the x birst processor is, alas, MIPS based rather than x86 so would require a cross compile of puppy to run unfortunately.

looks like a fun little machine apart from that

technically not a machine, but i want to get hold of one of these boards stick some cheap ram in it and a ide-cf adapter for puppy. maybe make a case out of lego or soemthing. dual core energy efficient pc for about £120

@aitch I like the epia boards, especially the cryptography and mpeg acceleration stuff they have built in. not sure if puppy supports it out of the box but sure I could get the drivers to work.

Would prefer to go for dual core for now though so my girlfriend can run windows(booo...) on it a little more comfortably

Go to your local School/business/charity. In the UK (I believe it is the same in other countries) there is legislation that means that old computers have to be processed through a licienced waste disposal company. By taking their old computer off their hands for free, you will be saving them about £10UKP. You do not need a waste carriers licience, as you will be "refurbishing" the computers, not dumping them...just get a signed letter from them to say that all the items are "believed working". Windows Vista and its bloat has made these types of machines a big problem to get rid of.

Ive just picked up thirty-five 2.6mhz/512mb/40mb, and ten 2.4mhz/1gb/40mb machines from a school and they thanked me for saving them £450.

I felt like I was burgling the place!

I bought three of these Latitude CS for about $30 each, one from Craigslist and the others from ebay. One wouldn't boot, but I was able to assemble the parts into two good-working laptops with the addition of a $13.50 power supply, a $15 HD and two $25 wireless cards.

The Latitude CS won't boot from the USB port or the PCMCIA CD-ROM, so I connected the empty HD to my desktop with a USB-IDE adapter cable to do a frugal install. Puppy really made the whole process plug-and-play. The wireless card worked fine with the Puppy module, though it may be a bit snappier with the Ndiswrapper XT driver, and that does enable the link and activity green light display.

It has been great fun putting together this little system. My thanks to those who have made it possible.

It's only about the size of a closed Laptop but twice as thick (it fits in my Dell Laptopbag incl. the Minikeyb. i have). The processor is passively cooled and the power supply has only a rated output of 50W !! I upgraded the RAM to 1Gig and the HDD with my old 40Gb WD i had left. Now it runs nicely and with Teenpup or Puppy 2.16 it's a real blast. And the cost was only 133Euros + Ram 55 Euros.

I GOT GIVEN AN OLD DELL LATITUDE CPi RECENTLY.
PII @400 MHZ , 128 MB RAM AND 6 G HD WITH WIN 98.
PUPPY 4.00 RUNS LIKE A SCALDED PUPPY IN IT. EVERYTHING WORKED RIGHT AWAY.

I have 2 of these. These boot up, run and install Puppy just fine. Puppy 4.0 Dingo works real well on em.

I get 6 hours on the EX with secondary Battery caddy slipped into CDROM Slot. I also on one of my Hardrive Caddies use a IDE to CF adapter and run a 8 gig seagate microdrive also.

picked up for just over 200$ .. came with xp.... not any more. installed puppy 4.31 from a 2 gig jump drive without a hitch cept some dummy forgot to make the partition bootable.

i am impressed with graphix and hd audio. i have paid more for video cards in the old days.
hmmmm....theres only 1 screw in the case...i wonder what happens when i take it out????

I am retired and volunteer a couple of time per week at a local thrift store where people often dump off obsolete computers, etc that we usually haul to the recycling center at our own expense.

Typically:

160 mhz pentium
48 meg EDO RAM
CDROM drive (Won't boot from that, have to use floppy)
Serial mouse only
2 hard drives, 1 6.4 gig, 1 about 1 gig , both wiped clean

Partitioned both drives, linux swap file, ext3 file system

Used wakepup and booted from Puppy 4.3 CD

Worked but glacially slow.

Found a couple of 32 meg EDO RAM chips my junk and installed.

Did Puppy full install.

I am typing this on that machine now and its not the fastest thing in the world but its tolerable and user friendly. Not bad for a free computer.

FWIW I have Lighthouse pup on an old HP 4150 that my totally non-geeky wife uses and als have a Debian lenny box.

You'll find that a normal installation to hard drive will work better on such low-end hardware.
