Update: Most old Canon printers only have 32bit drivers, but some new models also have 64bit versions. You may be able to install these in Tahr64 using candi. This is untested.

tahrpup64-6.0.5 Candi works for .deb from Canon MG2500 series.

Candi worked flawlessly in setting up my Canon MG5320 printer using MG5300 series deb packages on Puppy Precise 5.7.1 per the updated instructions on page 1. Many many thanks, rcrsn51, for your printer expertise and contributions to this forum - from one Canuck to another!

Excellent. Now that you have downloaded the DEBs, you should run candi-pet-maker and make a permanent print/scan driver PET for your model.

My Canon MG2520 All-in-one is probably quite popular due to its low cost.
To help other users and reduce confusion, I want to supply links to
direct downloads of the required tar.gz files for the mg2500 series:

I chose to download these files to /mnt/sdb1 and also extract them to
/mnt/sdb1 ... where sdb1 is a memory stick I use for backups.

I create /mnt/sdb1/canon working folder which will contain four deb files
and two scripts. The appropriate debs are copied from packages folders
created by extracting the tar.gz files. In my case, I want only the i386
debs (32 bit) and not the amd64 debs.

One script is named canon-print:
cd /mnt/sdb1/canon
candi cnijfilter-common_4.00-1_i386.deb
candi cnijfilter-mg2500series_4.00-1_i386.deb

and the other is canon-scan:
cd /mnt/sdb1/canon
candi scangearmp-common_2.20-1_i386.deb
candi scangearmp-mg2500series_2.20-1_i386.deb

Of course candi.pet must have first been installed, and cups must
now be used to actually install the printer. If all is well, 2500 series
will appear at the top of the list, and should be selected.

The reason I keep separate print-scan scripts is that there are situations
where I only need to install the scanner (the printer driver in the pup works
but not scanning). This happened with Tahrpup.

So far, I've installed print & scan on Slacko 5.7 and 6.3.2. plus Precise
5.7.1.

Xenial 7.04 has working drivers included. In this case, installing
Canon's scan driver adds a extra scan app..

I'm not sure this is the right place to post my question. If not, my apologies, and please suggest a more appropriate area in the forum.

I'm trying to get CD/DVD printing working correctly on a veteran Canon Pixma IP5000.

Canon never published a Linux driver for this printer. However, it's supported by Gutenprint -- or at least that's what CUPS and Gutenprint claim.

However, though Gutenprint 5.2.8pre1 in Precise 5.7.1 prints fine on paper, it won't print at all on CDs/DVDs.

Gutenprint 5.2.5 in Lucid *will* print on a CD-R, but it has a problem.

It leaves a "hole" in the image, in the middle of the CD. (Gutenprint 5.2.8pre1 also leaves the "hole" when it prints my CD image on plain paper.)

Gutenprint leaves a blank circle about 4.2cm (1.6") in diameter. That would be OK for a non-hub-printable CD-R blank, but who uses those any more? My blank stock on hand (hundreds of discs) is all hub-printable, and that naked white circle in the middle of a printed disc looks really goofy.

It seems to me that this has to be deliberate area masking somewhere in the guts of the Gutenprint driver. I'm pretty sure it's not in the printer itself, because when I print to it from Gimp on a Windows machine, I can print right up to (even over) the hub.

So my question is, how can I disable Gutenprint's CD/DVD hub masking, so I can print on the ENTIRE SURFACE of a hub-printable CD/DVD with my Canon IP5000?

I'll appreciate any ideas that anyone might have.

In a different thread you requested my inputs. However, just two posts up
you can see that I posted my basic methods and experiences. Since then,
I've duplicated my scripts for 64 bit pups using candi-1.0-noarch-1.txz
from the fatdog 710 packages ... and, of course, 64 bit debs. This works
on 64 bit tahrpup, xenial and fatdog 710. I've used the 32 bit scripts on
tahrpup, xenialpup, wheezy, precise, slacko 5.5 and slacko 6. The 64
bit scripts do not work on slackopup64.

Your 64 bit inkgui did not work on fatdog 710. It installed and a inkgui.
desktop was created, but clicking on it had no effect. The libs I install for
use in a terminal method (no gui) were taken from fatdog contrib
packages 710. They work on fatdog, xenialpup and tahrpup. They are:

ink-o.52-x86_64-1.txz
libinklevel-0.9.2-x86_64-1.txz
libieee1284-0.2.11-x86_64-1.txz

As you can see from above, I found Candi to be perfect under Tahrpup.

But I've upgraded to xenial and either I'm missing something very obvious (quite possible), or canon have changed something that ran ok under Tahrpup.

Following the excellent instructions above, this is what happens :-

Only one driver appears for 32bit Linux Pixma MG5750, namely cnijfilter2-5.20-1.deb.tar.gz

The file downloads as cnijfilter2-5.20-1.deb.tar.gz and unpacking it results in a directory called cnijfilter2-5.20-1-deb.

4. Open a terminal where the files are located and run:
candi cnijfilter-common_3.30-1_i386.deb

Which, in my case should be : candi cnijfilter2-5.20-1-deb, which results in
'Not a valid archive file'.

Perhaps candi sees this as a dir and not a file?

I've also notice that this particular driver doesnt extract to a .deb, but to a -deb.

Trying the method with candi-pet-maker gives

'failed to read archive *.deb'

However, renaming the -deb to a .deb gives:

'Error reading magic version number....is a directory'.

Please tell me where I've gone wrong and how to rectify it

The .deb driver file is in a subfolder of the directory cnijfilter2-5.20-1-deb.

If you ran candi-pet-maker back in August, you would have a ready-to-go installer PET to use here in Xenial.

5. Copy it to a safe location for the next time you need to install the printer.

After the embarrassing disaster of not pointing candi to the .deb file in /packages, I've managed to create the .pet file and install it correctly. However...

No matter what I did, cups would not see the printer - but did give me a lovely error -:

"Directory "/usr/lib/cups/filter" has insecure permissions (040777/uid=0/gid=0)"

A bit of googling later, resulted in a working printer !!

I achived this by :-

* changing the permissions * Turning off the firewall
* Restarting cups
* Removing all printers
* Restarting cups
* Adding a new printer in cups

Only then did cups show the printer

Hope this helps others

That's good news.

But I checked Xenial and the permissions are correct out-of-the-box (755).

I don't know how they would have accidentally been changed to 4777.

I found it necessary to reinstall Xenialpup 7.5 64 bit on my aging desktop today. I downloaded the printer drivers for my Canon TS-3122 pixma printer from Cannons website as I had done for the previous installation. Unfortunately I did not save a copy of the Candi tool. I need it to get a working install on my Canon printer.

I did extract the debian package from the compressed file system and install it. CUPs does find the printer and offer up the correct printer driver during the setup process however the print jobs fail with message for error "filter failure".

That candi tool would be real handy to have right now.

Found it! It resides on archive.org in a collection of a forum posted *.pet packages.

Printer works fine now.
