Save error lost my Notecase Wiki (concluded)

#1 Post by icosahedron »

Hi guys, I'm using the wiki software Notecase 1.9.8 that was bundled in my Lucid Puppy.

I saved it to a flash drive, but I had a save error, and when I re-opened, most of my wiki has gone. There are just a few words left.

Is there any way that a computer-incompetent like me can recover the data, or is it lost forever?

did you close the program with a save and the program attempted to save but an error occurred and the program closed? If this is the case the data might be lost.
Upon reopening the data file, some of it loads?

Morning, Rockedge, thanks for your reply.

I'd previously saved the file, then minimized it while I did something else.

But then I was in a hurry to go out. I hadn't noticed that the file was open but minimized and I unmounted the flash drive with the file still open.

I should have re-mounted, saved, closed and then unmounted, but I was late, wasn't thinking straight, and just closed the file while the drive was unmounted. I thought that since I'd already saved it, it would be OK.

It wasn't.

When I next opened it, last night, the 'top' two or three pages loaded, but the rest of the tree is missing.

And, no, I haven't been as diligent with backups as I should have been. :(

If your usb is sdb1, what you saved after unmounting could be in sdb.

Any chance you had any of the autosave setup in the Notecase configuration?

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Hi Bigpup,

Fraid not. I didn't even know that setup was available. Mine looks exactly like your image there.

Might help next time, though, thanks.

I tried it myself and I was wrong: if you've unmounted the usb sdb and save something to it (sdb1), you can still access it: open rox and go to /mnt/sdb1/ while the usb is still unmounted and it is there! :)
Problem: after reboot it has gone anyway! :(

I remembered there was something like that, but not in detail. Sorry.

Thanks everyone.
Your replies seemed to imply that my file is dead, so I built up again from my last backup.

A lot of work, but I'll be more careful next time (probably).

Not exactly 'solved', but concluded.
