It makes sense to have only one media subsystem in the base. Gstreamer is a very convenient one because so many applications can use it: midori, pidgin, ease, bluez, ucview, thoggen, maybe more as we go. I highly encourage everyone to add the media player of their choice.

You can add whatever power optmizations you like to /etc/acpi/powersave.sh, performance.sh, and turbo.sh.

maxpro4u,
If you mean the weather alert in your last link, it is a flash video as well.
So you should have flashplayer to view it.
Time savers:
Find packages in a snap and install using Puppy Package Manager (Menu).

I'll have to uninstall mplayer and try to find what I was looking at.

just did a frugal install and here is the site that I was looking for:

http://www.newsnet5.com/subindex/news/news_livestream1

parole pops up and says
A Microsoft Media Server (MMS) protocol source plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed.

I copied flp_devx_.010 to flp_devx.011, added that sfs and rebooted... then I ran the ati package... and tried to insmod fglrx... low and behold, it never created the correct module SO then I installed your pet package for just the fglrx.ko, ran depmod-FULL -a and rebooted. IT WORKED!

Booted Fluppy 011 from USB on the MSI netbook.

gparted still fails to recognize the NTFS partitions.

The supported filesystems pop-up says that ntfsprogs is used re. NTFS - is it possible that ntfsprogs is missing?

EDIT:

I just did a search on my Frugal install of Fluppy 011 and "ntfsprogs" was not found.

Build issue: source has "atom" appended, kernel does not.

#1350 Post by bwh1969 »

@ Jemimah : When I unzip the kernel source into /usr/src then symlink this to /lib/modules/2.6.35.7/build (symlink needs to be called "build") for virtualbox, I get this error in the /var/log file when I run

Code: Select all

# /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

Code: Select all

Makefile:170: *** Error: /usr/src/linux (version 2.6.35.7atom) does not match the current kernel (version 2.6.35.7). Stop.
There seems to be a conflict somewhere in the source where the kernel source has "atom" appended but the kernel does not.

Rebuilding the virtualbox modules worked with 2.6.34.7.

I am using the sfs file:
http://puppeee.com/files/sfs/VirtualBox3.2.8.sfs which inserts the modules for the pupeee kernel, but the rest of the sfs works (which is the buld of the squash file anyway).

the command "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" rebuilds 3 modules in a sudirectory: /lib/modules/2.6.3x.x/misc where the x's are numbers for the running kernel

And the 3 modules are :
vobxdrv.ko
vboxnetflt.ko
vboxnetadp.ko

Is there something wrong with the source uploaded? I am running an athlon neo (64 bit in my asus 1201T netbook). I don't think this should matter?

Anyway, I need help. It might be easier since you have something that seems to build things correctly, to boot with the sfs, issue the command and package the 3 new modules in the /misc subdirectory. If you had time to do that, I will be inclined to make a donation:-) I will if you do that paypal thing!

I'm not sure I understand the question.

I opened gparted from a USB boot and, as it was in Fluppy 010, it now in Fluppy 011 fails to recognize the NTFS partitions.

Then I looked in gparted VIEW and File System Support where it says that ntfsprogs is needed.

I then went to pfind and searched for ntfsprogs, which did not show up.

HOWEVER ...

I just ran gparted from a Frugal install on another netbook and it sees the NTFS partitions just fine.

For some reason booting from USB on the other netbook is preventing gparted from seeing NTFS partitions.

What do I do to overcome that, please?

Here is the mms plugin.

There's actually quite a few other plugins, but it's mostly for esoteric stuff or stuff already handled by the ffmpeg plugin. So let me know if it asks for any more plugins because it's possible that I missed a few important ones.

Ntfsprogs is already the latest version (none of the commands are named ntfsprogs).

You need the attached configuration file. Rename it to .config and put it into the kernel source tree. Then build the kernel and make symlinks to the kernel tree as shown.

Code: Select all

#cd /lib/modules/2.6.35.7/
# ls -al
total 1060
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 2011-01-12 17:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2011-01-11 22:38 ..
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     31 2011-01-11 22:20 build -> /mnt/home/linux-2.6.35.7fluppy/
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2011-01-10 13:14 initrd
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 2011-01-10 16:41 kernel
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 550757 2011-01-11 22:43 modules.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 335764 2011-01-11 22:43 modules.dep
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 178377 2011-01-11 22:43 modules.symbols
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root     31 2011-01-12 17:14 source -> /mnt/home/linux-2.6.35.7fluppy/
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 33 2011-01-10 16:41 updates

I've been intending to make a source sfs that makes this easy but it's a pain since I'm trying to maintain 3 kernels and I keep upgrading them. :/

OK, perhaps I misunderstood the gparted reference to it.

Anyhow, how do I get past the problem where in a USB boot gparted fails to see NTFS partitions, please?

Edoc,

I'm not sure. It sees my NTFS paritions. Is there some new kind of partition?

Are you sure it sees the disk? Can you mount it and such?

You can do a frugal with Grub4dos without reparitioning.

Here try these. There is a donation button on Puppeee.com if you want to donate. Donations go toward hosting costs and buying new netbook models.

Hey

#1359 Post by bwh1969 »

Saved me. I did manage to figure out the DOT config thing going to the sources directory on the net, and got it to build, but I got the insmod error (invalid module format), then came back and saw your first post on "building the kernel" and I got a bit choked up. I tried to make kernels before and always failed:-(

So thanks for posting the PET... it works of course:-)

I made a donation a ways back but I will do so again just because you folks deserve it!

I can mount and unmount /mnt/SystemReserved (sda1) ntfs Size: 100MB and /mnt/sda2 ntfs Size: 148.9GB and see the contents.

gparted within a USB boot is showing the following:
Partition File System Size Used Unused Flags
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
unallocated unallocated 149.05 GiB --- ---

I am only just keeping up with the structure of things using Frugal, to have to deal with a MS-based structure using Grub4dos within the MS system is something I definitely do not want to do.

If our son didn't have one or two apps he is desperate to run under MS, until WINE matures a bit more so it can handle them, I would wipe the MS junk and go 100% Linux.
