Looking for Shockwave Flash tool for linux.

#1 Post by Jesse »

There are plenty of these sorts of tool for that m$ operating system, but would require me to do a reboot, and thats not quite so efficient...
I've had a good look, but can't spot any myself, has anyone else found something like that for linux? Hopefully one that works on Puppy Linux too :)

SVG tools do not seem to be very developed.

For a simple presentation (created in Open Office) you can save in .swf (flash / shock wave format) I have done this and it works well.

Shockwave (used rarely) and Flash (used frequently) are two different things. There are linux drivers for Flash, but not for Shockwave. Although flash has a "swf" extension, and it was once called "shockwave flash", those confusing facts are simply leftovers from 8 years ago when Macromedia was proposing making them a single package - which they never did. It was a dumb idea, probably orchestrated by marketing types who were clueless about the technologies involved.

As Lobster noted, there are no linux development tools for creating either shockwave or flash applications, other than exporting from OpenOffice - and I'm assuming that simply produces an SVG image using the .swf format - not very useful.

Incidentally, there is a free linux standalone flash player available from Macromedia. Flash produces amazingly platform independent content - OS wise and CPU architecture wise, and the scripting language combined with XML socket layers and video and database functions make it extremely powerful. Too bad you have to use windows to do all the development.
