puppy version 1.1.4
icewm version 1.2.28

when i drag things around in my other themes, all I see is an outline. I don't see the contents of the window. So in this theme I don't have an outline so I have to guess about where I'm placing the window.

I've changed quite a few of the options in icewm, so that may be why you see the contents of the window and I only see the outline.

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the themes, I think I like the red one best.

Hope this clears up everything.

Guesttoo has posted and upgrade for Icewm to 1.2.30 - I don' t know if that will make any difference but it's worth a try. The themes were created on Puppy 2.14 so I don't really have any way of testing to see whether it's just a configuration issue with preferences file. Sorry.

Hope that helps

where did he post that version? I looked at the wiki dotpups and the ones at puppyfiles.org/dotpupsde/dotpups but I was unable to find it.

I tried updating icewm to 1.2.30 but it made my icewm unable to start up. But i did figure out that if I set moveopaque back to 1, it would show the contents of the window while I moved it. I think I prefer just the outline but this will work fine. Thanks for all the help.

Icewm should start

i compressed the Icewm 1.2.30 files with upx ... if your zlib libraries are not working properly, that would prevent a upx'ed program from starting

Vista black theme

Where is the better Vista Black theme?
wasn't it the one Whodo worked on?
Could a link be posted to it in the icewm wiki the one there now is the older one from Sbaguz without the menu improvements. I think I had a copy of it around but it must have gotten deleted.

maybe a separate area in the forum shoud be made for themes so that the there is less my themes is better than yours going on and more progress made toward makeing the themes better. IMHO the Vista Black theme as good as it is (it is my favorite) could use improvement.

Particularly with making the writing on the menus and taskbar (including the clock) less "spidery"... needs to be not exactly bold, but certainly more readable.

White on black should provide excellent contrast even for spectacle wearers, but in this instance it is extremely poor

icewm themes

Hi Folks,

Got 215CE downloaded on a dialup line (8+hours) and he installed fine
your new desktop looks great. Then I noticed that my older icewm themes didn't look right. I found that the 215CE versions taskbar was about 30% taller than taskbars in earlier icewm versions.

How do I reduce the taskbar height back to the smaller size.

Thanks,

KJ

KJ,

I believe the height of the taskbar is determined by the height of the start button. So you just have to change that to get it to change.

First use Menu>Desktop>Icewm Configuration Utility to ensure that taskbar double height is off. Then use a graphics program to change the height of the start button. The button lives in /root/.icewm/themes/{themename}/taskbar and it is 32px by default. 24px would be more like the normal height taskbar.

Hope that helps.

Thanks to WhoDo and Bostonvaulter for quick responses. WhoDo ... I followed your directions with no sucess. Using mtPaint I changed to size of the active start menu .xpm in Velvet-Azul (icewm.xpm) to 12 X 24 (saved the file and restarted icewm) and the taskbar start button got shorter in length but no change in height. I then doubled the normal size of the .xpm and again the length changed but not the height. I also tried the same process with the icewm.xpm in .icewm/taskbar with no sucess. I then changed line 230 of the .icewm preferences file to '0' and removed the start menu button from the taskbar ..... no start button .... but no change to the taskbar height.

A month or so ago, I ran a dotpup icewm 2.8 to 3.0 upgrade on a Puppy 213 system and the taskbar didn't change height.

Taskbar height

Found the answer to my taskbar height problem while reading the icewm-ultra topic pages. It was in the root/.icewm/prefoveride file. Renamed the prefoveride file (will play with it later) and the icewm taskbar in now the same height that it is in other Puppy versions. Didn't notice that file had been added before today. One more step in the learning curve. Thanks folks.

That is where you can change the text style (bold, italic, italic and bold etc) for a range of variables common to all themes. Useful for poor contrast foreground/background colours like several of the taskbar variants. Didn't realise that the icon was configured there, nor the taskbar height though. Learn something new every day, lol :) :D

Personally I like the larger default height in JWM and KDE on high resolution desktops - and the latter is very easily adjusted in the Control Panel. The taskbar isn't fdjustable on MS Windows either. Perhaps larger height equates to those who need specs? I find icewm height is far too small for my eyesight. Perhaps that's why I have difficulty with the lack of contrast between foreground/background on the new themes.

Richard.
