Now, as you can see, I'm heavily compiling new apps for Puppy 3.01 series (when possible, statically, so any puppy series can benefit of these binaries), unfortunately, on my new refurbished machine, HP d530 c, wireless is not working (the same wireless adapter NETGEAR WG311v3, works fine in Puppy 3.01 and 4.2.1 via ndiswrapper), I would be happy to support 4.3.1, if I'll able to solve wireless problem

What am I missing? In this thread, about bringing back Puppy 4.31, everyone is ignoring Puppy 4.3.2-SCSI 2.6.30.5 full older modem support. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 886#451886

There was a Puppy 4.32 project, but ttuuxxx replaced it with Puppy 4.3.2-SCSI 2.6.30.5 full older modem support.

Am I misunderstanding something? It seems to me that this thread is rumbling along without knowing all the facts!

I was going to mention 4.3.2 earlier in this thread, but then remembered sending a recent pm to ttuuxxx in which he replied that it was strictly a bugfix version, and that he's no longer supporting it.

- There was a really swell "exe" version of 431 2.6.30.5, which was loaned and lost, and can't seem to find again because of hosting link failures. This was so easy for the windoze users as it installed directly and so cleanly. Wasn't (431) this also the version that "Pizzasgood" made real multi-user?

- As to someone modifing 431, would like to ask for a "don't load sfs to memory" switch. There is a forum link like "initrd-noram", but i've been unable to implement the suggestions <:( Duh

- I really respect the newer versions being made, because people with Vista and Win7 have become aware of choices - and want to try Puppy and only have recent hardware.
- But as this link points out, it would seem that much of my older hardware was made so well that it is not going to die soon, and 431 versions really never offer a problem, and there is a scuzi drive on one cabinet.

I concur that puppy 4.3.1 can be useful to many and should be maintained to stay relevant. I don't see any mention here of my effort to keep 4.3.1 vital. My thread does not appear to be updated, because I maintain it by editing a set of postings by subject. Please check it out and consider using it as a central place to start customized upgrades.

My initial goal was a single package to update 4.3.1 with all of my modem and modprobe improvements to keep puppy robust. It has grown from there. I continue to keep that package updated as I make further refinements (currently to support Lucid, but to be back-ported to the 4.3.1 upgrade package soon).

My intent is to add more "essential" updated package groups and a list of links to applications that will "just work". I am open to adding a section (posting) for the more daring upgrades like seamonkey and dependencies, but would rely on the more knowledgeable of you to advise on its content.

Let's continue discussion about it here, so as to leave that thread as an unintimidating resource. I look forward to working with all of you.

BTW, I do not care to create an entire new version of 4.3.1, and all that that entails, so am trying to make it easy to construct an improved 4.3.1. But I can support anyone caring to take on that project.

In order to easily save video streams it is necessary for me to
use a newer Puppy like Wary or Luci.

If not for that issue, I would still be using 4.xx only.

Ok it looks like its a go for this weekend as a start,
I'm not going to use woof, I'm going to manually edit the sfs and build the iso's.

For this project to work we will need dedicated people willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, Why you may ask? Because that's what I do, and if I don't feel like its a worthwhile project, why would I waste time going any further with it.
I don't play around with wireless, so if there are any wireless pro's out there, speakup.
Basically what I will do is provide an updated base that modern versions of seamonkey/firefox will work on.
Plus I'll update the "P" applications, I don't see a need to update things like geany,mtpaint, etc because they are very stable as they are and usually later versions are larger in file size. Lets keep this release small as possible.
I'll change the calulators, icons, etc clean up the looks and games maybe.
after that I think we should be ok. What do you guys think.

I am using an installation of your wonderful 432V3 for a long time now. Even managed to have Firefox 4.0 on /mnt/home plus Flash and the latest Java and additionally the newest Thunderbird. Surely you will know how to improve things, but it performs mighty good already.

mupdf is 533kb and doesn't have a gui, I did compile that over a year ago on 4 series its on the forum somewhere But the size of it is too large, for that file size I could add Evince, last time I compiled it was 485.25 KB and it opens pdf, comic ,svg, tiff, impress ,jpg, png. But it does add an additional 200-300kb in deps, like gconf,orbit, but then I could add Gcaltool which is way better of a calculator than galculator, because it needs those deps also. Also FileRoller uses those deps.
But for now I'll have to focus on the backend first

Oh ya that mupdf from the link you posted 533kb pet on 2.14X also, just had to make a system-link on ibjpeg.so.6 to libjpeg.so.7

Another Things I thing, in long term, it is to begin to think to ipv6 support. I seen ipv6 module it is not in Puppy 4.3.1 kernel, but is is present in kernel sources

Have a look at some of the apps that don't support it, like mysql

it also says all Linux 2.6 includes a robust IPv6-enabled IPSEC stack derived from the USAGI Project IPSEC stack.
Might of been the apps you were testing.

True, but we have to remember that ttuuxxx already has a lot on his plate with 2.14x...

Also, does anybody know what happened to the 4.4 that Technosaurus was working on a while ago?

I certainly appreciate the hard work done by ttuuxxx. I have been using Puppies 4.31.1 [1] for quite some time. I use it to compile Wine. That iso is still available [2].

If the thread was actuall about Puppy 432 then im sure people would comment on it etc but its not, its about 4.3.1

So i dont know why you think people dont have their facts right as Puppy 432 isnt a fact that has anything to do with "bringing back Puppy 431. Using the same logic in your post, I could claim that people dont have their facts right because there is a newer Puppy 525 released now and ask: "Doesnt everybody realize that?"

Bringing back/ upgrading 4.3.1 upgrading it and re-releasing it is not doing the same as bringing back Puppy 432, just as it is nothing to do with bringing back any other Puppy version other than 4.3.1

ttuuxxx would you consider using this. Bigmike has his first 431 based os called Bruno pup. http://puppylinuxnews.org/puplets/bruno ... ed-on-431/ His general idea is to make it user friendly out of the box. which in the most part it is. After talking to him he would like to update it but he did say if it was going to be as much work as Sickgut says earlier in this forum then he may not do it. can you look into Bruno pup and see if that may be a good place to start.

I dont have the skills to do allot of the things needed and i know if i started this project myself i would not be able to do it properly. due to how i am. so if ttuuxxx would like to do it great. but you do what you feel is best.

exactly this is what i am asking. but i did mention about continuing on from 431 track updating it and making a new distro like the pup431-puppeee-fluppy has been doing. i wonder if the devs of fluppy could provide anything that may help with an update of 431.

My original idea was to just see if 431 could have new apps for it.

one way could be to provide an update package that has all the needed libs for updating to newer apps. that can be installed or removed as needed. without the need for the lengthly process that sickgut himself says is needed. This is done with the now far removed pup Lighthouse. they provide an addon .sfs for the bass install with all the things needed.

this would be tha simple way for any 431 based os to be updated with the newer apps.and also it would be a great way to easily update a 431 install on usb. having a 431 on usb is a great thing. works on more Computers.
