Ongoing Sound Problems

Every Precise I've tried exhibits the same behavior. Either the kernel, Alsa or Retrovol do not work with my Intel audio chip

Processor : 8x Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Audio Adapter : HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
snd_hda_intel : Intel HDA driver
snd_hda_codec : HDA codec core
snd_hwdep : Hardware dependent layer
snd_pcm_oss : PCM OSS emulation for ALSA.
snd_mixer_oss : Mixer OSS emulation for ALSA.
snd_pcm : Midlevel PCM code for ALSA.
snd_seq_dummy : ALSA sequencer MIDI-through client
snd_seq_oss : OSS-compatible sequencer module
snd_seq_midi : Advanced Linux Sound Architecture sequencer MIDI synth.
snd_seq_midi_event : MIDI byte <-> sequencer event coder
snd_rawmidi : Midlevel RawMidi code for ALSA.
snd_seq : Advanced Linux Sound Architecture sequencer.
snd_seq_device : ALSA sequencer device management
snd_timer : ALSA timer interface
shpchp : Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver
snd : Advanced Linux Sound Architecture driver for soundcards.
soundcore : Core sound module

PCI bridge : Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev c4) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])
PCI bridge : Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 5 (rev c4) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode])

When precise first boots, it does not recognize the sound chip, when I finally tick the front box in retrovol, I get sound, but not speaker icon.

Upon reboot, the settings for retrovol are not saved.

I've tried every option that alsa and retrovol offer for configuration.

What's really interesting is that Raring and Upup recognize the sound ship, the speaker icon is not muted as it is in Precise.

It seems that the "stock" precise distributions have the problem, while non-stock ones do not.

I'd rslly appreciate some help with this.

thanks

Thom

I did a fresh manual frugal install of 561 to a 16gb SDHC card.

I updated ppm and then installed firefox-21, I installed kdegames and
digikam-2.50 as well.
I used getflash to install the latest flashplayer plugin.
Once kdegames or digikam are installed you get an error if you try to
change the password for spot or root.
Digikam created a menu entry under graphics but clicking on it doesn't
launch digikam, in 5.6 I was using gexec to launch digikam but it's
not included in 5.6.1 so I made a pet of grun-0.93 and it works fine.
I fiddled with the digikam desktop file but couldn't get it to start
from the menu icon.
That's it so far.

Successfully upgraded 5.6 using a "Precise-5.6.1" CD-RW disk. :D

Had to restore my changed wallpaper, and re-do the edit of the /root/.jwmrc-tray to change the xload display.
I wonder if anything else has been reset to default?
Time will tell.

Precise 5.6

- booting FRUGAL from sda1 works, but not from sda5. It shows "puppy_precise_5.6.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console". Same happens with racy or wary 5.5.

- When booting up, modules are being loaded, need to press any keyboard key, to have it continuing (usb keyboard).

- /root/Choices/MIME-types should be instead by default /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types ?

Now that Precise is almost stable, it will be nice to have a QuickPet available for Precise pointing to Precise Pets in ibiblio.org.

pwidgets pet 2.4.1 in precise-5.6.1

G'day Sylvander,

I'm running pwidgets in a frugal precise-5.6.1 based on the 2.4.1 pet.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... =827712100

Check the final few pages of the pwidgets thread for fixes to some of the problems you are likely to come across with some widgets.

Success or not seems to depend on just which widgets you want displayed.

Precise 5.6 :
- # ayttm
** (process:21467): WARNING **: Error loading plugin: libaspell.so.15: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

- # gadmin-rsync
** (gadmin-rsync:26051): WARNING **: Couldn't find pixmap file: gadmin-rsync.png

- Why are there 2 different gtkdialog links ? /usr/bin/gtkdialog and /usr/sbin/gtkdialog

- Still those 3 big bad files :
/usr/lib/libLLVM-3.0.so.1
/usr/lib/libicudata.so.48.1.1
/usr/lib/seamonkey-2.17.1/libxul.so
Is it possible to remove the first 2 ones, and replace seamonkey with lighter software.

Precise 5.6.1 testing on K6-2 500

After reading Barry's blog post about whether Precise could replace Wary, I've had a crack at running it on my trusty K6-2 500 machine and, as I suspected I might, I'm having problems.

I'm booting from the CD, effectively pfix=ram as I haven't set anything up yet. It's getting as far as setting up the layered file system, but is throwing a kernel panic at the switch root phase. I've attached a photo of the screen. At this point it is also flashing the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights on the keyboard.

There's a link to the HardInfo report from Wary 5.5 in my sig.
