The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Manning was born in Mancoats, Manchester which is the centre of the English language as she is natively spoken.

If you look at the accompanying map you will see how central Mancoats is to the centre of the English speaking world. (especially if you largely ignore the Scottish and Irish - as everyone knows they cannot be linguistically understood at the best of times. Och aye the noo)

Leicester is the heart of England and the root of the English language not Manchester.

Not possible. My first wife was Leicestrian and I could not understand her.

To be fair - it may not have been a linguistic limitation.

First wives are markedly difficult to understand.

It is incredible how accents change so rapidly in the 20 miles between Leicester and Derby.

My father once told me when he was young that you could tell which side of the town someone came from by there accent.
My grandmother could speak the local Yorkshire dialect, my father could understand it, and I only have an accent.
I occasionally use words which may seem strange to non-Yorkshire folk but which are locally understood, e.g., "Starved wi cowd" though mostly that would be "Frozn daft"

My dear old mother (god rest her soul) was born in Rotherham (i think thats what she said) and always used to call me a "daft aypith" whatever that was :-)

Thats not me mum but here's a typical Sheffield street scene as I remember it from my last visit way back in the 90's...

Oh, no - there's a bit of blue sky ...might not be rotherham after all...

"Daft"=silly or stupid, but might be used for funny or humorous.
i.e. Behaving a little crazy so as to make people laugh.

At the risk of being obvious, it is often called "The Queen's English" ... and that is not because of it being spoken by sweetie boys.

Now it makes sense, always wondered, a hapeny or however it is spelt.

John Culshaw likened the Yorkshire accent to a "big floppy dough", and the Lancashire accent to a "curly cheese sandwich".
You can get it if you say those words.

Ha, makes sense now. I've always had a tenuous grip on reality. Life is so much better when you live it according to your own vision and the beat of your own drum.... :-)
isn't that the puppy way??

I imagine she said it lovingly to you as a child.
Like:
"Ooh, you do act the fool sometimes, but I LOVE it because it is so interesting and amusing."

Or was there a hint of disaproval?
Like:
"Sometimes you do take it too far."

This is a little more than just a picture, but it is fun to watch.
This is a link to some videos on YouTube about uncle drew. This is a professional basketball player who is made up to look like an old man.
He goes to some of the neighborhood basketball courts and plays a big spoof on the locals.
They think he is some crazy old man, until he really starts to play basketball.

Someplace, there is a video of him and three others, made up to look like very old people, and they play as a team, against some locals.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
