Donncha, I changed the title of this thread with the objective of making it more informative so that people who want to help can tell if it's something they might be able to help with, without having to read the whole post.

Feel free to change it yourself if you can think of a better way to put it. Keep in mind that the forum only allows a few characters in the Subject line. The number seems to vary, so you have to think carefully about what to put there. Also keep in mind the "curse of knowledge," which is when you know what you meant to say but nobody else can figure it out. Smile

We're born hard wired to talk, but we have to be taught to write. They're both communicating, but in completely different ways.

Bigpup thanks you are absolutely right. My Lucid does not see fans and sensors. I downloaded Xenial but couldnt find an ISO which is how i know to get an OS to flash (I did warn you I was a linux idiot) so I went back and got Tahr and this is a whole different story. Not only do I like it at first sight just as it came out of the can but my problem seems to be solved.
I still need time to tweek it up a little and at the moment i am engaged in dealing with heavy snow not playing with computers.
I thank you greatly and take the oportunity to congratulate you for reaching a a rubicon number of forum posts. Dont think rubicon is the right word but you know what I mean Laughing Laughing

Dear Flash i apologize for being so moronic. as a matter of principal i try to lurk before jumping into a forum but as I had been on PLDF 5 or 6 years ago I thought I knew it all. Very impressed the way BigPup zonked into my problen so quickly in view of the fact i didnt really know what my problem was!
I am vision impaired and tend to write in big read which my wife tells me most people will consider rude and on a par with shouting....
Having lived most of my life somewhat siouth of Arizona I would give my back teeth to be back there and not in the frozen wastland of Northern France
Best Rgds

PS I see my BIG RED font didnt come out in the preview pane Laughing Laughing Laughing

Test

Here is a trick you can try.

If you enlarge the browsers view when you type into the forum. The letters will look big.
However they will post at normal size. (size selected)

Usually hold ctrl key and press + or - to change browser screen view size.

I quick sign off on this thread to say problem solved with a special thank you to Matchpoint who was the first to post in answer to my plea for help. Matchpoint you got it right by suggesting Tahr and I ignored you as you were misled by the error in my post subject. So allow me to say a belated thanks for getting the right answer - almost for the wrong reason!
I have ended up as suggested also by Bigpup with Tahr (also with Xenial and need to flip a penny to make a decision) and am happy with the choice and have run them both on live flash drives enough to be confident I need look no further. During this process I have taken about 10 other distros out for a spin and have found I definitely didn’t like/didn’t understand most of them. I am more than happy with Puppy and its exceptionally friendly helpful community.
So thanks to everyone here and goodbye

I couldn't resist posting a pun on the title of this thread...

Donncha,

you cannot control fans of an old PC with Puppy. If you try, they get emotional
-- that is what fans do. Wink

(Aahh, Flash, you hid that tongue-in-cheek icon again, eh?) Laughing

BFN.
