Continued cupsd resourse issues in 420 RC3

#101 Post by dogone »

Sorry to share that cupsd is still demanding 100% of the CPU (per htop) as soon as the user name/password dialog appears during "add printer". The good news is that cups detects and configures my network Brother Laser perfectly. The bad news is that cupsd does not release the CPU until it's killed. This is more than a nuisance. It could be dangerous on laptops.
This niggler really has to be confirmed and squashed before Final.

I should mention also that.... RC3 is fabulous?

I think both files you refer to shows up in the editor????? Else, this is the next enhancement of pwidgets. The Pwidgets team works to let user write those config files from gui, instead of manually editing.

I will tackle the weather problem by constructing a simple gui :)

Sorry for calling again

#104 Post by nancy reagan »

Sorry for calling again, but when I 1-click my pet for playing a rubber of bridge or the pet Skype, no reaction whatsoever ?

Probably the fault lies with me as you might have tested this already long before ?

In 4.1.2 these pets always worked, just like the firewire external drive ?

(I cannot 'SAVE TO CD" whilst using a multisession CD-R in 4.1.2.)

Now that I am passing by maybe someone could give me advise on this issue savng to cd (on 4.1.2 retro) ?

(I do not venture to frugal install because of fear for messing up with Grub.)

I've updated Puppy Control Panel
Removed help buttons
Replaced BrowserConfig Ptray, Pwidgets and Gwhere with RemasterX, PuppyInstaller, PSIP and partview
(had to remove ptray and pwidgets due to spawning extra processes)
Simplified some of the wording
Enlarged buttons to frame size
... the screenshot is over 50x bigger than the program itself now

no pet yet... pending any last minute changes

A couple of difficulties with Claws Mail:

(1) When you first set up an account with Claws and then click Configuration --> Preferences, Claws crashes. When it first happened, I thought it might be just a fluke, but it isn't; it seems to happen every first time with each new release. (I don't recall that this happened with Sylpheed.) However, when you reopen Claws, Configuration --> Preferences proceeds to work properly from then on!

(2) Under Configuration --> Preferences for current account (different menu item), in the "Receive" section, "Remove messages on server when received" is checked, but the default is to remove them only after 7 days have elapsed! I'm pretty sure most users, like me, would want them removed at once. I've actually been getting messages from days ago that I appear to have already received in the past. I just manually reset the "7" to "0," but I hope this should be easy to fix in a configuration file that comes with the package, so not everyone has to find out about this the hard way and then discover the solution.

Only after I unplugged the other usb's and a full reboot it was recognised.

Nope, it's a new bug. See page 1 of this thread for the explanation and the fix. (I've tried it, it works--basically, the fix is just reverting to the previous version of PETget that didn't have the bug.) If you've never installed a .PET without PETget (which you have to do with this fix), scroll down on the page to see how I did it, and feel free to ask questions if there's anything that isn't obvious.

Things are looking good. I don't think I use my computer as heavily as most of you, but everything that I tend to use on a routine basis seems to be working with one exception. The spell check on Abiword worked out of the box in RC2, but in RC3 it's not working for me. Can anyone confirm that it works for them?

Just had my first look at Deep Thought.
Did a manual frugal install to a USB stick, running on a Dell Latitude 610 laptop. (1.73GHz 512mb ram)
Looks very nice and should impress many. On first boot, Pwidgets took quite a while to show up, but not a problem after creating a savefile and rebooting.
Problems:
Tried changing the locale (to en_gb) and the screen turned black and froze.
Edited .xinitrc to get rid of the panels, restarted x, and... the screen turned black and froze.

Another thing I noticed: to use ndiwrapper, I copy the MS drivers to a folder on the USB drive (ie not in a savefile). I usually do this before the first save, and find the files in /mnt/sdb1 (after a save it is /mnt/home). However I could not find the USB drive under mnt, so had to create a save file first and reboot. Not a biggy, but seemed a little odd.

Ok finally 4.2 RC3 is installed on my main pc :) 3 things I've noticed

- WhoDo did say last release or the one before that, Freememory applet was to be re-installed, so where is it?? Due to not everybody will have Pwidgets running and if its turned off, your in the dark, plus if you have a memory leak, your in the dark, plus if you don't check your desktop every hr or so, when your compiling, your in the dark, Will somebody please put the light back on, I can't see, LOL

- Next we do have 24x24 icons which replaced the older 16x16, but why is JWM sub menu still 16x16? it looks stupid to have 24x24 for the main menu and the submenu 16x16, someone is asleep at the wheel again  Back in my JWM days there was a simple file that specified the maximum icon size. Thats what needs to changed. I'm sure one of you JWM aces knows which file I'm talking about. If not I'll download JWM from the repo and look at.

I love the new look, very nice WhoDo, hats off to you. :) Just one small thing, The default folder icon, its too distractive, its hard to focus on what your reading. anyway of maybe finding a new default folder icon, pretty please :) its just too bright, and too big, and too 3d, lol
other than that 10/10 for the theme upgrade.

As for abiword dictionary, I'll find a fix, I think a system link wasn't copied over durring the build, I'll check in a bit, I'm working on claws right now, I just don't really want to bloat it up with iconv because its a large library, the full library package is over 1mb compressed, I'll work something out :)

I am not going blind because I want to help the cause ,lol

Hey WhoDo

Here's the abiword and Claws mail dictionary fix, maybe just add it to the Abiword pet :) What happened was when I stripped the .so file, it got messed up  So this fixes it :)
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/ttuuxxx/ ... abifix.pet

Here's the updated Claws Mail with ssl and doesn't need anything else to get it going. Well not when I tried it anyways :)
http://www.puppylinux.asia/tpp/ttuuxxx/ ... 0-i386.pet

I think thats all I had to do :)
have fun

Have you tried the patch from up above and enabled spell check via the preferences?
I checked it on a clean system first and worked fine.

Just tried the abifix.pet

This has fixed spellchecking in Abiword and Claws.

As mentioned earlier by pa_ncclamrock, Claws-Mail seems to be unstable on first installation. Then it seems OK. This program has always behaved like that as far as I remember. Sylpheed has always seemed more stable but has less features/plugins

ttuuxxx have you ever thought about making a combo pet out of both Firefox and Thunderbird? You could try the same approach that you used with Firepup. Stick both Firefox and Thunderbird in the same pet and then get rid of the fat. This might provide an alternative to the Seamonkey suite and could even be smaller. Call it Thunderfox, Thunderfire Firethunder or whatever!

Here is a screenshot of my RC3 desktop with a sort of sheet metal blue background. I like the combination of orange and blue.

ttuuxxx,

If you edit /usr/share/geany/filetypes.sh line 8, to String 0xff901e the yellow will change to an ochre darker colour.

My eyes strained over this also. All the file types colours are in files there.

Not sure if this is a bug, but everytime I 'remove item' on trash and lock icons, then closedown. They reappear on reboot.
