Back to the problematic dual-core with the Nvidia 8400GS...../var/log/xorg.0.log posted from 310.
Actually got 311 installed..... with Vesa had 1600x1200 resolution but couldn't make a savefile. Rebooted, installed the Nvidia 275.09.07-k2.6.37.6 pet, got the desired 1440x900 display and the machine froze up with a solid bright red display.Puppy don't like this computer.

G'day mikeslr,
You are not quite alone.
Your computer's erratic graphics responses remind me of odd behaviour I've had with this new desktop set-up and some new Pups.
I have a Gigabyte ATI HD5450 card and a 1600x900 LED monitor (branded "HPx20LED"). Your reported error message about the monitor not being a directory I have seen here with some Pups.
I also had a consistent problem with Lucid-based Pups which defaulted to the radeon driver with a Live CD but would black-screen (no dvi signal) if I tried to drop to the prompt or reboot (the computer was still running - sometimes typing 'xwin' would recover the graphics).
My fix for the radeon-Lucid failure is to get the new Lucid Pup running live, then install the proprietary ATI driver (a lucid pet) and re-start X (I don't need to 'reboot' to get the driver to take over). Now the ATI driver is reported as being the working driver, not the generic 'radeon'. This, so far, has stopped black-screening with Lucid Pups so I can run the Universal Installer for both Frugal & Full Lucid Pups and create Save files and go back and forth to the command prompt as expected.
If I get the monitor is not a directory or file message again, I will take more notice of the situation and post the details.
Sorry I can be positively helpful.
David S.

James C,funny my card is an 8400GS too, works perfectly, I think from memory Jim1911 has (or had) one too. Actually nouveau should work with that card, I bet mageia is using it at first (as root do an lsmod to see if nouveau kernel module is loaded to see). Most will notice that nouveau is removed from this release.
As for the athlon with the old nvidia, I can't test that 96.xx driver, sorry. However if you get the kernel source you can compile it yourself.. since you have done so well at the prompt thus far
-
mikesLr.. what to do? the dodgy version works eh? Man, the kernel configuration compile differences are 2 usb patches and maybe a couple more unrelated modules compiled, that's it! Got me stumped why one works and one fails . My final intention is to release 2 versions, the other one with PAE enabled (for up to 64gig RAM) and I'm thinking a recompile of Barry's 2.6.39.3 against slacko's GCC for maximum compatibility. Seems these radeons are sensitive beasts, some nvidias too. Maybe there are issues in the current compile and perhaps the 'dodgy' version isn't so dodgy after all. It didn't like my Intel that's why I labeled it 'dodgy'. I'll do an experiment with that kernel and if it boot's ok on my intel with usb I might upload a new version for testing this weekend.

pemasu, thanks for gimp, will go to PPM to replace the ageing one there.

FlSynclient problem returns
Hi Mick
Just tried a pristine frugal install of 311.37 on my HP550 laptop.
The FlSynclient problem seems to have returned for me.....see screenie
Dropping out to terminal and running xorgwizard does fix it but as pemasu says this is not very user friendly.....
Cheers
Peter

Universal Installer - straight to USB flash - no problem
boot from USB flash drive straight to desktop on Eeepc 700 (original) - done
connect to wireless and get on net - yep, we have lift off
Then some fat guy comes and sits on your netbook with a 'lucky' dragon
Puppy Linux
All good

01micko. Dont remove the older Gimp. There might be users for it also. This Gimp 2.7.2 is development version toward 2.8.0. There might be bugs in it.
What I do like, is that Single window mode which fuses the 3 boxes, so it has Adobe Photoshop lookout.
There is remnant of Thunar in Menu > Filesystem. You have forgot to remove .desktop file.
I like that Slacko has newer glib and other framework. Gimp 2.7.2 needed those updated libs. I believe Slacko has newest libs in that area.

pemasu & 01micko,
The pet of Gimp 2.7.2 is not good :
"error package gimp.2.7.2.pet failed to install"
---------------------
Testing spup 311 :
a) now Numlock is OK
b) retrovol is bad. Always same problem: Sound is 'maxi' and it's impossible to modify 'full window' or configure it.. Always on 'CD' and never on PCM.

Tasgarth. Thank you of the info. I downloaded the pet and I got failed to install also. So....My uploads were yesterday bad. I uploaded the Gimp files now again. Now downloaded gimp-2.7.2-pet installed in Slacko just fine.
I have had sometimes problems with gFTP, it has changed the permissions and so on. I have started to use Fireftp plugin in Firefox or Filezilla. But there isnt ftp plugin for Seamonkey or is there....
Anyway......feedback is appreciated does the new uploaded gimp install ok.
Edit. gFTP again got permissions screwed. It is possible that I need smokey01 help to get permissions right back. I wont use gFTP anymore...

Tasgarth. Thank you of feedback. That DOC pet is misleading and I should probably remove it. Use online tutorials.
To have Gimp help browser working and able to read those tutorial files inside Gimp needs libwebkit installed. That would have grown the GImp pet size noticeably. So...I compiled Gimp-2.8.2 pet without webkit support. And that means the inbuild help browser is not included.
Use online tutorials. Here is one good one. http://gimp-savvy.com/
I did compile Gimp-2.8.2 in Puppy spirit without making it monster size.
EDIT. I removed Gimp_DOC pet. DOC_pet was automatically created when using splitpkg script. It didnt contain anything useful.

I did a manual frugal install of 311-37 and installed the mesa driver
from slickpet and then used SFS-Load on-the-fly to load the kernel
soure sfs and devs files.
I installed the ati proprietary driver next.

I installed the 311.
Enabled my application environment.
It all seem to work correctly.
As reported by others, sound is muted like in 310
Also the battery icon is white, so no way to know what the status is. As in 310 also.

G'day James C and Béèm,
That's "interesting". I finally bought myself a new desktop after replacing the original (dying) graphics card in my MD8818 with a new nVidia 8400GS card.
Hence my decision to try the ATI/radeon path in a new desktop. Seems this path also has potholes, just like the Medion/nVidia path.
