With shotwell photo manager, if you rename it to shotwell, then mount it:

Code: Select all

mount -o loop shotwell ./mountpoint
then go to the contained /usr/bin directory & run ldd shotwell, it gives me:

Code: Select all

I asked you about that some time ago, at least a month, and at that time you thought that shinobar's JWM was only i18n aware, I can't be bothered looking for the post, it may have even been a PM, but I'm sure you remember

Your trinity project looks interesting.

The QuickSet changelog mentiones RTL support, that's why I brought this up.

By the way, is there any way I can set up a repo just like the lucid one? A Trinity repo could be a great idea. I got a working kdebase SFS and all KDE applications come as SFSs to make it modular and efficient. Got 5 at the moment, my focus is major applications. I can convert them to PETs easily and make a KDE repo.

Tested a few more of the portable linux apps.

Works:

Xara Extreme 0.7
Arora 0.10.1
Dropbox 0.7.110

Audacity 1.3.9
PeaZip 3.1

Doesn't work:
Fly back up manager
Gramps

Hi all

RJBrewer
In response to your problems playing you tube videos with 510 on a 800mhz box I have found the following solution.

Download and install Midori browser (it is light enough to play videos while downloading)
Download and install VLC

open /usr/local/bin
create new blank file and name it "yt2"
open file and input:
"#!/bin/bash"
"vlc /tmp/Flash*"
save file make it exicutable in properties
(this plays the cached flv file in the temp directory)

Create new desktop/taskbar icon and enter clicking the icon opens
"/usr/local/bin/yt2"

open Midori, go to you tube and play a video, as soon as it starts to play pause the video (so that it reduces load on the system, but still downloads the flv file)

Click on the desktop/taskbar icon that you created and the file shouild play in vlc, even when it is still downloading (nearly all will play full screen on my 800mhz 256mb box)
Will work with all the flash player sites that I have tried

when the video is finished or you want to turn it off make sure you close VLC so that when you choose a new video, the old video in the temp file is discarded.

I am still having the occasional browser crash, but perhaps you might be able to figure it out

still cant find a swf (flash codec) to play directly from the browser, it looks like the flash plugin is used to convert the swf file to flv.

I have not suddenly become a coding expert but got the idea from a ubuntu forum, via a google search

Hope this helps

Running live cd on a 10-year-old desktop. Had to run Xorg wizard to get right resolution. How do I know what my driver is, so that I can tell you? Also the keyboard came up as US instead of UK, so that needed sorting too.

Apart from that, seems good so far.

For graphics card you have.

type: report-video

in terminal. you will find report-video output file in /tmp open as text and copy paste to forum.

For what graphics card your system needs use the Test your graphics card in the drivers section of Quickpet

VIDEO REPORT: Lucid Puppy, version 510

Chip description:
Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 630/730 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter

Driver used by Xorg:
sis

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 16 Depth: "Display"

Ohoho! Does this mean my Nvidia driver can't work? I assume this output means I'm actually using VGA (or don't I know what I'm talking about?)

EDIT: Then did test your graphics card, and it recommended Xorg-High. So I installed that, restart X (and later reboot) and get exactly the same Video-Report result. What does it all mean??

Not sure which of my posts you are referring to.

I only meant that watching the streams on my 10yr old Inspiron 4000
were not smooth.
Watching the the downloaded videos with mplayer, vlc, or gxine
works fine.
I prefer to use Fluppy though as it lets me use the 4.xx pets that
are much smaller and less rescource hungry than the Ubunutu apps
in 5.1.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Instant Update 003 is posted in Lupu News http://www.diddywahdiddy.net/LupuNews/

Here's a quick link -> ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dist ... 10-003.pet

003 provides libjpeg7, latest index of puppy-lucid repo, enables laptop function keys for volume, brightness, etc., sets Netsurf home page, removes buggy Icewm Xtreme-ReAnimated theme, configures Sylpheed email, fixes USB bootflash, links fsck, adds Dusk IceWM theme, recovers Arabic and Hebrew fonts, fix for Quickpet, workaround for Puppy Help, links to libfaad and libx264 for xfce, browser link to Lupu News

The old Compaq I tested 510 on had SIS 530/620 graphics.....it booted to a desktop and I added Xorg_High and had some acceleration.

Hi, I have installed 5.1 (very nice - great work, everybody) but cannot get Google Chrome to work.
Hi Simes, Here is a pet of Iron. I had forgotten how much I liked it--it seems very snappy. The p2 version is not needed anymore, they say, because this version will run with p3. (That confused me too, but I hope it works.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By the way, is there any way I can set up a repo just like the lucid one?
Are these going to be sfs's Iguleder? We hope to have a one-click sfs installer built in for 5.2.

driver Id in Quickpet Report Video

#2055 Post by bigpup »

In quickpet:
the report video says the driver used by xorg: vesa

This was true before changing to a nvidia driver. See the below entries in xorg.conf.
I think using nvidia's x server settings program made these conflicting entries.
Any place else that identifies the driver being used says nvidia.

From xorg.conf

Section "Device"
Driver "vesa" #card0driver
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NV37GL [Quadro PCI-E Series]"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "Quadro PCI-E Series"
EndSection

Your thoughts regarding the comment on non-US users suggest a nerve was struck!
Yes. This will be my only comment, but I think the people who have worked so hard and contributed so much deserve a clear statement. There was one person who was rude and insulting throughout the development of Lucid Puppy 5.1. He repeatedly insulted people who did not do exactly as he said. If there was anything he had not seen before he called it "wrong." We dealt with it. The last straw was what I regard as the mischaracterization of Lucid Puppy 5.1 as somehow deficient with regards to language support when it is in fact the most language friendly Puppy ever. Choosing one's own language is one-click and choosing one's keyboard layout is equally easy. All of our users are international users and we expect them to be well-served and happy with Lucid Puppy 5.1

Apart from this one insignificant issue, our Development Forum was characterized by great respect and diversity--it was an awesome experience and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to be part of it. All of these people--130 pages in just 6 weeks. Amazing.

bigpup, 01micko knows about this for sure, but I think report-video is not always accurate and 01micko knows why and has plans to fix it.

Ok. I just wanted to make you aware that the changes made to xorg.conf, by nvidia's x server settings program, could be causing problems.

I am having problems with the clock setting, which does not seem 'sticky'. I set it to UTC, software to match hardware, and the displayed time is correct, but I have to re-set it each boot. Dont know where to look for configuration script. 5.1+update 002.

Lupu510 frugal hdd install to acer timelinex 5820tg. I have previously compiled kernel again in Fluppy004 and Fatdog64 with batched ec.c. They succeeded and I got acpi control, battery status, powertop .... working. With Lupu510 I failed four times with compiling. But the fifth time was success. Including squash filesystem and Aufs to kernel ( they were included as modules in .config file. ) was the trick. Now I can switch ati off with acpi_call (doubles battery time) and I have acpi monitoring working.

Timelinex 4820tg and 5820tg have not been linux friendly so I post my success here. BIOS/ACPI problem is not solved even with 2.6.35 kernel so manual patching is needed also in the future.

As non US keyboard user I am now very happy with Lupu and also Fluppy004. They are both userfriendly and have good selection of apps and they look good also. Keep up with development. Distrowatch ranking is pleasure to follow.
