Another manual frugal install of Wary 102, this time on the old P3 test box. Initial boot had working sound, internet and the correct screen resolution

Hi

I tested Wary on three machines.

Fast box
Nvidia nforce chipset, AMD X2 processor (around 3GHz dual cpu), Nvidia 8400GS, 2gig RAM.
My wireless rt73usb device was not recognised after boot. Easy fix, loaded it with Dougal's Network Wizard and straight online. Not much testing on this box as it is not Wary's target. Oh, got the 2 barks at a nice volume (normally on this machine it would be muted at pristine boot).

Intermediate box
AthlonXP 2100+ processor (around 1600MHz), SiS chipset, AC97 sound, Radeon 9200 pro grahics, 768M RAM.
Booted and got the 2 barks. Modem was plugged before boot, 3G Huawei e169. No problems to connect and straight online. Did the video upgrade and was suggested to get the Dri package, installed no problem and glxgears ran no problem at around 3500 farmes per 5 seconds, pretty much the same as Lupu. Did a frugal install with Universal installer to sda10 and manually edited menu.lst, I already have grub4dos installed. One thing though, I had to find the file in /tmp/NEWGRUBTEXT manually as it didn't pop up in nicoedit for me. When I did the save at shutdown it didn't offer to put it in the dir where the frugal was made. Would be nice if it did.
Basically went pretty good. I believe this is a Wary target as this machine I built about 7 years ago. It used to run Mandrake and XP but is now 100% Puppy.

Old Box
Pentim III Coppermine @ 600MHz, 256M RAM, nvidia Vanta graphics, acx pci wireless device, SB-Vibralux 16 sound (a really nice sound card ).
Booted no problem, can't report on 2 barks at boot as SB needs configuration with alsawizard which always goes flawlessly.
No network cards recognised at all. I have that troublesome realtek 8139too too! So I ran ndiswrapper for the acx (using SNS). Worked beautifully! Straight online! Rebooted and everything saved and worked fine after reboot. Tried to upgrade the video with the wizard but my connection was too slow and I was getting impatient! (Was late at night). The connection was slow due to my machine is in my shed which is 10 metres from the house and at least another 5 m to the router through a couple of walls and it was raining heavily. Signal strength was down a good 50%. I had the 3G modem handy so decided to hotplug it in the P III. It took about 45 seconds before the splash went away. That's okay, keyed in my settings and straight online. Did the video upgrade in a matter of moments and glxgears returned about 1000f/5s. Not bad for an oldie.

Wary 102 just won a major prize! The first distro ever (and I've tried/used lots) to not have a driver for eth0, which is a Realtek 8139/8139C/8139C+. Anyway, I loaded 8139too, and off we went, using it now. Same vintage machine as the post above- Intel Coppermine 600MHz.

Fresh manual frugal install of 102 on the P4 test box.Everything working on initial boot......sound,internet and correct screen resolution.
Glad this box doesn't have a Realtek 8139....
Installed Mesa...... new downloader works great.

There seems to be something not quite right with the mplayer plug-in. If i click on an mp4 file somewhere on the internet, the plug-in loads and it begins to buffer the file. Normally after around 10% buffering, the file will then play, buffereing the rest as it goes. Not in Wary. In this version, it buffers to 100% before playback begins. In previous versions of Wary, behavior was normal.

Glad this box doesn't have a Realtek 8139...

Whether they know it or not, there are more folks by a very large margin that do have one than have eg 3/4G modems and all the fancy kit that misguided folks want to connect to a compact distro designed specifically for older kit!

Just bought a Huawei E1550 3G modem with a week’s worth of surftime included to test on wary-102.

Results are mixed. I get the mode switch-over notifications and that the modem is ready. I followed the setup instructions, making the choices as suggested and filled in the fields as appropriate for my carrier:

My Canon i965 printer, connected via a Windows computer, using the driver from Takushi at Kyoto University, works fine. Just had to add the usual symlink named libtiff.so.4 to whatever version of libtiff is installed- libtiff.so.3.8.2 in this case.

Manual frugal install of Wary 102 on another old box.....500 mhz Celeron with 128 mb ram and no swap.Everything(sound,internet and display) worked on initial boot, when rebooting Wary automatically made a 200 mb swap file. Seems to be running pretty quick.

I have just installed (full install)Wary 1.0.2. I have a 3G modem E169x from virginbroadband (not) and I went through the Pupdial setup. After a couple of false starts which it ultimately resolved for itself it got to the connect stage then the dreaded message I have had from Quirky and Lupu and Wary 098 "The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code =16)" This installation has correctly found the modem etc after a couple of tries but ultimately came up with the same result.Actually it does not matter much because I have used the modem on XP and it is as slow as a wet week,I am in a good coverage area with a tower close and it is no faster than dial up. Still it would be interesting to get it to work on Puppy.
Another thing with Wary, in both 098 and 102 the PS2 mouse locks up at intervals and I have to switch off the computer direct. I have just found out that if i remove the USB mouse from the PS2 adapter and plug it in direct to the Usb then all is well other than the mouse pointer sticks momentarily from time to time. This is the only Puppy that has ever done that and I have tried most of them.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have notified Rerwin of this problem but had not tried 102 at that time

Edit. The problem with the modem was an iffy USB socket. I changed to a plug in the back of the box and all was well. DUH!!!!!!!

That init string does indeed work - I'm connected using it right now.

I recognize that init string from the log file when I ran the modem in windows.
It's interesting to see that there is no mention of 'AT+CGDCONT=1' in that log.

My guess: The modem can store groups of settings. ATDT*99***1# uses the first group and *99# uses the default group. If there's only one group then it is the default.

I might have got my string from ms xp -- I don't remember. I wonder, was the old string wired into wvdial.conf or was it the result of interrogating the modem?

Mine connects at the same speed in Puppy and ms -- 3,600,000b/s. Does yours? But the marketing says 7,200,000. Funny that it is exactly half.

Also, the carrier is detected straight away for me.

Master volume does not affect sound nor muting works, I can set PCM volume in Retrovol.

Sound card is an integrated one...

Master volume worked flawlessly in Wary 030 (I know, not much of help...)

Also conversation quality in Skype is the worst ever, I may guess it's Mic control unaffecting too...

Any tip?
