You have the 'black screen of death' problem which has been reported quite often now. One cause is Lupu not recognising video hardware properly or not attaching the right video driver (esp true of certain integrated Intel graphics chips).

The 2nd option is to us the recently released 5.0.1 which is 5.0 with the old manual setup menus back. You can find it here:

Quirky 100 just works with spotify while lupu-500 and also luci100 shut down to prompt and I have to do xwin and have not found a way to activate spotify.

I use the wine that comes with lupu-500 while in Quirky I maybe have another wine?
Does Spotify run under Wine? If so then the difference in Wine could be the problem. I tried Spotify but it is not available in my country and I could find no way to get around that.

5.01 and GMA 3150

#143 Post by prehistoric »

Just in case there was any doubt, I've tried 5.01 on that Asus Eee PC 1001P with GMA 3150 graphics. The change makes it easier to do a manual set up, but the end results are still the same as I was able to achieve before: tearing when FF scrolls under Xorg and 800x600 in Xvesa.

I don't own that machine, but the owner is eager to get Lucid Puppy or Puppeee running on it, and is cooperative about experiments.

I noticed that the last character (either number or M) was clipped in the clock. The "swallow window" is a bit too small. I fixed by editing /root/.jwmrc-tray. I changed line 38 to read for 12 hour display:

Code: Select all

<Clock width="44">
or for 24 hour display:

Code: Select all

<Clock format='%H:%M" width="44">
The width of 44 pixels worked fine for my 1366 by 768 video resolution. You may have to try different values for other resolutions to fit you needs.

There is a report in another thread that spotify works under Icewm but not JWM in Lucid. Also read that luci-100, or 5.0.1, if you prefer evidently has Icewm as an option in the Quickpet menu, so you should be able to confirm it for yourself quite quickly on that install.

Hope that helps.
Thanks indeed for caring about my problems with using Spotify in Lupu.

I give it a try. I have never done such changes before but I test and report what happens. say 30 minutes from now?

Jay, you guys are not only generous and caring, you are smart too. :)

That works. I tested several wine programs and also Spotify and all of them survived.

I used the ml1? pet. Had no idea which one was expected to use though.

But I hate to say I will most likely still use Quirky for a while because
when I use /tmp to make a copy of a cache flash file and make a copy of it in mp4 then Quirky 1.00 can play it while lupu 5.0 fail at it.

That is gxine in lupu. Have not tested anything else. Do you guys know if some other player do play them in lupu?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

do_IRQ: 0.107 No irq handler for vector (irq -1)

I must admit for several versions already I have this issue.
Altho it doesn't seem to harm in working with lucid, I had hoped it went away, but it doesn't. Therefor I bring it to attention.

My machine is a Medion MD8818 with sata HDD, 1GB ram and dual core processor.

During the boot process this passes on the screen, but I found two places in the boot kernel log as follows.

Code: Select all

LUPU-501 "Forgets" Network Configuration

#148 Post by Bamoset »

I've noticed that if I leave my computer (HP Pavilion a1213w-b, Lupu-501) connected to the internet and left idle for a few hours, Lupu-501 seems to "forget" its network configuration. The "Blinky" shows activity, but I can't connect to any site on the internet. Rerunning the Puppy Network Wizard returns normal operation. I did a quick search of the forum but didn't see any mention of this problem. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Yes I have seen this kind of behavior also.
When I look with iwconfig, the connection seems to be there, but doesn't really work. I have to redo the network setting again. I have this already in versions before 501, but forgot to report.

Desktop drive icons size still zero.

Desktop drive icons size still zero.
As soon as the desktop comes up after first boot, hovering over the desktop drive icons indicates zero GB, but the file system is correctly indicated.
So this issue, long outstanding, is still there.

Lu can't compile Madwifi-hal

#151 Post by Whitesnow »

Hi, I cannot compile madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4126-20100324 (and after I will Hostapd that needs Madwifi source compiled) because this error on Lucid Puppy 5.0.0 (plus kernel and devx).

After make command in console:

Code: Select all

include/linux/mm.h:454:63: error: "NR_PAGEFLAGS" is not defined
include/linux/mm.h:502:62: error: "NR_PAGEFLAGS" is not defined
All went well with previous 4.3.1, plus kernel and devx.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tmp file dates (bootxx.log)

#152 Post by Béèm »

Tmp file dates (bootxx.log)
In previous releases I had bootxx.log files which were some 20 hours before the boot time.

Now I have the first files created on boot 2 hours later then the boot time.
So there has been a change, but still weird. (see picture)

More intel issues (still on 5.00)

#153 Post by Ibidem »

Using an intel 945 GME with "intel" driver, Lucid Puppy 5.00.
Occasional flickers, with frequent black screens in JWM while using Seamonkey.
No black screens in IceWM (Jemimah's 1.3.6 for 4.3). :?:
I like IceWM, but didn't expect that.

Lucid Lynx: i915 driver, IceWM 1.3.6--No issues (well, rare freezes) since before beta1.
Ran too many things to count.

Other than that, Lucid Puppy is pretty good--sound works right, mhwaveedit lets me convert mp3s to ogg.
The lack of a "real" browser meant I had to manually download Seamonkey so I could connect.

Anyone know if this is fixed in 5.01?

I am seeing a LOT of dependency failures when trying to add additional apps, be it the game "gbrainy" or OpenOffice or others.

I tried the default ubuntu repository and a couple of others - same result.

Is ubuntu blocking access to some dependencies because they are unhappy with the Puppy Lucid project or is something else at fault?

ubuntu-lucid-main has some limited apps and that is where I have been seeing the multiple failures.

ubuntu-lucid-multiverse has more and when I tried the three gnuboy-related additions everything downloaded fine.

I don't see anything about ubuntu-lucid-universe in Quickpet or Puppy Package Manager.

Based on a Lucid-related thread I then tried to run Update from Quickpet which promptly locked-up my laptop so that only CTRL-Backspace worked and once dropped to a prompt I ran "xwin"

Puppy Package Manager shows that I successfully installed the three gnuboy app files and associated dependencies but there in no entry in FUN and "gnuboy" is not recognized in Console.

How should I proceed as my youngest was excited about playing Gameboy games on his laptop!

Have you enabled all of the Ubuntu repositories in the PPM?

If not, click on "configure package manager" and on the next screen check the approprate repositories.....maximum of 5.Exit the package manager completely and when it's restarted the checked repositories should show up.

Regarding the dependencies, its necessary to update the package database...........click configure again and on the next screen click on "Update Now".......depending on the speed of your computer it may take a while to download and process the package database. The PPM seems to handle dependencies much better after the update.

HTH.

Cannot set German keyboard layout

#157 Post by IVIarcell »

I have just installed Lucid Puppy and am amazed how easy it was to set up my wlan card.

Unfortunately the supposedly easy thing of setting the keyboard layout to German fails miserably using the GUI and using xorg.conf. :(

How do I set the keyboard layout so that it stays German when I restart the xserver? As I said: it's not working when I click "setup" on the desktop and select the first option there and set the keyboard layout.

EDIT: If I press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [1] and enter letters in the text console it responds like a German keyboard. But when I return to the xserver it's English again. Frustrating!

HTH.
I read the "Add repo help" and it was as clear as mud to my muddled mind.

Since the Repo addresses are known and the target file for the variables is known why is this not just automated in a script?

I appreciate more than I can express all that the volunteer folks do for Puppy but am already overwhelmed by the nightmare of CUPS (not working for 2 weeks here and no light at the end of that tunnel), so dealing with this only adds to the frustration of maintaining 5 laptops. (Not your problem, just probably not restricted to my context of Puppy usage.)

These highly detailed text mods to obscure files would be impossible for most newbies - so access to the additional resources is walled-off from them.

For me, with constant interruptions, it is a long drawn-out process to try and concentrate on the many discrete demands of perfect code on each of multiple loooooong lines of code.

Rant Mode OFF.

Sorry, a whining 7yr old has tapped-into the last frayed nerve in my central-
patience repository ... sigh. :-/

Like I said in the previous post: this doesn't work.
I followed the instructions from http://www.xfree86.org/current/XKB-Config2.html#3, but used "de" instead of "us". Xorg seems to get the settings from somewhere else...
