Problems with ffmpeg..FFConvert in Xenialpup64

#1 Post by april »

I have never been able to get this to record sound on my desktop machine.

The sound seems to be there and I hear it while watching live but trying to record it along with the video does not happen with any combination of presets and formats I choose and i have tried many.

Is anybody experienced in this and can you give me a setting that should work please?

Here is the last try output which just didn't record anything.

Code: Select all

Should your libaac be 64-bit?

#2 Post by mikeslr »

Hi April,

I previously hadn't tried to record any sound under Xenialpup64. So wasn't aware of a problem. But just did a pfind for libfaac. The only libfaac libraries found were those in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu. There is a separate 64-bit package, see link from here: https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/libfaac0. I downloaded and unpacked it. Under Ubuntu, they would be installed to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. For whatever reason, 'Ubuntu-based' Puppies can't find the /x86_64-linux-gnu folder. So to use those libraries, it would have been necessary to move them. But I think they would have been moved to /usr/lib rather than /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu.

In short, you (we) may not have the required 64-bit libfaac libraries. See if installing them to /usr/lib solves the problem. And please let us know. Your post tells me you know a hell of a lot more about ffmpeg than I do. :)

It looks to me from the ffmpeg version info you post that the ffmpeg you are using does not include libfaac support.

Have you tried the AV recording program "wex", which is a bash/gtkdialog frontend to ffmpeg? wex includes the following code to automatically change the AAC codec depending on what is found compiled into the ffmpeg version on the system:

Code: Select all

AVCODECS="$($AVCONV -codecs 2>/dev/null)"
if [ "$(printf '%s' $AVCODECS | grep 'libfaac')" ];then
 export AACENC="libfaac"
elif [ "$(printf '%s' $AVCODECS | grep 'libvo_aacenc')" ];then
 export AACENC="libvo_aacenc"
else
 export AACENC="aac -strict experimental"
fi
wex can be installed from info/downloads at:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 870#918785

You only need to install the wex dotpet and the scrox dotpet (64bit versions or 32 bit versions appropriate to your system). weav isn't required at all - it is a separate program. A particularly useful undocumented feature of wex is that it automatically creates a temporary logfile of the exact ffmpeg commandline it used. You find that in /tmp/wex/ffmpeg.log whilst a recording is being made or before wex screen closed. Another pretty much undocumented feature of wex is that it has a plug-in facility that lets you can run any ffmpeg command you like from it (in fact any command...!) (not just the pre-loaded default commands) - I'll maybe write a howto on that later.

Note that wex is an audio recorder, or a video+audio recorder or a screencast+audio recorder: you just need to click the appropriate check boxes for what you want - there are three checkboxes: one for audio, one for X11video (screencast) and one for webcam (if you have one - definitely needs unchecked if no webcam on system).

So I suggest first installing wex to see if sound recording works, or if there is some reason you can't do that try libvo_aacenc instead of libfaac on your commandline, or failing that (since I can't see it in your ffmpeg version info either - though I may be a bit blind), try "aac -strict experimental". Wex has been tested as working in Xenialpup earlier.

FFmpeg / AAC Encoder

please check your ffmpeg installation for aac encoder.

Workaround

#5 Post by ozsouth »

Although I'm using Lxpupsc64 on a laptop, I found that FFConvert uses the internal mic to record, hence I have to raise internal mic volume.
With a pc lacking internal mic, I used a cable from headphone jack to mic jack. Crude, but it works.

Working through answers thanks .

Mikesir "Puppies can't find the /x86_64-linux-gnu folder." Xenialpup64 does not seem to have the folder at all and the "i386-linux-gnu. " folder is empty

The x86_64-linux-gnu references just seem to be links back to the root directory , not any directory of executeables? Its an empty link

Clearly no library to encode/decode exists so i got it from Github
https://github.com/mstorsjo/fdk-aac
Make sure you have the devx package installed
In the directory run "autogen.sh" ..right click choose run in terminal
Then run the normal
./configure make makeinstall
Message received ..Libraries have been installed in:
/usr/local/lib
I'll update when I check it out . Its an android library so I might have to find a linux source or executeable.

The Mysterious x86_64-linux-gnu folders

#8 Post by mikeslr »

Hi April,

FYI, I've attached a screenshot of the contents of the extracted Ubuntu Xenial Xerus 64-bit libfaac deb. It was extracted merely using UExtract on the deb then a couple layers deep within /mnt/home. Ignoring the left part of the window title within the screenshot [which shows the folder into which it was extracted], that right part of title reveals the folder into which two libraries and two symbolic links would have been written to be /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu --together with a x86_64-linux-gnu folder, itself, if one did not already exist-- had the deb merely been installed.

I've discussed the problem with such folder before: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 945#960945.

Frankly, anything I write about it, beyond that the problem exists and how I worked-around it, would just be guessing* on my part.

mikesLr

* As April noted, /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu in Xenialpup64 [and Tahrpup64] is a symbolic link to /lib. I'm guessing that installation of a deb which was written to use an actual /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu folder either does not follow the link [writing nothing to the system] or overwrites the link creating an actual folder which Puppy can't find. I don't know why it can't find such folder. Puppies can find /lib64 folders and should be able to find any folder however named.

You need to add the library for the required function that is missing, in this case aac encoding. Can be from packages or source. Best to use --prefix=/usr if built from source.
Make sure the headers and other dev components have been installed as well.

Then you need to recompile ffmpeg. Make sure to add the configuration option to enable the library you have just installed. Look through your system and all other available options in order to build exactly the list of supported functions that you want. Use a similar branch version of the ffmpeg source so you don't introduce incompatibilities with other packages (2.8.x).

As I already said, and being repeated by others now

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 377#989377

your ffmpeg version list does not list libfaac as compiled in to your current ffmpeg version - putting a libfaac library on your system will in itself make no difference because, yes, you would need to recompile your version of ffmpeg with dev versions of required libraries.

What I suggested is that you try a program that should work or at least identify the issue - I suggested wex is good for that at least.

Like I said (see my previous post), an alternative (without needing to recompile ffmeg) would be to try, instead of libfaac on your commandline, audio library codec":

Code: Select all

aac -strict experimental

or you can use

aac -strict -2

which is just a numeric way of selecting the same ffmpeg-inbuilt experimental aac codec
of perhaps, audio codec:

Code: Select all

libvo_aacenc
I also gave you the command to check which codecs are available to your ffmpeg (without needing to scan ffmpeg version info). I will repeat that since it probably wasn't clear on my previous post:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -codecs
For example, to see if libvo_aacenc is available you could enter:

EDIT: You need the 2>/dev/null below to get rid of the other stuff that is being output by stderr stream:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -codecs 2>/dev/null | grep 'libvo_aacenc'
If not, I suggest the usually ffmpeg built-in "aac -strict experimental" will work for your ffmpeg, but unless you try it, I have no idea if what I write is of any use to you.

i.e. In your program use:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0,0 -f x11grab -s 1228x964 -i :0+46,30 -t 60 -y -f mp4 -vcodec libx264 -threads 0 -b:v 1250k -aspect 4:3 -r 29.97 -flags +loop -cmp chroma -maxrate 1500k -bufsize 4M -bt 256k -refs 1 -bf 3 -coder 1 -me_method umh -me_range 16 -subq 7 -partitions +parti4x4+parti8x8+partp8x8+partb8x8 -g 250 -keyint_min 25 -level 30 -qmin 10 -qmax 51 -qcomp 0.6 -trellis 2 -sc_threshold 40 -i_qfactor 0.71 -acodec aac -strict experimental -ab 112k -ar 48000 -ac 2 "/mnt/home/TempSave/Movie/testtwo/x11grab.mp4"
EDIT2: By the way, XenialDog64 (which is the system I mainly use) also uses that ffmpeg from ubuntu. I use wex on that. I've just checked with above ffmpeg -codecs grep and I also do not have libfaac or libvo_aacenc on my system. wex however works fine recording audio (and video) - it is using aac -strict experimental as suggested in my earlier post to you. Note that the reason aac couldn't be seen as an encoder in your first post is that it is internal to ffmpeg and not one of the external libs.

From its /tmp/wex/ffmpeg.log, wex uses, for example, an alternative command like this (using 'presets, which themselves control quality, trellis etc' such as 'superfast' and so on):

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -y -thread_queue_size 512 -f alsa -ac 2 -ar 44100 -i plughw:0,0 -thread_queue_size 64 -f x11grab -show_region 1 -draw_mouse 1 -r 30 -s 1024x768 -i :0.0+0,0 -filter_complex asyncts -c:v libx264 -preset superfast -crf 23 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -strict experimental -ac 2 -ar 44100 -b:a 192k -threads 0 /root/try.mp4
As I said, it is also possible to use your command from inside wex (and hence have the GUI play, stop, file load/save dialogs etc if you wish). That is without modifying wex code itself (it has a plug-in system for exactly that user commandline purpose). I'll explain that in a simple howto sometime, if you are interested. But the commandline works fine by itself.

OK wiac . As I said I'm working through it . I have not gotten to your suggestion yet as installing extra stuff that may or may not work is a last resort.

I'm looking at putting in libfdk-aac-dev and libmp3lame-dev which are available on the PPM.

I take oscars point that a recompiling of ffmpeg will be necessary to use libfdk-aac.

Installed both dev files above and aac still no go but I am getting a response from lame.

Looks like the old problems resurfacing with some codecs just not able to be put out in the latest compilations of ffmpeg due to licence and copyright bullshit.

April, aac encoder is there in the long list you reported. So it is already in your ffmpeg so 'aac -strict experimental' command line I suggested should be working or there is something else wrong with your audio recording setup
That is, the problem is not ffmpeg IMO so recompiling it won't help, maybe you have an alda or audio hardware related issue. Maybe not hw 0,0 on your system?

Code: Select all

aac -strict experimental
or you can use
aac -strict -2
which is just a numeric way of selecting the same ffmpeg-inbuilt experimental aac codec
Native FFmpeg AAC Encoder
The native FFmpeg AAC encoder. This is currently the second highest-quality AAC encoder available in FFmpeg and does not require an external library like the other AAC encoders described here. This is the default AAC encoder.

Note: -strict experimental (or -strict -2) was previously required for this encoder, but it is no longer experimental and these options are unnecessary since 5 December 2015.

Probably the best result is from ozsouth 's post
Turning up the internal mike made a noticeable difference

Reading is fine, but if you actually tried it with the ffmpeg from Ubuntu Xenial you would find out that you get an error message telling you that the codec is experimental and you still need aac -strict experimental or aac -strict -2. Which should warn us that googling does not always provide a reliable answer ;-) Turning up the internal mic has nothing to do with ffmpeg of course.

hi @wiak

thanks for your interest ;-)
I did the tests under Slacko 700RC3 and have to say the statement above is correct ( -strict experimental and -strict -2 are obsolete )
but the date seems to be not believable. It's only valid for the newest ffmpeg versions.
The result depends on many factors indeed. The only way to find out is to test.

If you are interested in, here are the results you asked for:

ffmpeg 2.8.11

ffmpeg -i input.flac -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.m4a
doesn't work and leads to a warning acc experimental and hint to use option -strict experimental or -strict -2

ffmpeg -i input.flac -c:a aac -strict -2 -b:a 160k output.m4a
is working (flac(native)->(aac)native)

ffmpeg -i input.flac -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 160k output.m4a
is working OOTB (flac(native)->(acc)libfdk_aac)

ffmpeg 3.0.11

ffmpeg -i input.flac -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.m4a
is working OOTB (flac(native)->(aac)native)

ffmpeg -i input.flac -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 160k output.m4a
doesn't work and leads to error message ( unknown encoder libfdk_aac )

@april
happy testing :-)

greetings
