One more example of how community members throw shade on another project without providing any supporting evidence.

@plinej - that's a marvellous thing about Puppy - so much choice - I personally use ScPups, but look with interest at many offerings.

Hi Jason,
That's right, no pup_save file.

I'm running 2.2.12, clicked on "petget" and installed abiword and it's deps -- one interesting thing, it missed one dep, 'libprotobuf17', that I had to install separately.

Anyway, the menu updated, found abiword entry in the "Documents" category.
Also was able to start it from a terminal.

Barry, can you rebuild gtkdialog with libvte support? Some of my applications require that i.e. fftag...

I also wrote pdvdrip to replace pdvdrsab which would allow you to get rid of dvdauthor and vamps. I have some update ideas that I will be doing soon for this program.

@BarryK

Most of your 'extra packages' you've removed all seem to relate to direct mobile connection for a laptop, in most cases needed for an ios phone, there's also geolocating and storing locally a phone number as android and ios do.

Or did you by any chance at some stage consider a laptop with an inbuilt wwan system and what it would need to have for a full system, and they are just leftovers?

ps and libgadu was for Poland's gadu-gadu IM service.

I don't recall what they were installed for. However, none of the packages in the current build need them, so no point in having them in the build.

Does anyone have a wifi printer that they can test with Easy 2.2.12?

John O. reported by email that his HP printer (HP Officejet Pro 6968 AIO) is not recognised. He mentioned that it is recognised in Fatdog and a recent official pup.

I sent him an email reply yesterday, asking if he had looked at rcrsn51's guidelines for setting up a printer:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=59015

What occurs to me from looking at those points, is the firewall may be the culprit. In Easy, if you change the permissions on /etc/init.d/rc.firewall, remove all execute permissions, then reboot, That will eliminate the firewall as possible cause of the non-recognition.

If still no joy, follow rcrsn51's instructions. Point 5a is to run PeasyPort, which Easy has, see the menu "Network" category.

if you want to run Chromium web browser, the version 79 in the Debian repository is broken. See my blog post:

https://bkhome.org/news/202003/chromium ... roken.html

We will have to wait until Debian release version 80. In the meantime, the version 73 SFS works fine.

Before installing my printer drivers, I had to create a directory that for some reason couldn't be created with dpkg.

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /var/spool/lpd
I downloaded the printer drivers from Brother's website and followed the install instructions. I then had to modify my connection address in the CUPS web interface to:

Code: Select all

ipp://192.168.1.78
Of course you'll need to enter your printer's IP address and not mine.

WiFi printing seems to work fine for me.

Did you disable the firewall?

@BarryK, yes firewall is disabled although not sure if that matters.

@rcrsn51, not trying to throw shade on any other project. It’s hard to track down why my system would just crash maybe once a week but Ubuntu would run stable. I don’t feel like trying to figure out why when there are so many other options to try. I like the BionicPup project but the current version seems not to like my laptop. Not trying to offend anyone here...

Printing on Brother DCPL2520DW works, although, I can only print a test page wirelessly so far.
Libre and Geany only offers "print to file" and does not print to wireless printer.
I'm using "ipp everywhere".

Had firewall on and off and uninstalled during the testing.
Printed test page with firewall on AND off.

I used firewall-status.sh found here /usr/local/PupControl/firewall-status.sh (handy if you need testing with/without firewall).

I am going to use Brother mobile (iPrint&Scan) to print mostly. I'm not a printer user per se so excuse my lack of knowledge in this application.

https://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linu ... edirect=on

Lots more to read about this.

Best,
Eric

EDIT: Printing now works in Libre and Geany. I just needed to make a few tweaks with sharing as in "sharing local printer" over wi-fi. Sorry for my mistake.

@Caneri
>I'm using "ipp everywhere"
You may not know,, this is "airprint", bonjour/avahi
You may notice that the ppd is a bit "feeble"
I don't think it will work without avahi running
airprint is mostly for arm, there are no arm filter drivers,
the driver is in the printers rom (apple raster)
Debian has 2-3 pages on their wiki about airprint/driverless
Really better to get deb from Brothers website,
more "full-featured" printing
There are 2 debs (lpr, cups), and another for scanning
Once they are installed, cups will have your specific model,
and use "right" filter driver

I have got some catching up to do, with some of the posts in this thread. plinej has posted many new and upgraded packages, and esmourguit has some new fr translations.

The last couple of days, I have been sitting staring at my new computer as it copies files from old hard drives onto the new 8TB drive. Copying via USB, and yes, takes a couple of days to copy multiple terabytes.

Here is the post about the new PC:

https://bkhome.org/news/202003/mke2fs-c ... -size.html

And there is a report about 'mkfs.ext4' creating an inappropriate block size. The problem is reported here, with instruction to fix:

Hello BarryK,

that tip about using masking tape for labels on usb drives is so simple it's genius.

talk about being right there all the time right in front me!

reading that in the blog is like finding a nugget of gold in a rushing stream by chance.

some how made my day...thanks for the common sense Barry.
