Saluki The Great

#2601 Post by l2ulinux »

Boot-up and running no problem so far.
Added Firefox and Seamonkey. Install Flash, gnome mplayer and gecko plugins.
The only thing so far that needs help is the volume is very low after setting to 100%.

as screen was recently mentioned i've compiled screen an tmux in/for saluki.

tmux is compiled statically against libevent.

EDIT: Also compiled dvtm, a tiling windowmanager for cli.

This may not be the right place to ask this question, but, I'll give it a run.

Pemasu in conjunction with 01Micko produced both an SFS and a PET for LibreOffice 3.5 (LO35)

Pemasu added a useful twist with "right-click" for LO35.

The Saluki does NOT have a LO35 PET, but it does have LO35 SFS. Does that SFS have Pemasu's enhancements built-in?

If not, is there a chance, before release, we could see an LO35 with enhancements in the Saluki PPM list?

Not urgent.

ACPID is great ! thank you . Only tested the lid so far but works without issues . It is a joy looking in the code ! This is really missing on older regular Puppies . I googled for busybox acpid because the event code needs a second keyword and have not found an understandable syntax . I also would acpitool do everything, but echo 'disk'> /sys/power/state does it on my desktop so far . Will try to map the 'Fn Zz' key to sleep.sh and powerbutton to a hibernate.sh (eee1005) . Am missing acpid_listen binary a little bit for that .
( 21:07:44 up 20:46, load average: 0.00, 0.04, 0.10)

What i found missing : scons wants python !
(actually can't remember scons)

xfce4-taskmanager missing when hitting 'Fn F9' (claimed by xfce4 wm ?) .

thunar-volman missing (think for size) .

*
Still hacking on pgprs-setup : found AT+CPIN="PUK,PIN" does not work, but AT+CPIN=PUK,PIN ;so needs some adjustments on sed etc ...

(btw does anyone knows where to get the source for modem-stats binary ? Turns out it is one of the best 3G modem tools i encountered so far)

*
sfs load on the fly loaded the devx ,
missing man binary a little bit : missing for size ? (actually hacking pman to display onboard manpages called with /path/to/manpage.1) .

Python and perl are not in the devx because the dependency checker in the ppm assumes they are installed whether or not the devx is loaded. Just install them from the repo.

Acpi_listen is there, but you won't need it. Just edit /etc/acpi/events/power.

Yes xfce-taskmanager should be changed to lxtask in sven. Will do.

Thunar-volman is missing because it doesn't work. It sees drives added but thinks they are all unintelligible. Maybe the next release will be better. Desktop icons can be added from the control panel.

Man can be emulated with

Code: Select all

cat <manpage> |nroff -man |less -R

But it doesn't work with the busybox less, so you'll need the real less or use more instead.

Adding "open with" items is so easy to do with Thunar, there's no need for anything special.

SRC2PKG

#2607 Post by gcmartin »

Well, I was wrong about the version for LibreOfiice. The Saluki SFS site ONLY has version 3.4.5,; not the current 3.5. (I misread the version number)

On another note,I have a question
I seem to rembember that I saw somewhere that @Jemimah is a user of SRC2PKG. When the SRC2PKG is selected during Custom Build, will the builder detect the need for the Saluki DEVX and download it?
Thanks in advance

019 on a frugal install. Only issue was Abiword aborting while doing a cntrl-v; I re-ran it and then chose ‘paste’ from the context menu with the same result. So I rebooted, and I couldn’t duplicate it thereafter.

Flash with Midori works well with the flash_player_11_linux.i386.pet. I know you don’t advise using Midori as our main browser for the time being, but it is starting to grow on me. It seems snappy, although it does abort from time to time when closing a tab.

I absolutely love the new wallpapers that are included with 019. They certainly add a touch of class.

Sound works well, and Frisbee connected with no issues to my wi-fi.

Here's some of the specs from my system...

While testing, I installed the Lincity-NG pet. It failed to download the physfs-2.0.2-i486.pet even though it’s in the pet specs. After manually installing the physfs pet it fired right up. Choosing ‘New Game’ and starting with an empty board or a random village works alright, but if you immediately go to ‘Start’ from ‘New Game’ it gets a Segmentation fault. Looks like a nice game, though. Good graphics.

I started Midori from the terminal to see what kind of output I’d get.

these two come up quite frequently...

Upgrade from 018 to 019:

Amazing... everything went smooth as silk!

All installed packages and files remained intact and all functioned as they should... (even pwidgets survived and is still working very well.)

Unless something major appears by someone, I'd say Saluki is ready for final release! and YES it should be made available to the public somehow if not selected as Puppy 6 it's just to unique a Puppy to 'die in the forum.'

Extremely nice job on your part jemimah!

"Congratulations."

For what it's worth, still have no Wget or ping unless I add the "-4" parameter.
Wasn't that not beeing discussed in the wary/racy threads ?
Might be related to saluki woof based on 5.2 not 5.3 .

It is a pain to catch up and being in sync with woof, changing entries manually :D (typos and so on) .

*

YEP, i managed to resume to disk Running in PUPMODE=12 .

The grub kernel line was altered manually in the grub shell
FROM
title Saluki 19 frugal
root (hd1,5)
kernel /Saluki_19/vmlinuz pdev1=sda6 psubdir=Saluki_19
initrd /Saluki_19/initrd.gz
TO
title Saluki 19 frugal
root (hd1,5)
kernel /Saluki_19/vmlinuz resume=/dev/sda5 pdev1=sda6 psubdir=Saluki_19
initrd /Saluki_19/initrd.gz

and worked out of the box .
Seems the kernel ignores the initrd.gz and rc.sysinit .
Will have to clean up my hibernate.sh .

*
Found acpi_listen , don't know why i mentioned that  .

In fact, sven manages many Fn F# hotkeys .

Was not able to get "Fn F3" , "Fn F7" and the metallic touchpad key being recognized by xev until now, probably missing the feature in the xorg driver. The whole i915 .ko modules are loaded and evdev.ko; Xorg.0.log : {Unloading vesa intel(0): [DRI2] Setup complete synaptics: Synaptics Mouse: touchpad found Using input driver 'kbd' for 'Keyboard0' Option "Protocol" "standard" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "pc102" Option "XkbLayout" "de" } .

*
The xfce4 keyboard changer needs a little bit of development as it seems, could somehow not give me an " eliminate dead keys " keyboard . Copied XkbConfigurationManager by Dougal from the Racy 5.3 simple full installation, and it worked . XkbConfigurationManager is installed 62KB .

*
Found the Setting to enable Drive Icons on Desktop; interestingly killall pup_event_frontend_d seems to work without leaving any <defunct>s . Will investigate this .

My code to stop pup_event_frontend_d would look like :

Code: Select all

echo 'pup_event_fronend_d stop' >/tmp/wmexitmode.txt
while [ "`pidof pup_event_fronend_d`" ];do sleep 6;((c++));[ $c = 3 ] && break;done
rm /tmp/wmexitmode.txt
exec /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d
*
Some remains for old ROX-Filer in xerrs.log:

grep: /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin: No such file or directory
grep: /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin: No such file or directory
grep: /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin: No such file or directory
/sbin/clean_desk_icons: line 69: /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin: No such file or directory
/sbin/clean_desk_icons: line 70: /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin: No such file or directory
/sbin/clean_desk_icons: line 71: /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin: No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `/root/Desktop/drive_*': No such file or directory

Nothing to worry about .

*
One unnecessary thought of me would be to put as many .hidden touch marker files out of /root top level and into something like /root/.config/ or /root/Choices/ .

Me too in pupmode 12 .

ping and ping6 are symlinks to busybox .

Could imagine that some packages install full ping into the system or export an ENV_ENVIRONMENTAL_VARIABLE, which a short google search could not reveal for me .

Saluki browser issues

#2616 Post by einar »

I am and my brother are running saluki 19 and we have a problem with the chrome sfs. On both test machines the chrome....sfs is gets a fatal failed to mount..... has the wrong permissions.

Would be nice to have Chrome back :)

Second he wants to play internet TV that uses MS silverlight. I know there is a moonlight counterpart for linux. you can get a plugin for Firefox in Saluki. A Saluki program named Slimp starts and it will not work.

Third and this is plea :) It would be nice since we are closing in on the release to have a working Ati/AMD driver pet/sfs. I would make one myself I could. and btw Thank you Billtoo and Pemasu for the Nvidia Pet/SFS.

And on a side note i have now tested Synergy / quicksynergy. Its Awesome. Im using a Saluki 18 test machine at home to controll 2 win7 laptops. it works quick an flawless

Re -4. Has nothing to do with saluki but everything to do with your internet connection and proxys and servers beyond your control. Just get into the habit of putting it in there and be done with it.

Solution to the no ping or Wget bug by BarryK here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 098#616098
Another bug bites the dust!

"ping -4" doesn't seem to do any harm. Hopefully no one will report that it messes things up for them.

I have put the -4 option for ping into these scripts:
Pudd, check_internet, video_upgrade_wizard.

This has already been fixed in the relavant scripts. Won't help you from the command line though.
