pps files in OO.o

01Micko,
Opening a slideshow in a .pps file using OO.o's default (fullscreen) settings works fine in IceWM, so it looks like you are correct in thinking the problem is with JWM. I forget who reported the sound not working but mine doesn't either. One machine I tried it on does not have JRE installed and OO.o informed me I needed it for sound to work, but the one that does have JRE still has no sound working. That one gives no error messages, just no sound although I did see the speaker icon. Needless to say the sound does work in other programs (GMplayer, Pmusic). Maybe sound is too much to ask for?

On a different subject, when I had my netbook running 5.0.9 and my desktop running 4.3.1, I had no problems printing from the netbook through the printer attached to the desktop (an old Deskjet 895c). I've now upgraded the desktop to 5.1 and the netbook can't see the printer! Suggestions anyone?

Once again thanks to all for the immense effort of creating this fine OS! With this newest distro Linux is finally approaching the "friendliness" and usefulness of the big high-dollar OSs. To put it better, I can finally see the time coming when Joe and Jane Average will say "why should I pay Bill Gates or Steve Jobs $100 for the right to use my computer? Puppy Linux is just as good and easier to use!" Good job guys. And girls!

When your desktop was running Puppy 4.3.1, it had CUPS 1.1.23. This version automatically shared its printers with other machines on the network.

Now that you have Puppy 5.1, you are using CUPS 1.4.x. In this version you need to specify that you want to share a printer. This is done in two places.

1. When you add a printer, there is a checkbox for Share This Printer.

2. Under the Administration tab, look in the Server section. There is a checkbox for Share Printers Connected to this System.

5.1 install ipex box: dual cd drives problem at shutdown

happy to report the install went ok until closing down sequence....

This box has two cd drives in it, it couldn't write the puppy510.sts file across because it was trying to mount a drive with no cd in it, not the one that it was installed from.

It just got stuck!

oh well :?

dell, compaq and ibm boxes to test next week

what the! ?glxgears : 01mick??

same box as started with (acer)

needed to put a scsi card in to recover some old pascal programming and matching dataset from a syquest removable drive cartridge (some will remember them).

needed to borrow a irq and decided to use the internal video's

everything went well with the transfer,

box even seemed to be working faster.

just out of curiosity I decided to run glxgears

console said no irq and it was falling back to busy waits:20 (whatever that means)
but
glxgears was now adveraging 8230 frames per 5seconds

it had been adveraging 3600 and later when I had put it back as before with an irq was again.

strange :?:

5.1 and winmodems

has anyone looked at the problem of winmodems with 5.1?

works well with 4.3.1 but not with 5.1.

regards
scsijon

edit: it looks like rerwin looked into this with quirky, maybe he could be asked to do so again for 5.1.

Howdy. Icewm works somewhat better than jwm.
However, sound doesnt work.
A 'buntu forum said gstreamer modules were needed.
I got the 4 from PPM. 2 named 'bad' and 2 'ugly'.
Also installed perl-base-5.10.1, perl-5.10.1,
and perl-modules-5.10.1
Perlapi-5.10.1 dependency not resolved.
Still no .pps sound.
Help?

This does not bother me but I found this in a review of Lucid Puppy in one of the Linux Magazines.

Something to think about.
I've tried previous versions of Puppy Linux and its derivatives and always dumped them because of one issue: the bundled packages cannot be uninstalled as they are read-only files. Is this still the same with Lupu?

Booting "live" CD-RW [made using lupu-510.iso] with pupsave on partition on a Flash Drive.
This updated the pupsave that was originally made by lupu-501. [Seemed to work/complete OK]
Then applied the 002 update.

PROBLEM
1.
(a) When I tried to use "Menu->Setup->CUPS"...
Instead of a Firefox window opening...
I got [and still get] the "Browser Installer" opening.

(b) To do the necessary I used [entered manually in a terminal]:
From /usr/sbin/cups_shell, line 36:
exec defaultbarehtmlviewer http://localhost:631/
This runs the CUPS setup window in the default html viewer.
This appeared to work OK, the printer now functions.

2. Also get the browser installer when I click the "Browse" icon on the desktop.

I am hot on the heels of the LUCID Black Screen of Death bug
I did not install Gridwars2 or Firefox 4 beta and still have a corrupted load from 510.sfs and I have just copied that to HD - about to reboot to see if that is the problem

Batton down the hatches, sardines and mermaids first (last?)
Not sure anymore . . . :?

Update:
I don't get it
ISO OK
saving to USB keydrive OK, so not hard drive
(I thought I might have a hardware problem)
I am in Fatdog 64
No one else is reporting this so what can it be?
. . . a piece of stray config from a beta of Lucid?
Well no because I used a fresh save file onto USB

My latest theory is that I was saving in ext3
and swapped back to ext 2 and . . . [shrug]
see enclosed image which is a new error message . . .

Someone is out to get me
I need bacofoil - must build tin foil hat
with last remaining geek strength . . .

Bootflash from full hdd installation

Hi,

I did a full hdd installation with Lucid puppy 5.1. Then I downloaded and installed the two update pet files. Now I try to make a usb bootflash at a pendrive.
If I take the iso file from original live cd, I get with fdd installation the error after booting fdd:

could not find kernel image: linux

From where I should take the iso file to include the two updates with sfs ?

Svgt

Printer sharing

rcrsn51,

Thanks for the prompt tips but I'd already tried those settings and more, to no avail. For good measure I tried "allow internet printing" and a few more also. I'm wondering about wireless driver compatibilities--both computers are using wireless interfaces and the netbook is using NDISwrapper. Maybe I should play with Samba shares this weekend? August weather in Arizona isn't conducive to fishing.

Hmmm, just looked at this post and discovered that it doesn't make much sense out of context. What I'm talking about is an inability to share a printer between a desktop running 5.1 and a netbook running 5.0.9, both connected to a Belkin router through wireless interfaces. I have both computers set to share printers through the CUPS web interface. It's a minor bug but annoying.

@kevin bowers: I just tested your printer configuration and it does work. Machine A has Lupu 5.10 with an attached printer. It is declared sharable (both settings). Machine B has Lupu 5.10. It can see Machine A's printer. This is over a wired network but that shouldn't make any difference.

[Edit] I just checked this with a wireless laptop running Quirky and it could also see the Lupu printer. Is this an issue with your router blocking port 631?

[Edit] Can you ping the desktop computer from the laptop?

rcrsn51,

I don't know how to ping another computer.

At this writing I am at work connected to a Windows network through an Actiontek router and the netbook does not see the network printer. I don't know if CUPS is configured to see Windows printers or no?

Maybe a problem with the netbook NDISwrapper? Or the fact thet it's running 5.0.9?

I don't know how to ping another computer.
Go to the desktop machine and get its IP address with the command

Code: Select all

ifconfig
Go to the netbook and type the command

Code: Select all

ping aaa.bbb.cc.dd
I don't know if CUPS is configured to see Windows printers or no?
If this is a standalone networked printer, it depends on what protocol it is using to advertise itself. If it is connected to a desktop machine and declared as a Windows shared printer, CUPS does not automatically detect it. You have to install it manually using the smb: protocol.

After installation Nvidia 96 driver menu button disappears

After the installation of Nvidia 96 driver the menu button disappears and the right click menu is shorter. There are no shutdown entries. If I try to reboot from console the system hangs up. All windows are surrounded in red color.

New booting of system doesn't help.

I have asked about this in the past as well.

Example: Abiword is clutter in my installs as I always install OpenOffice and have Geany and the other smaller editors for smaller tasks. Puppy Package Manager does not present Abiword as an installed app which I may uninstall.

WDYT?

If you have set up a firewall using the default (quick with no questions), it will interfere with printer sharing.
As to accessing printers connected to a Windows printer, I have had to set up a specific ip address for each printer to get that to work.

What is the best way to uninstall the Default Firewall or to disable the settings that interfere with shared printers?

It sounds as though that feature needs a large warning re. the interference with shared printers as it could be the reason many of us had printer troubles over the past couple of months.

A different driver my work better.
Try this method to install Nvidia drivers.
