Wireless usb that works with puppy?

#1 Post by haywirepc »

I got xenialpup 64 going on my desktop. Everything works great. Tried on my laptop, a toshiba satellite but it doesn't see the wireless built in to the laptop.

Can anyone give me a link to a wireless usb you are sure works with xenialpup 64? I'd rather just buy a usb wireless and it work than aggravate myself trying to fix the laptops built in...

I bought a small wifi dongle from aliexpress.com (china) for around 2$. (It took a month to get delivered at my place with free postal shipping option).
It just simply worked with Fatdog64.
It was a generic device with no brand name.
I gave it to a friend after few months though so can't check it's details now in PC.
Get something from local store. Better take laptop with you and check before buying. (Some owner's won't let you check before buying, but some friendly ones will)

How old/recent is your laptop? Have you tried other pups (or maybe Fatdog) with it?

What is the output of the following commands:

lsusb

and also:

lspci

It is probably impossible to suggest a wifi interface that is guaranteed to work unless we know what the laptop hardware is. (Especially if there is a potential conflict with the current wifi hardware or module).

If you don't want to do any troubleshooting I would probably say just get a "TPLink" usb style plug in wifi adapter.

Are you sure the internal WIFI is turned on?
A lot of laptops have a switch or keyboard key that turns wifi off/on.
On first boot up of a Puppy version.
Puppy will not turn wifi on automatically if it has this feature.
Press and hold down the "Fn" function key on the computer's keyboard to display the laptop's hotkey card icons on the screen. 2. Click the "Wireless" icon on the screen or press the corresponding hotkey button on the keyboard, typically the "F8" key on a Toshiba laptop.
Try pressing F8.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

@haywirepc:-

You could give this one a try if you specifically want a USB wireless adapter. AFAIK, this works in every Puppy I've ever tried it in.....and if your kernel should, by a freak of nature, not support the dongle, rcrsn51 does drivers for this one (the old trusty rtl8192cu):-

http://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/ ... 3100M.aspx

It's a wee bit more expensive than a lot of the 'generic' Far Eastern 'specials', but you get what you pay for.....and this one runs cool; it doesn't get hot like some do. Wireless 'N', and 150 MBps throughput.....which you're never likely to approach. Good range, and a rock-solid connection.

It has Mike's 'seal of approval'!

Right here >> 02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)

This gives the exact [product:vendor]:

Code: Select all

lspci -nn | grep Network

My advice: Check how the owner of a Dell laptop dealt with this problem.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=112922

The first step was to run "dmesg" in a terminal

Code: Select all

dmesg | more
Perhaps the driver is recognized and the 'RADIO' is turned off .
'rfkill' app will turn it on.

Hmm, s-kami's repo doesn't have it.

As I highly doubt 64 has the broadcom-wl driver, you'd have to grab the necessary pkgs and compile it yourself.

Don't forget to check your inbox.

rfkill only shows the bluetooth. No wifi.

tried f8 to toggle on/off a bunch of times, no change. It was always on in windows, never had to toggle.

I have a Puppy distro which wouldn't work with the Broadcom internal card or an Intel that I bought, My friend gave me an Atheros, which I'm still using, which did work with that Puppy.
Maybe that was not a good way to solve it; but it worked.
I don't use the LibrePup any more, but it did work.
And the Atheros works with other Puppys.

Is [14e4:4365] the output from here?

Yes? Then unless I'm mistaken, you'll need the package @ the top of this below list:

Linux STA 64-bit driver or hybrid-v35_64-nodebug-pcoem-6_30_223_271.tar.gz dwnld pkg.

If you pass on a new adapter, your card requires a compiled driver.

I find it handy to have a spare Netgear WNCE2001 laying around while sorting out wireless issues.

Ohh, I know a wireless usb that will work with puppy......

Your smartphone.

Plug in your wifi connected smartphone to PC using usb cable.
Select USB tethering ON in settings of phone.
Run "ip link" command in terminal it should give you interface name like usb? or enp?s??u?. (in place of ? mark there will be some numbers). On my system it's usb0.

Be sure to run "ip link" command after selecting usb tethering on phone, or it will not show the interface name.

Then run command "dhcpcd usb0" (replace the interface name you got).

Done. That should do it.
You got to have smartphone though.

I was so hoping it would work, but alas dhcpcd sbd1 gives the following error "sbd1: interface not found or invalid".

I am pretty sure that is the correct interface. I even tried 0, 1, 2 etc. Help, please.

Using xenialpup 7.5 64 bit on dell n6430s trying to hotspot iphone 6s.

@haywirepc - You have a difficult wireless chip needing a specialised wl driver - quote from my other forum posts:

Alternate wl module for Xenialpup64 7.5 k 4.9.58 made. Confirmed working.
Need to skiplist b43, bcma, brcmsmac, ssb (edit /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG at about line 24.
Then copy wl.ko to /lib/modules/4.9.58/kernel/drivers/net/wireless. Then run depmod in terminal. Then reboot.

#20 Post by fishmanluvslinux »

I was reading today about the wifi issue that I was having with XenialPup 7.5 on my Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 Laptop. I downloaded xenialpup 7.0.6 and installed it instead and my issue is solved. I really do appreciate all of the hard work that this community puts in to helping guys like me.
Here are the specs for the laptop:

Cpu: Intel Pentium 4-M @ 1.80 Ghz
RAM: SDram DDR 1 Gb 266 Mhz/PC2100
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go - 16 MB
Display:1600 x 1200 (UXGA) 24-Bit
HDD: Travel Star 60 Gb @ 7200 Rpms

That is all that I have for it. Again thank you all for your help and kindness.
