Linus Torvalds declares Intel fix for Meltdown/Spectre ‘COMPLETE AND UTTER GARBAGE’

The always outspoken Linus Torvalds, best known for his continuing work on the innermost code of Linux systems, has harsh words to say and accusations to level against Intel. His evaluation of Intel’s latest proposed fix for the Meltdown/Spectre issue: “the patches are COMPLETE AND UTTER GARBAGE.” As a potential line of inquiry, he suggests: “Has anybody talked to them and told them they are f*cking insane?” (Asterisk his.)

Seems accurate. I nominate Linus to be the new head of Intel. They can go back to in-order Atom and stop the "Wintel" crap inside all laptops. Actually I nominate Linus to be the head of Microsoft too. Under his new leadership they can ditch Windows 10 and go back to improving 7 or XP and make all their bugs open source so people can fix the mess (or just use Linux). Smile

Hi Sailor E.

Nobody knew you were such a sadist! Laughing You wrote:

Why inflict such torture on the man?! Laughing We Linuxians owe him so much.

If he were, I suspect that his first order of business would be to find a refusal site
big enough for it. (If he can't find any, the < split > command comes to mind. Nah.
How about plain old < wipe >.)

BFN.

Linus is right. Worse still, I've tried the patch on several puppies - can get the meltdown fix going, but no spectre fixes. Used i3-2310M & Cel 1019Y, with Slacko 64, Tahr64, Tahr32, Xenial64, Fatdog 721 & Antix17 with 4.9.77 kernel. Last one acknowledges retpoline, but can't use it (error - 'not compiled with retpoline aware compiler'). On all - microcode update not recognised. Has ANYONE managed to get an all-clear using spectre-meltdown-checker?
An old AMD E-450 relative's machine gets the all-clear unpatched. Obviously never susceptible.
