help

Thanks, Tom. I wonder how the "DOWNLOAD PUPPY 3.01Get the latest official version" can be removed from the front page. (The latest version is 4.00.) I've tried to, but can't figure it out.

Also, the URL to the old wikka ( http://puppylinux.org.wikka ) goes into the wiki archives (of the new site), so am putting the URL of the old wikka in the archive pages in case members wanted to access the old site (now renamed to http://pupweb.org/wikka ).

I wondered about that too raffy.
I created a new official release description for 4.00 in the hope it would propagate through but no joy.
For anyone getting messed about by wobbly dns queries the following entries in /etc/hosts should help whilst the name servers stablise.

Code: Select all

#uncomment one of these entries
#old site this will only work for www.puppylinux.org/wikka
#77.232.66.57 puppylinux.org

#new site
74.54.199.50 puppylinux.org

Working now!

I'd just like to say a big WELL DONE to Tom. He wasn't expecting this today and has spent all day coding like a monkey.

Yes. EXCELLENT JOB - Tom and everyone else who worked on the Puppy Website.

Its a new day for the Puppy community. Its good that the site is ready at the same time Dingo came out.

I've fixed the CSS for Internet Explorer. If anyone could have a quick look at the site in IE6 and IE7 and let me know if anything is still broken. I don't think the dashed borders show up in IE6, I'll fix that when I get the time.

Cheers

From the student to the revered Master

It is either because of the space between 'close bracket' after derivative & 'try' or the missing 'L' from 'close url'
...derivative] try this[/ur ]
Many thanks for the lesson well learned & explored :D

From Hostgator:
What could be Puppy's "sin"?

(Just noted that Puppy is 4th in 7-day tally at Distrowatch.)

Is it possible that we've had too many hits already? We always get a huge surge in hits when a new version is released.

I think it's a combination of that and not having optimised Drupal with things like caching and throttling. When we get the site back up (WhoDo doesn't seem to be replying at the moment, probably in bed -- I'm trying to see if hostgator will let me do it anyway) I'll try and see if the situation can be improved with these optimisation procedures, otherwise we may have to start thinking about how to finance a dedicated server.

Yep. 4000 attempts to download Dingo in the space of a few minutes/hours sent our CPU usage above the limit for our share of the server - we get 25% CPU load and we hit 33% pretty darn quick. Tom and I are working on a fix.

Thanks for the PM of server details, whodo. I've PM'd you back about my suggestions. Also please see this post.

Yep. Tom has the detail, and I'm sure he's working on it, but the major issue for now is that the site has been unblocked but returns an error on the userID. Maybe lost the link to the MySQL database or something. I've asked Tom to follow up and I've spoken with the Host Gator Security and Networking Admin about the issues.

1. 404 page could be a major issue
2. downloads.php has the highest thread rate
3. rss feeds on main page could be eating CPU
4. prit1's repository could also be causing headaches because it runs cron jobs to update from our mirrors.

@Whodo: The Cron job for the repo is not setup to run yet. So this cannot be an issue. But I would real like to see if the backend to the repository is adding any load. Tom will let us know whats going on.

Poor guy's been at it consistently, and finally has the site back up and running using caching and throttling. I also note the downloads>software page points to your repo of packages and that's a terrific asset too!

As long as we stay in business, I'm happy for you and Tom to beaver away behind the scenes to refine things so we don't have the problem again. Host Gator were ok, but there were LONG delays between posting questions and getting answers, which was frustrating for me but must have almost sent Tom around the twist!

I'm happy that it all seems to be working fine now. That's the main thing.

Cheers

Hi all

Sorry I've been inactive for the past few weeks (= exams).

First off, congrats to all who have worked on the site and brought it about. It's awesome!

Tom it now looks pretty good in IE7 (yes sorry folks I'm on Vista ATM).

I'll try and step up my activity and help out a bit more. Well done again.

The old wikka URL still appears in the Google search but it still displays "Page not found" error: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyLinuxMainPage

For the URL http://puppylinux.org/wikka/, there is no problem.
