Missing ISO updates

I have been using a frugal installed Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 for some time now and it is still my favorite. My computer didn't have a sound system until this week, so I have been operating for the last 13 years without sound.

I loaded Instant_Update-Lucid528-001, but I have not loaded any of the other updates.

Because I now have sound, I would like to find and load updates: 002, 003, 004, and 005 - if they are necessary to get puppy 528 completely up to speed.

After rereading the first message in this thread, it seems that there are no longer any "Instant Updates.

Do you have to start all over again to update? If so, how do you save your customized setup? Alternatively, do I need the missing updates? If so where can I find them?

Hi Don,

If you installed version 528.005 found on the first page of this thread - then you won't need any of the mentioned updates. Those that you mentioned, "001", "002", etc., were all made for version "528".

Version 528.005 is all of those updates combined into one, thus making for one easy download for people just starting out. :)

I hope this has helped?

Cheers/Amicalement,

Hi, Eyes-Only - Thank you for your response.

I have customized my pup 528 and I don't want to start all over again. I though that was the rational behind the updates.

I am not sure of how to load Version 528.005 and keep what I have now. I am loath to start again. I would much rather find the Instant updates.

Playdayz, the creator of this series of puppy, may have the updates that you need. He would be your best source of information. You might try sending him a pm or wait until he sees your posts and replys.

To update a frugal install there are several ways to do it.
The basic principle is to use your old save file with the install of the newer version.
Ways to update are explained here:

bigpup - Thank you very much for pointing me to your thread on updating.

It guided me through the upgrade of Puppy528 to Puppy528.005. It went without a hitch. However, when I download from http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/lupu-528.005.iso I couldn't access the site nor did I get a md5 for the iso. I really like to check the md5 on any large download.

Also, I removed Instant_Update-Lucid528-001? It was still shown in the PPM. I didn't think it was needed because 005 is all new. Please tell me if I need it and should replace it.

Again, thank you very much!

Instant_Update-Lucid528-001 not needed for Lucid Puppy 528.005. It already has the update.
(not sure if removing Instant_Update-Lucid528-001, from an updated save file, used in Lucid 528.005, would cause the stuff that is in the update, to be removed from Lucid 528.005 install?)
Do not think it would effect the programs, that come in Lucid 528.005, since it contains all the updates and they are in the main Lupu_528.sfs, that comes with Lucid 528.005.
(you just became the tester on this, so let use know if anything strange happens)

In the first post, in this topic, under each download link (as I understand) is the md5 checksum.

Yes. What Bigpup says about updating. The only thing I would add is to be ultra safe make a backup of your lupusave file before updating, and then just boot with the Lucid 5.2.8.005. There is a Hot Backup utility in Lucid but I can't remember when it was added.

BTW, People who like Lucid might also like the LXDE version of Slacko called Checkmate => http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=79810

Comment on 1st page:
Lupu 5.2.8.005 with the newer 2.6.37.6 kernel from Slacko 5.3.1 and Pmusic 2.x. It may work better on some machines. More info and download -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=70736
Three-Headed Dog 5.2.8.005 Updated ISO APR 25, 2012 - Luci-001.005
Three-Headed Dog is based on Lucid 5.2.8 but with the 2.6.37.6 kernel from Slacko 5.3.1. Some newer computers might work better with 3HD than with Lucid 5.2.8.005.
Well, it is unclear:
1/ in which case one ought NOT use Lupu 5.2.8.005, but rather Lucid 5.2.8.005? Lucid being based on an older kernel.

2/ The differences btw Lupu & 3-headed dog, viz pros & cons.

Where's the updated download link for Flash?

Thanks.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU -- there are apparently a lot of us that don't want to see this discontinued....i might go to slacko, idk, might HAVE to....but lupu has been SO easy. BUT will we be abloe to continue using deb packages with Ubuntu Lucid now at the end of its life?

Lupu and Lucid are the same thing.

3HD is Lucid with the 2.6.39 kernel from Slacko 5.3. 3HD *might* work better with some relatively newer hardware. Some people might prefer using the newer kernel just for the heck of it. In almost all cases either will work and the user will not be able to tell the difference ;-)

Update to all versions of Lucid - To install Flashplayer if needed, please update this GetFlash pet -> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=74491 Or use Google Chrome which has Flashplayer built-in http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 570#630570

When Lucid is discontinued you will probably not have access to the Ubuntu Lucid repos any more. But that is almost a year away, and all packages made from Ubuntu packages for Lucid in the Lucid repo and forum will continue to work.

Upon thinking, I should add that deb files from other/later versions of Ubuntu will still * sometimes* work, but the newer the version of Ubuntu the less likely that its packages will work on Lucid.

(a) I just recently bought a brand-new PC.
The only one of my 7 Puppies [the latest Lupu-528.005 included] that would boot on the new PC, was Slacko.
Added: Racy-5.3; Dpup-Exprimo-5.x.3.4.2.8-SCSI; FatDog64-600-Firefox.
Hence...
Slacko-5.3.3.1-SCSI is now my number-1 Puppy instead of Lupu. :(

(b) Should I stick with Slacko?
Or try 3HD?

Sylvander,

(a) "Hence" is used incorrectly?

(b) Should I stick with Slacko?
Or try 3HD?

If you don't try 3HD it's an illogical question.
If you do try 3HD, just apply your definition of "hence".

I am wondering why this computer did not boot.
What is it?
Specs please?
Details of what happens when you try to use Lucid 528.005 on it?

Sylvander, we have had along and fruitful run but IMHO you should stick with Slacko and begin to customize it to your liking and make suggestions about its future development, software you want, and puplets based on it. Thanks for all of your help with Lucid.

(a)
Mobo = ASRock H61M-S
CPU = 2x Intel Pentium G620T @2.20 Ghz
RAM = 1 stick of 4GB 1333 DDR3
HDD = 250GB SATA; ATA ST250DM000-1BD14
DVD-RW = SATA; TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH222BB
Put together by my local shop, sold for £245.

(b) Can't remember the details, but it just didn't get to the desktop.
Probably due to not having the necessary drivers in the kernel.
Would need to re-make the CD and try it, if you need the details.

Those Sandy Bridge chips had graphics problems until some of the newer kernels.
http://blogs.intel.com/technology/2011/ ... -_it_will/

Even had problems with Ubuntu 11.04
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1817374

You may just need to stick to newer kernels with better Sandy Bridge support. HTH.

Sylvander,

Thanks for the info.
The hardware target is constantly moving.
Just wondering why I can run Lucid 528.005 on a computer with this processor.
Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 3000
I am not using the processor on chip graphics.
Using Nvidia Geforce 560 GTX Ti graphics card.
I do have to start with option puppy pfix=nox and run xorgwizard, to use the vesa graphics driver. The NV driver works, but not many resolution options.
Have not tried to install the proper Nvidia driver, yet.

I think that's what I'll do.
I really liked using Lupu, but hey-ho, that's how it goes I guess.
"Onward and upward!" :D
