New Porteus 3.0.1 just released.Bugfix release.

Have any of you guys ever given a recent Knoppix a serious run?

The idea of a well proven, full-blown/feature-rich Debian based system with a very recent kernel (3.15.6), running - with persistence - from a USB flash drive, sounds quite intriguing. If I can come up with a thumb drive with enough capacity, I might give this new release a try... just, umm, because...

Holy cow... comes with enough default apps to make your head spin! Might be a slow, bloated mess... or maybe not. Big download, too @ ~4.2Gb.
About 2/3rds of the way there (thank you, McD's free WiFi
)...

I've just installed Simplicity 147 Desktop, which is based on Puppy Precise 5.7.1. It's mostly good (and comes complete with the secure Tor browser and Dropbox), except that so far I've been unable to get sound working on it.
(Update, 26th August; I have now got the sound working.)

I downloaded the Knoppix 7.4 dvd a week or so ago, I had it install to
a 16gb flash drive.
The flash drive has the OS plus a ten gb space to save any session
changes.
I used synaptic to update the system (708 files), took a long time to
download and install but everything is up to date now.
I used synaptic to install Cairo-dock as well.
It's working well from the flash drive so far.
Edit:I added arandr to setup for 2 monitors.

I thought I would try Linux Mint 17. A big mistake that was. It came bundled on a magazine disk with three other distros. I booted it up on my laptop in the DVD drive. All worked quite well although it did take a long time to load. I've been spoiled with Fatdog.
What I didn't realise until later that night the bloody thing had stolen almost 2G of my mobile data. What a piece of crap. I will stick with Puppy in the future.
Anyone else seen this behavior before?

For those who tried it, how did you pick the desktop environment of Salix 14.1? (KDE, Ratpoison, Xfce, Openbox, Fluxbox) Please give details, and feel free to compare the different DEs. Did you notice that, at least for Xfce, the devs changed root access from "su" to "sudo"? Am I correct that I have to install Salix because it doesn't run as a liveCD? [Edit: I just checked the Salix website, and read that one dev is in charge of liveCD architecture.] Generally, does each DE/WM have the same apps, or do apps substantially differ between DE/WMs?

I chose MATE because I prefer it. KDE is usually fairly bloated while Openbox and Fluxbox are usually lacking in bells and whistles. For me personally, XFCE is a close second to MATE it's just a matter of personal preference.
Salix live releases are generally a bit behind the install discs but I see they have both KDE and XFCE 14.1 live Beta's available now.I've tried enough of the live discs that I know what to expect so I generally just go straight to an install.

The different versions usually share some of the same apps but have different file managers,burning apps, etc. Don't keep up with all the different versions so can't go into specific detail.

There is a choice of about 15 WM/DE..... I installed MATE because I like MATE.
Probably not recommended for beginners.... if you feel the urge to try Arch I'd recommend reading over the Wiki....
