Another Logo

Just for fun, I whacked togehter another logo. This is just a low-res png bitmap, the original is all-vector in CorelDraw, so it can be transformed into any format or resolution with perfect fidelity.

I echo Springer's sentiment too, Lobster.

I started on Puppy 2 because it was a larger number than 1. Gave the impression it was "the latest". But development still seems going on in 1.0.x

So what's the drum... 1 vs 2 for example? Is 1 more suitable for some purposes than others? Not discussed on the pages I've found.

If it is discussed in geek-speak threads, then I've closed them and moved on immediately.

Fairly important set of questions I believe.

And yes, let the readers of the front page of each of the many websites have an obvious box that briefly details this sort of stuff, thanks :)

Thanks Lobster, that's a *great* update to the front page - there's a lot of stuff I wasn't even aware of that's very easily findable now. (And I've been using and trying various Puppy versions for a few months now, so that's surprising!)

Thnaks again for taking the time to do this - it's the sort of thing most of us couldn't have pulled off on our own.

Congrats for Beta

Congratulations to all for moving this build to beta!

As to puppylinux.org, there is a downloads page for community-built ISOs: http://puppylinux.org/user/downloads.php?cat_id=3

In the future, we can present side-by-side in the front pages the official and community builds of Puppy.

As to 1 vs 2, it's mainly a Linux kernel difference (2.4 vs 2.6), which means that the 2+ versions are able to handle newer devices. So users of old devices/PCs may be better off starting with the latest build of version 1, which is 1.09CE. Enhancing the version 1 build is the concern of 1.10CE effort described by Lobster.

If you want to help out in puppylinux.org, just register and email Puppian (the admin there) that you want to be admin, too.

Colour scheme and dog are great
I just do not think business has to be war . . .
How about a blue non combatants hat?

What you need is a dog in a tux. Think about it. That would take care of Tux, Puppy, and business.

Actually, the complete pup illustration (helmet and all) came from a clip-art library for which I own a legitimate license.

I'm not a graphic artist, but I can rework it with a tie and/or another hat (a Fedora? Not applicable Linux-wise, but cool otherwise) if you give me a few days.

As for the "no dogs" folks - I think those people need to take that up with Barry (and get a life!) - A dog is just a natural fit given that he chose to name the project "Puppy Linux". Dogs should strongly offend no one but Mohammedans, and I care less and less about what they find offensive.
Lobster wrote:Colour scheme and dog are great

Really, the choice was just opportunistic. Business is interesting partly because it contains elements of war (which is why SunTzu's Art of War is read mostly as a business book these days), diplomacy, cooperation/teamwork, and virtually every other aspect of human relationships. In this case, the tagline "ready for action!" just jumped out at me as the obvious choice, as it seemed to fit the illustration so well - and emphasize that PuppyPro includes the essentials professionals need today.

We could lose the helmet, but how about maybe the helmet *and* a tie? I personally don't think of the helmet as at all offensive or hostile. If the helmet is gone, we'll need another tagline, because, after all, nothing says "ready for action" like a TIE! ;-) (Don't get me wrong, I actually *like* ties, I just think the helmet fit the whole theme better.)

(warning: minor political rant ahead, certainly NOT intended to provoke a flamewar, or even a response) As for the blue (UN) helmet - No. Just no. Any effort I want to be associated with must be far more honest, trustworthy, moral, and effective than the UN. (See the London Times' scathing analysis of just last week to review how evil the UN has been in recent years (well-written and probably worth a read regardless of your view of the UN): http://www.timesonline.co.uk/printFrien ... 531,00.htm)

The helmet will just be an unnecessary distraction. Modern business success is about
speed and strategy and timing, not large mass and raw power, that is the long-term
flawed strategy of MS and others. Puppy is kinda the MIghty Mouse of distros. How
about the dog's hair shown as if wind-blown due to motion?

As for ties, modern business less frequently requires them, and women in business
whom we'd also like to adopt Puppy rarely wear ties!

I would propose a cell phone/pda or a GPS or the like hanging from the Puppy's neck.

I am OK re. your rant re. the UN. It is less than a bad joke, it has disintegrated into a
divisive force in the world. Without massive reform it deserves no funding or respect.

IMHO, YMMV ... doc

I have a couple of questions for the community:

1) After checking out the beta, do you think I should include XFCE4 as it was in the alpha for the Professional version or just leave it at a smaller size with JWM only.

I'm just looking for a general consensus. Thanks in advance!

2.) I know the idea has been tossed around some on various threads about implementing a splash screen for Puppy rather than the numerous lines of scrolling text. If someone would like to step up to the challenge it would be greatly appreciated, especially if we could have the option of seeing the text (it is quite useful).

Thank-you Mark.

I took a punt and went and looked at your upload directory he used, and at the second download the checksums matched.

I love it :)

Here we are, a screen cap of it running in XOrg at 1280x1024 (I think). There is just the one at the moment. It was taken after I did a couple of minor changes, and before I got stuck into downloading the extra apps I felt I would want, and do some customisation. Here is the full size image

You did a great job with it, Rhino. Thank you :)

Everything seems to be going well in this beta ;)

If running from CD
copy the file pup_2.10.sfs to your hard drive
(Puppy will look there first and boot faster from HD then loading from CD)

. . . we could do with a wizard for that . . .

:)

It really depends on how much more space it takes up, and if the additional bloat would slow it down any. I guess only you could answer that, mate.

I would like to see it. Would it be worth considering providing it as a dot pup?

Documentation on it might also be cool, to explain concisely why an alternative Window Manager could be handy, don't you think?

Pizzasgood is working on such a thingy, we talked about it at length in another thread and PM. Sounds like it might be what you are looking for.

I believe the concept would make it truly professional from the visual point; however it needs to be able to offer for selection whatever is available in pup_save files without having to be enabled to so do, perhaps?

AFAIK he is incorporating a similar one for shutdown as well.

We should wait and see, I guess :D

Thanks for your work, didn't see your post when I replied to MU. And I'm being frustrated again by the forum server's "Critical error" message again :( I did write this reply as soon as I posted the previous one in reply to Mark.

What's going on in the forum software one wonders?

It appears this post was sent twice, several minutes apart.

Yet this was during the 18 minutes that it was not possible to access the forum, between my post to MU and mine to Rhino which tried to follow about 2 minutes later.

I have deleted the second duplicate post and substituted this one instead drawing attention to the error messages that come up quite arbitrarily.

Looking at the number of people accessing the forum, I can't see any valid reason for it shutting down because of high bandwidth.

:)

I am glad I waited for this beta before running
Really good job Rhino.
Hope my comments are constructive ;)

I am using puppypro as an update to 2.10
it seems well behaved - my old icons (which I personally find clearer, simpler and easier to differentiate
- be interested what others think) are on screen
with the new ones in ROX looking good.

I was able to see the new icon set by runing Puppy from
memory. The buttons for printing and java setup was a good idea. Maybe one for webcams as the webcam wizard is being updated by Nickbiker . . .

Menu layout is clean and much clearer
Will XDG be too hard to implement?
If so what you have done is excellent.

Liked the Sun timer - not sure about the periodic table
Gimpshop as default - not sure
a new Mtpaint should be out soon?
Improved games for business - LOL
I don't play games but this is a good selection.

icons on JWM menubar much clearer
themes on seamonkey, nice looking
I tend to use the default as it is faster

Office integration seems fine
seemed to 'just work'

I am all for having xfce as default
as it is simple and elegant

If there is an option to view text
and the various command lines
"p for pause", being the first part of the "puppy pfix=ram" etc
is possible

I am finding that the backgrounds
when you view them are high res
all other options (to actually use them)
are low res - am using 1024 x 1280
Seems a good selection
(few of mine in there . . .) :)

Like Pizzasgood comments about tux :)

Have sent Barry a PM about using PuppyPro as a name
- OK he is on holiday but was online yesterday
will be back Sunday after his well deserved change of scenery.

Be very interested how others get on.

Everything seems to be going well in this beta ;)

After looking at XFCE4 again, I was able to clear up a couple of the problems I had previously struggled with and it seems to be better than ever! I will include XFCE4 for the next version. Since I included just the Java installer I should have space. XFCE4 does look very nice and clean so it should be a great fit. I will still leave JWM as the default, but will include a menu entry to switch between JWM and XFCE4.

Boot and shutdown, and I have an alpha-ish release up (it's been tested so little I'd put it at pre-alpha, though it runs great on my end. It's really the installer I worry about). I've been working on this between classes, work, and the neccessities of nature, so progress isn't especially fast. This weekend I plan to run some test on the fbcon module stuff, which when finished will remove the last major problem with it (invisible console text).

It won't have an option to switch between text and graphics, but it will save the messages in a textfile. Someday I'll be able to add fancier abilities, but that's way off in the distance for now.

For the record, I haven't used or even really paid much attention to this project (not enough time), but I've been keeping it in the corner of my eye and it sounds pretty cool. When I get the splash finished I'd be glad to help install it in this, or at least give detailed instructions, as time permits

Great stuff, thanks :)

Have you considered the possibility of fvwm95 as well? It does make for a nearer "look" to MS Windows than jwm - which it appears was its original intention, to look as like its menuing system as possible.

I wonder if fvwm95 has the ability to include quick start buttons on the taskbar.

Just a thought, anyway.
