusty on those boot parameters, but I think the psubdir= did the trick.

I installed some applications with PPM.
Installed the proprietary nvidia driver.

I haven't done much testing yet but looking good so far.

Thanks.

Edit: Haven't had any problems after adding stuff and using for a few hours,PeasyGlue is cool :)

I did a frugal install on old IBM server with intel graphics chip
and it booted up without needing any fiddling.

Very nice.

One strange thing I noticed , when I install pho 32bit
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 223#974223

I could only create a captions file by typing in terminal

Code: Select all

pho -k *.jpg

I installed applications with PPM.

Had a problem when using the CPU Frequency Scaling Tool, it was set to
performance and couldn't be changed.
I added "intel_pstate=disable" to the kernel line of the menu.lst file
and that fixed it:
kernel /stretch-700a2-n10/vmlinuz intel_pstate=disable psubdir=stretch-700a2-n10 pmedia=usbflash pfix=fsck

Another problem with retrovol, I used the alsa sound wizard and chose
to use the speaker in one of the monitors, I can adust the sound level
in vlc, smplayer, and kodi but volume control in the tray won't budge.

Streaming video is very good.

Hi Radky,

I was using the previous stretch you'd put up week before last, and honestly found zero problems with it. I mean, for my purposes, I couldn't find one single thing I had to fix and/or correct. That is rare with pup releases, at least what I've come across. I think your DE skills shine through on your pup, as things are very polished, look gorgeous, and a person isn't dealing with what should be fixed headaches before releasing (links, .desktop files, icons missing from menu, etc, etc).

A few days ago, I downloaded stretch-7.0.0a2-k4.1.46-10Nov2017.iso, and have been running it----and I don't know how to say or give any other high praise except for this: it's sublime

Thank you very much.

I even finally decided to delete my montrousity of Dpup-Stretch-700a1 that I put together back in February/March with your Fbox 3.0 (or was it 4.0?) DE as default in it. Your creation here is soooo much nicer. And with Firefox 32 (I installed it in /opt FF 52.4.1) now supporting Netflix and making it braindead easy (like Chrome) to enjoy Netflix anywhere, it just put the icing on the cake.

This pup is a definite long-term keeper. :D

Thanks for the report don570. At the moment, I'm not familiar with your pho app but it looks promising.

Thank you belham2 for testing this alpha-3 release. Your kind comments are certainly appreciated.

In a few days this distro will move to beta status in a separate forum thread.

Thanks for the reminder Bill. It seems the kernel devs recommend using intel_pstate for recent intel chips, but there are reports this scaling driver does not function correctly in some scenarios. In problematic cases like yours, adding "intel_pstate=disable" to the kernel line of menu.lst will allow the selection of a different scaling driver.

Retrovol works well for most users, but there are reports of incompatibility with some Pup installs, or even crashing with segmentation faults. I don't have a mac (or Macmini) for testing, but maybe you could test the attached retrovol binary compiled in Dpup Stretch from the most recent sources of 01micko's fork of retrovol.

Edit: attachment removed

Thanks

Just remove the false gz extension.

Make a backup of your current retrovol binary, then place this testing version in /us/bin and restart X server.

Thanks
I renamed the retrovol.gz and changed the permissions, put it in
/usr/bin and rebooted, tried to configure retrovol but no change, I see
a flash but no message so retrovol may be segfaulting I guess.

I have changed from the monitor speaker to plugging external 2.1
speakers into the headphone jack on the Macmini and running the sound
wizard again.
Retrovol disappeared altogether from the tray but I have sound where I
should, palemoon, kodi, vlc, smplayer. The volume control for the speakers
is within reach and the sound is better than the monitor speaker so I'm
happy, enjoying Oldieradio Florida from kodi atm :)

Thanks.

I installed to a 32gb SDHC card, added gkrellm and inxi with PPM.
Have connected a monitor and wireless mouse + keyboard.
Palemoon runs but it's hard work for this pc, will give links a try.
Should be able to browse with links while listening to music with
Deadbeef or pmusic.
TAS makes the CPU spike when taking a screenshot.
