Firefox-ESR latest |
|
Hi all,
Is anyone running Firefox64-ESR in any of their Slacko-based 64-bit builds?
Currently, I am running--in Micko's Slacko64-6.9.9.9--FirefoxESR-52.3.0 64-bit with no problems. But soon as I drop in the latest FirefoxESR 64-bit build of 52.4.1, which is the next build one removed after what I am running, Firefox will not run and/or start. Even trying it in terminal I see something about libgtk+3.so.0 error--what?, this is not showing in 52.3.0??
Did something major change between 52.3.0 to 52.4.1?? They both are based on FirefoxESR 52.
Anyone know??
[UPDATE] Well, my bad: maybe I've forgotten you can't just download FirefoxESR in its tar.gz format, extract it with UExtract, and then just drop into Slacko's existing /usr/bin/firefox folder the updated firefox version? Yes?? Maybe stuff has to come straight from Slacko itself, compiled by them. In PPM, it's showing the latest version offered by Slackware-14.2 repo is 52.3.0, which is what I have installed. Unfortunately 52.3 is two versions behind this latest 52.4.1 I'm trying to install. Is this correct on Slacko about not being able to drop in what you've extracted from a Firefox tar.gz download????

Yes belham, version compiled from Slackware repositories should work best (but I haven't tried it's 52.4.1 compilation yet).

Interesting, it looks like 52.4esr is compiled, but not 52.4.1 yet

Hi Sailor,
Thanks for the headsup on 52.4, I'll give it a go. I've no problem running a older versions of a browser, it just I was perplexed that I couldn't drop in a extracted tar.gz from firefox itself into Slacko and have it work...then I thought, uh oh, you big dummy, this is S-L-A-C-K-O, so you better ask here first if that's not generally a good idea

I've got FF45.9esr working in my Slacko5.7.
AdBlocker Ultimate: Added Malware and Easy List Chinese
Google Redirect Fixer
I did not go full-tilt on security privacy as too much was just breaking in 45.8 and 45.6 failed attempts. I did make sure auto complete, search-engines, TLS/SSL, and Telemetry got properly handled. Caches zeroed, phone-home url's blanked, etc.
This was put into "mini-eee" with FF27 out. Jeeeez, the iso went from 136 to 158 Mb, and is showing 455Mb, up from 405. Putting in the Office was smaller
Butt, its working smoothly... I realize slacko6.9.9 can handle most of 52.3esr, but apulse and gtk migration means I'm out, so posting as reference. FF45.9 goes directly in root OK.
Regards

I've downloaded:
mozilla-firefox-52.5.1esr-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
and
mozilla-firefox-52.5.3esr-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz
Both seem to install OK but neither one will run on my machine.
Any ideas?

I remember Slackware 14.1 (Slacko 6.3.2) rolled back to Firefox 45esr due to some freezing issues. It looks like they're staying on 45.9esr:

https://slackware.pkgs.org/14.1/slackware-patches-x86_64/mozilla-firefox-45.9.0esr-x86_64-1_slack14.1.txz.html
Under "alternatives" in the 2nd link there's 52.3esr in Salix and Slackel repo, not sure if these work in Slacko though.

OK. I can confirm mozilla-firefox-45.9.0esr-x86_64-1_slack14.1.txz works.
I guess I'll stay with this for the time being.

Yes, FF 45 is running on my Slacko 6.3 version. Lately, ebay is giving me popup notices that FF 45 isn't supported, but the site features still work for me in buying and selling. Across the sites I visit, there's been no freezing problem, which is the main reason I wouldn't want to upgrade to any higher version of FF.
Maybe when there is a Slacko pet of Brave, I would switch from FF 45.

G'day All,
I did a bit of looking about and found firefox 52.6.0esr-x86_64_1slack14.2.txz to work on both slacko64 6.9.9.9 and xenialpup64 7.5.

Tested with sound working in slacko 6.3.2 and slacko64 6.3.2, tahr 6.0.6 and tahr64 6.0.6. May work in more recent puppies. Apulse is builtin from OscarTalks' package 0.1.11 but it is in /usr/lib/apulse and it is used with a wrapper script so it does not interfere with other alsa apps. They makes themselves the default browser. They are in /usr/local so they do not interfere with other installed browsers and are installed along with them. (Install gtk+3 if missing before starting firefox).

firefox-52.7.0esr-en_US-x86_64.pet is working here.
I suspect lack of gtk+3 may have been the problem with my previous attempts to upgrade.

firefox-52.7.0esr-en_US-x86.pet is working on Puppy 6.3.0 32-bit with gtk+3
Upon installation it immediately upgraded to 52.7.2
EDIT: Also works on Slacko Puppy 5.7 no-PAE (32-bit)

If you want to turn off updates then make a file named user.js with geany with the following content:
Code: | // turn off application updates:
user_pref("app.update.enabled", false); |
and move it into the folder of your profile.

Thanks for the info.
From looking at the Mozilla ESR page, it looks like it may be safe to let it auto-update until August.
