The script /etc/init.d/aumix is strange in that the comments at lines 17 & 18 state that it does not work
with alsa but the body of the script seems to have disabled provision to do so.

As a temporary fix I placed the following simple script in /root/Startup to set a safe level of 55%

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
# This is /root/Startup/aumixvolfix
# Fix to give some sound volume at boot time - ETP 9th Feb 2018
aumix -v55
I found a simple fix: remove /etc/init.d/aumix entirely.

/etc/init.d/10alsa should take care of initial sound level setting, and reloading at bootup.

It still is needed.

The history is that it was provided by package 'jwmconfig2', that was in all pups.

Radky developed JWMDesk and PupControl (which contains JWMDesk), assuming the existence of /root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal.

Quirky 8.4 has PupControl, and it still assumes prior existence of jwmrc-personal, and uses it.

I did put jwmrc-personal into some of my jwm PETs, given that jwmconfig2 is no longer used.

However, the PET used for Quirky 8.4, jwm-976-april64.pet, does not have it (yeah, I have rolled back to an old jwm, temporarily hopefully).

I have fixed this by creating rootfs-skeleton/root/.jwm/jwmrc-personal in woofQ. This will get overridden if any PET has it.

ETP wrote:2. A possible issue for NVIDIA/nouveau users was the lack of Direct Rendering - i.e. hardware acceleration.
That was also evident in Chrome which I subsequently installed and was resolved using PKGget Package Manager
to install the MESA VDPAU acceleration drivers:
  • mesa-vdpau-drivers_17.2.4|Mesa VDPAU video acceleration drivers
libllvm5.0_5.0-3|Modular compiler and toolchain technologies runtime library
Aagh! I should have checked the deps.

Quirky 8.4 already has mesa-vdpau-drivers, however, has libllvm4.0.

As I have built from the Ubuntu 16.04.x "updates" repository, there is a change of dependency. mesa-vdpau-drivers now requires libllvm5.0

Thanks for reporting that, it is fixed, for upcoming 8.4.1.

Significant delay in drawing backgrounds and window content for numerous applications. (The windows themselves snap right open but are then blank for some time, Some apps open with window and background drawn but no content.
This does not apply to all apps. For instance Iron browser snaps right open and speeds across the information highway effortlessly.)
GUI freezes with any real hint of multitasking. This will occur most often when more than one window is created by an application during the completion of a specific task such as updating the package manager or setting up the network from first boot setup dialogue.
Processes often complete in the background after a period of time and the GUI unfreezes and everything appears normal.
Occasionally a hard reset is required when the GUI freezes.
Although the Iron browser will run very effeciently it will also freeze the GUI during similar circumstances such as download dialogue at mediafire opening and prompting the download location window from the browser while slinging a pop under ad into the mix
These issues occur predictably and frequently.
Oh dear, something is very wrong. For me, Quirky 8.4 is very fast.

BarryK:

I finally installed your latest version and I must say; you've outdone yourself!

A few items: The getflash GUI seems to take its time coming up when using the menu icon. Much faster from terminal.

Duplicate MP Console Editor under Menu --> Document

I noticed you left out MPlayer. I know it's just a matter of choice; I have it running via terminal and a YAD script from your old Xerus packages and from RU Xerus.

Is the new firewall setup (from Puppy) more secure than the prior script? I don't care for the interface as much (still personal choice, I guess).

Great to see the Dropbox package in the menu. MikeB did a great job on that one.

Temperature box: Nice touch.

No YAD so I added it in. Again, a matter of choice, I guess.

Installed Quirky using .img file for the first time. I didn't use easydd because I made a script a few months back called img2sd that has a YAD gui on top of dd. I specifically made if to burn img's to the Raspberry Pi but it worked with the usb stick as well.

I plan on giving this version a workout over the next week; so I should have some feedback as to items that may not be working properly.

Overall, seems to run quicker than the older Xerus x86-64 versions.

Thanks!

Did you reprogram the function keys? F12 used to take me to the Menu, which was quite useful in times when the mouse froze up on me.

Kind regards,

Not intentionally. It is because of a missing file, see this earlier post:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 792#982792

Should be releasing a 8.4.1 Service Pack tonight, to fix it.

Whatever you fix, PLEASE do not reassign the F12 key! I consider this a configuration mistake. JWM should have no business to assign straight function keys. These keys should be left to programs. Programs are unable to use them if the file manager highjacks these keys. Letting JWM take the F12 key will - just as an example - prevent the use of mtpaint's F12 shortcut. JWM already provides a keyboard shortcut for the main menu (Alt+F1), there is no reason to use a second key for this function.

Just checking, looking in jwmrc-personal...

Code: Select all

<Key mask="A" key="Tab">next</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F4">close</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F10">maximize</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F6">minimize</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="#">desktop#</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F1">root:3</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F2">window</Key>
...what does that mask="A" mean? The ALT key?

No F12 there, so I don't know why F12 should eba ny different from earlier Quirkies.

Quirky Xerus 8.4.1 is released:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... xerus-8.4/

If you are already running 8.4, when you run the Package Manager, it should automatically offer to install the 8.4 to 8.4.1 Service Pack.

Or, go to the menu "Filesystem -> Quirky Version Upgrade Manager"

...er, but that doesn't work. Hmmm.

Well, here they are:

slavvo67 misses the shortcut, you wrote that you didn't change anything intentionally, so i figured that it was included in Quirky at some point as it is included in all recent Puppies. May be in .jwmrc, in my Slacko it's in jwmrc-personal:

Code: Select all

<!-- Key bindings -->
<Key key="Up">up</Key>
<Key key="Down">down</Key>
<Key key="Right">right</Key>
<Key key="Left">left</Key>
<Key key="h">left</Key>
<Key key="j">down</Key>
<Key key="k">up</Key>
<Key key="l">right</Key>
<Key key="Return">select</Key>
<Key key="Escape">escape</Key>
<Key key="F12">root:3</Key>             <== Here !

<Key mask="A" key="Tab">next</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F4">close</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F10">maximize</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F6">minimize</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="#">desktop#</Key>
<Key mask="A" key="F1">root:3</Key>

Well, even if you don't add the F12; from the messages above I should be able to add it myself.

FYI, there was no alt with the F12 in previous versions; just F12.

Update: BarryK: Your jwmconfig2-20160402.pet does, in fact add the F12 feature back in.

Mochi, you make a good point and after looking at the jwmrx-personal and personal2 files, it explains why certain applications have certain keys that do not behave correctly. So this file does, in fact, override specific key setups that other applications try to use. - Thank you for that one, Mochi.

installed 8.4.1

#735 Post by foxpup »

I just installed Quirky Xerus 8.4.1. I did a fresh manual frugal install of 8.4 and installed the sevice pack pet for 8.4.1. I rebooted. Xorgwizard seemed to come up; it guessed everything right automatically for my new laptop.

For wifi it behaves like all other Quirky's and Easy's on this machine: no connection on startup with SNS, saved profile does not seem to work and frisbee does not find anything at all. I installed the .pet rerwin recently (20180209) offered on the Easy thread and that fixes everything.

Otherwise everything I tried seems to run fine.
I have the impression the CPU temperature keeps low, around 30°C, where I usually have around 36°.

Then I don't understand why you want this crappy F12 assignment back in. What's wrong with the existing Alt+F1? Who came up with the idea of an additional shortcut? Can't have been BK

If I knew Alt-F1 was another option to do the same thing; then I could care less about the F12. Either way, I'm sure you can program out the F12 key; just like I can re-add. Makes no diff to me.

If I can get to the menu without a mouse; I'm good. Probably a band-aid on the bigger problem of occasional mouse freeze, anyway. Found a script that resets the mouse; so at least in theory if I can get to the menu entry for the reset --- the mouse should be back in the house....
