Maru project is supporting lineage OS

#1 Post by don570 »

Barry K has been using Lineage OS on his cel phone.
http://bkhome.org/news/201803/testing-l ... xus-5.html

Maru OS can now run on Lineage OS . Preetam (the developer) supports this.
Hello Maru enthusiasts!

If you have been keeping up with our dev forums and ports you will notice that a lot of our ports for non-Google/AOSP devices are using LineageOS builds as the base to leverage all the great device support work done by the Lineage community. This was all because of Georgian's work in getting Maru working on LineageOS with his LG and HTC builds so I want to say a big THANK YOU to him for pushing the project forward.

Given that we have so many non-Google ports going on now, I think it's about time that Maru OS has an official branch based on LineageOS that all of these ports can use. This will save a lot of time for our porters as they will not have to worry about the details of integrating Maru's core code into their Lineage build--they can just focus on the device-specific stuff. This should give our porting velocity quite a boost.

Another advantage of supporting an official LineageOS-based manifest is that we will be able to bring our legacy devices to newer Android versions as well. (Let's be honest, Android 6 is super old now!!)

So I've gone ahead and started the process. And what better way to start than getting a prototype of Maru on LineageOS 14.1 / Android 7 running on our trusty old Nexus 5? See attached screenshot for the proof! Maru Desktop is running fine and everything. There are some polish details that I'll need to iron out before actually doing an official release but we are well on the way to making this happen.

Stay tuned as I will keep updating this thread as I begin to upload these branches to our GitHub so all our ports can switch over to LineageOS.

P.S. Honestly, I've wanted to start doing this for a while but haven't had the time since my transition to working part-time on Maru (see my blog post for details if you haven't already). But, I've made it a resolution to get more work done on Maru this year and I think we are going to have some pretty cool updates this year!

Hi don570.

Some light would be appreciated!Image

Difference between MARU, MARV, MARW, MARX, MARY and MARZ?
Marx was a political philosopher, Mary is a saint in the Catholic religion,
while Marz is a planet. ;) The other three I do not know.

I am of a proud lineage myself. We all are, aren't we? However, am I an
OS? :lol:

Please explain further. Please tell us how we can make head from tail in
this subject?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I read about that yesterday, good news!

I was starting to think that the Maru project had died, but it has just slowed, as the chief developer had to get a job, so he can only work on Maru part-time, but it is continuing.

Sorry to don570 for having been such a grouch yesterday.

Now from an objective point of view, to keep working in my trade, I
need a full keyboard. Not a virtual keyboard, not half a keyboard, a full
keyboard.

And I'm sure I am not the only professional with a need for a traditional
computer with a full keyboard.

A secondary aspect is that, twenty years ago, when people muttered to
themselves on the street, you called the cops or the paramedics, and
they locked up those people in looney bins (aka asylums, aka mental
hospitals). Now people are talking to themselves on the street all the
time, and no one is doing anything about it!!!

As to this MARU -- and I quote from the page provided by jrb:

"Your phone is your PC." -- Nope. Can't be.

Now for some dissection, if I may:
"Maru packs a complete desktop experience on your smartphone."
Yeah, sure. Can you see the icons? How do you choose in the menu?
And while we're at it, how precise is this menu? You need a stylus,
yes? To pinpoint and launch your word processor? Once your word
processor is running, how do your write in it? Oh, you dictate to it.
Well that is not a word processor any more, is it?

Second sentence:
"Your phone runs independently of your desktop so you can take a call
and work on your big screen at the same time."

Oh? I can do that already. Nothing new here. I can even do that with
an old land-line phone !!! :lol:

Third sentence:
"Personal computing couldn't be simpler."
I'll hold on to any comment on this one for now.

~~~~~~~~~~~
"When you're on the go, Maru is your phone."
Ditto: Oh? I can do that already. Nothing new here.
"When you're at your desk, Maru is your desktop."
Nope, can't be. You either have a desktop OS or a phone OS.
Given that most serious people doing serious work need a full keyboard.
Further, human perception is such that you need a minimum of space to
visualize your thoughts - whether they be math-based or word-based,
whatever your main mode of thinking is. Even more so if you think
geometrically, with shapes, like an architect or a graphic artist, or a
geographer or a land-surveyor. The small screen on a smartphone is
not enough.
Of course, everything is possible in theory: anybody can take the Puppy
or whatever desktop and make an accordeon out of it, that can be
stretched or shrunk. But will its size relate to human perception, to how
people normally see and do things? I doubt that very much.
BTW, what's wrong with having a phone OS with typical phone apps and
a desktop OS with typical desktop apps?
Coming back to the sentence I held on to earlier ("Personal computing
couldn't be simpler."), I'll say that on the contrary, this MARU
experiment is an exercise in complication.
BECAUSE IT DOES NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT MAN'S NATURAL WAY OF
DOING THINGS, MAN'S NATURAL PERCEPTION.
MARU is not needed. The man's (obvious) talent could be better used on
something else.
My 2¢. BFN.
@musher0,
There is no difficulty with using a full keyboard and a mouse with your phone.
I have done it plenty of times, using bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Though, as phone-docks become popular, you will be able to plug in usb mouse/keyboard.
Phones with 1TB strorage are on the way, Lenovo claim 4TB is coming.
Samsung is working on something like Maru, and a dock for connecting your monitor, mouse and keyboard.
Oh, and Maru is Android on the phone, Debian on the external monitor. So you are using Linux and Linux apps on the monitor.
Hi Barry.
Fine. But what about visualization of your ideas on a proper screen?
I don't see myself translating a 3,000 (typically 10 pages) word
document or more on a 2 in x 2 in screen.
That's not considering the add'l space you need for terminology and
dictionary search through your browser.
How do you put all these resources (or equivalent)
Image
on a phone screen, tell me?
Or maybe one will need 3 or 4 smartphones, one per task? And wow, we
are back to a set-up from 30 years ago, with an early word processor on
your electronic typewriter, an old cell phone and a "Franklin" PDA
doubling as a dictionary... Why is history repeating itself? :lol:
I don't see an advantage to amalgamating the two types of OS. We have
something convenient and useful in the form of the "desktop computer".
Are we changing set-ups just for the fun of it? (And the person initiating
that change, of course, will pocket a few million $... [hehe])
@musher0,
Maru is plain vanilla Android on the phone, proper Debian on the monitor.
The monitor is a normal desktop monitor, big screen, you use just as you would a desktop system.
You do not run Debian on the phone screen, as you say, too small.
Maru auto-detects when a external monitor is attached, and automatically provides Debian for it.
The Debian part of Maru is completely separate from the Android part, though they are working on some interaction.
Wow, how very clever. How is the monitor to be connected to the phone?
It would be fantastic, from my point of view, if it could be chromecast!
Aah and just yesterday I had to get rid of my 4 year-old OnePlus One which was running Lineage OS.
Will see when I get a new phone.
HTC 10 now works with Maru OS
Galaxy S9 should soon run Maru OS
I will upload on github the modified device tree and kernel source I used ro build images for HTC 10 . So maybe this become a official device too .
Since Linux on galaxy seams to never release soon my focus is to try the maru os patches for LineageOS 15.1 ,because this is working great on S9 .
I hope there is not hard to patch Lineage 15.1 , it will be great to see S9 running MaruOs
Thanks!
Samsung is charging over $200 CAN for its dock.
I hope that Maru Os can get around this albatross.
Now it starts just when hdmi attached .
It looks like they use a patch that allows the dock to be ditched.
I noticed that the team doesn't have a samsung S9 to test.
They need volunteers.
I do not have a s9 just the plus one , but they share same kernel and if s9+ works s9 must too , and maybe we get a user with a s9 to test the build
Update... Everything looking good. Note that HDMI not needed.
Just an update on progress:
On cm-14.1 (Android N) N5 works great and Georgian has confirmed HTC10 works as well. There are some really small polish issues left (e.g. there is still LineageOS update option under Settings that needs to be removed, etc.) but the system works and appears stable in my testing. Next steps are to get automated builds running and release official images for everyone to use.
Georgian has also done some work to support lineage-15.1 (Android 8 ) and I am getting an official manifest for us set up so we can build for newer devices like the S9. 15.1 is still under active development so we will try to use cm-14.1 for our official releases for now until everything is well settled on 15.1 or the hardware is new enough that it requires Android 8 as a minimum. There is one big issue for us left to fix which is moving the Maru Desktop dashboard under Settings to the new Android 8 settings architecture. I am working on this atm.
Both 14.1 and 15.1 support the virtual / wireless display patches and we are testing these as well which will enable Maru on all devices regardless of hardware HDMI out capabilities.
