You should take macpup 528 for a spin.... And yes the clock is sitting on a shelf. You can take it off the shelf and put it on the desktop and move it around anywhere. I keep it on a shelf so if someone wants the clock on only one desktop they can adjust the shelf settings to do that. If it is on the desktop it's on all desktops.

lots of other cool info here:

Hi runtt21 !

Have to confirm problems with firefox 8.
While loading new web sites firefox 8 is freezing. No time, not willing to search for reason. Googled for "firefox 8 freezes" couldn`t find anything.
For me unusable . Went back to firefox 7.

HI everybody !

I am using firefox 7 in macpup528 .
There is one thing disturbing me a lot .
If i am scrolling and switching fast through websites ,sometimes mouse freezes
i am not able to restart xorg because keyboard does not respond .
Also cannot shutdown normally. i have to unplug my power supply to shutdown. Quite annoying. Dont know if this is Macpup-firefox specific.

Anybody else experienced it ?
What to do ?

Thank you for the article !! :D I love Fedora. I got my start in linux with fedora 7. I had beryl and everything.I still have the live cd for it somewhere.

LOL , way back then.....
fedora 13 was tough for a newcomer to linux. i couldn't get my printer running, it had a few annoying screen bugs, vlc and open office were in greek characters, and so on... i like macpup and ubuntu 10.04. E17 looks great. i like simplicity. i DON'T like the "unity" interface at all, nor gnome 3. i'm sticking with macpup and ubu 10.04.3 on different machines. enlightenment is so simple and elegant, i'm not sure why it hasn't caught on. that's the opinion of a 1-year linux user and convert.

thanks for the links, i bookmarked them. i'm into learning everything solo now so i bought a python book to learn programming. after careful consideration, i figured py was the best choice to learn first. i'm using beginning python using 3.1 and 2.6 by payne. great book, in my opinion. i checked the pdf first, before ordering. the author DESERVES the money, i think, so i purchased that sucker.

programming/linux is my new hobby.

cheers.

actually, what i need is to find a community where i can get programming ideas and help. it's always best to have a mentor-type relationship in order to learn something.

For anyone who has problems with Firefox after the update to firefox 8 beta , I have uploaded a Firefox-7.0.1.pet to the macpup 528 folder on my macpup page. Just download the .pet ,then close Firefox first and then install the new.pet. It is the official release version of 7.0.1 not the beta.

Dean there are lots of good coders on this forum.

i
I happily expolre the new macpup 528. and enjoy the nice and avanced proprietis. but is not yet sable enoug for me.

The maiin think is some FF problem.
It was crashing sometimes, sometimes took a lot of time to start.....
I did not realize in the beghinng why.
I play ad set ap some peralizations- very nice!

Finally I come back to FF and realize that it updates iteslf, and become today V 8 beta, in this update olso requires a spacial flash player, that we don't have in puppy repositories.

FF does not work animoare well. It get stack on meny pages, and I heve to kill him.

You can understend my dispere! I thin I have to restart a new pup save and loose oll my configurations! and now I come back to this fucking windows 7. (window 7 ansk me now to update and rebbot -normal antivirus update).

-------------

Other staff that i test on my new pc Asus 1215p.
Broadcom wifi pack - as suggested in a post - i sucsessfully insall the pach for puppy 5xxx.

Touch pad configuration -very nice.

insalling SFS :
open office .work
Libre office -not working
jimp -ok

programs. i try to installi few of them,
one of them is Audacity - and at the end of the dawnload it report that was unable to insall it.

Portable linux apps - I like very much that puppy 5 now is compatible for that. I downolad Audacity and it works.

I like wery much you pacpup, is nice that become updatable - like puppy 5 . let see if I will go for an old and satable version, or make an affort to be helped to fix some little and annoyng problems.

This post is basicaly for suggest:
-not allow auto update firefox !

All the rest is a shearign.

Theres a wealth of programming knowledge right here on the puppy forums - and from my own experiences folks are always more than willing to help and advise 8)
A good place to start is the programming forum http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=46

FF 7 does not close

#251 Post by firak »

FF 7 does not close
Sometimes ff does not close properly
This pend when i visit soffisticated ewbsites, like news, I guess is a flash problem.
I cannot restart FF until i kill it with pocess.
It is ounly my problem? I didd somting wrong?
I install ff7 from macpup -as suggested
I find out that flash is not there.
so with puppy pakege manger - i install flash 10
this can be the problem?
I also add few addons of ff (blank your screen + tab scope) - this can be the reason of this problem?

I ìm very happy to use this mac inteface, that is very clean and easy!
E17 Is very different from other iterfaces, E17 is itellignet, an is amezing easy when you open many windows.
Is it possible to make asurcat in ibar -that will open again all the windows minimized ( - )? (sow-hide oll the windows)

Thaks puppy developers!

An other issue:
I try to cange to jwm, from the shutdown men, it does not work on my screen. it hangs blank screen withthe cursor blinking. I heve to turn off the swich of the pc to shutdon. Actually is not very needed jwm. But i will apreciate to heve this option .

That sounds like a driver issue.I suggest using vesa, I run that all the time.
asurcat in ibar -that will open again all the windows minimized
You need to install the extra-modules.pet and use deskshow.
Sometimes ff does not close properly
open a terminal and run

Code: Select all

   killall firefox
See this for more info about that :

Thaks ttmen and Runtt21. Most of your suggestions is usfool to me.
1- the FF 7 - I create a script and link it inside the iBar. and relax.
2- deskshow works
3-
it hangs blank screen withthe cursor blinking
whike cenging to jwm - I did non succeed yet. but is marginal.

How to change xorg to vice versa when I have oready cofigured pup save?
I try from rerminal :
xorgwizard -cr return cr-return , chose vice versa, this is the ounly method?
I have some problem with that. I will try again.

ciao ciao, grazie of your support

Shutdown/Restart WITHOUT saving to the personal file

#259 Post by night_mare007 »

Hi,
I always wanted to resolve the problem of how Shutdown/Restart WITHOUT saving to the personal file ( in conjunction with disabled auto-save feature )
I found that many ppl talked about it under many threads, but non made any GUI changes to support it !

So thanks to the info I got from THIS POST, I made changes to the "Shutdown" screen as you can see below, so now:
  • BLUE Restart & Shutdown perform SAVE to the personal file - As did before.
Purple Restart & Shutdown ( Don't save ) Does NOT perform the save, and just execute the restart or shurdown.
GREEN "Save, Now !", Save the current session
( just like when you press the "save" button at JWM desktop )
NOTE: I tested it under Macpup v5.28, as FRUGAL install using FLASHCARD !
I don't know if other install methods will accept this.

NOTE 2: If you want to DISABLE the auto-save session feature ( at default is 30min ) Just do:
"Go to "Menu->System->Puppy Event Manager->save session->save Interval", and set the value to zero [actually 0] minutes, and OK that"

NOTE3: I made the changes just to the shutdown screen at E17 desktop.
You can edit /usr/sbin/plogoutJWM with my code, so you'll have the same at JWM desktop.

"plogoutE" under /usr/sbin/
"no_save_shutdown" and "no_save_restart" under /usr/bin/

Your .zip has plogout not plogoutE .

I don't think that running busybox poweroff without shutting down X and unmounting all the drives first is a good idea. Do you boot with fsck ? If so how long does it run at boot up after a no save shutdown?
