ttuuxxx managed to reduce my grey minimalist effort to 8.23K jpg ... http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=577889#577889

[but I don't know how they managed it]

Convert it to greyscale in gimp, and resave as jpg you can test quality parameters and see how low you can drop slider without being pixelated around edges, also cut height to 900px, it's unusual format for wallpaper

it seems i can get some two-tone gradients to fit within the size limit & look decent but including the logo or even some text into them really brings the quality down.

there is some halo action going on around the logo or just plain text when added. looking at a way to get around that if possible. im wondering if its the way the fonts are made that is causing the halo effect im seeing.

tested on saluki here is a screener.

edit: attached is a plain grey/blue wallpaper that looks decent without a logo & fits the 8k size limit.

ok here is something with a logo that fits in size. let me know if it looks ok to you micko. im workin on trying to get rid of the lines in it but seems to be a losing battle with the 8 kb target.

screen shot below of it used in saluki alpha & attached is the wallpaper.

Ok, lets say I have 60k to spend on wallpapers, I can include one I have @8k and 2 of maxerro's @~1k each, for a sum of 10k leaving 50k to spend on 5, so one can be say 30k and the other 4 must fit into the 20k. Make sense :?: :)

I think Dejan created the logo I'll have a look for the original. EDIT it's here

take a look at this one micko. regular size is attached.

i can probably get several color combos & this size logo all around 10 kb's will try more ideas tomorrow.

if they are 4:3 monitor ratio it will trim off a little more in size as well.

It's been suggested that perhaps you've been powdering your nose with too much concrete dust with this chain-yanking challenge of yours, Micko.....those requirements aren't really set in cement, are they?

Seriously, what's wrong with a decent, attractive default wallpaper, even at the expense of a few kb's? Not a deal-breaker surely, especially when you consider that it is to be the "face" of the current Slacko to those who may not already be familiar with Puppy, never mind the rest of us kennel-dwellers..

As an example of what i mean, may i refer to this thread?

Mick how about a 1 pixel wallpaper in PNG format?

85 bytes only. The same thing in JPG is about 632 bytes.

Hi pacer106

Looks nice :)

In slacko (and wary/racy) there is automatic cropping of 4:3 images to suit other screen aspect ratios. Most wideys are 16:9 so a proportion is cropped from top and bottom of the images to cater for wide screens automatically. it happens in ~/.xinitrc on first and subsequent boots and in the wallpaper setter.

Therefore, default images in puppies with this feature should be 4:3, and any detail in the wall should be shifted up (or down as appropriate) such that this detail is not cropped out when a widescreen is detected.

I should have mentioned this earlier  .

- @ CatDude and russoodle!

FYI, I am now retired from the construction industry and am starting study (fulltime) next week, so Slacko dev has to be pretty much wound up before then as I wont have time for in depth development.

Note, walls that don't make the cut will be packaged into a extra wallpapers pack, as many as I can get together.

i have started playing around with blender 3d. here are a few tests i have managed to get saved & thought i would share. they are very simple & not too busy.

i am still figuring things out. i thought these were saved in my usual 1366x768 & 1024x768 sizes but it seems i messed up in that area lol.

files are also attached for those who do not like photo sharing sites.

update: added normal sized widescreen & standard 4:3.
