" I think we need to be thinking about another host.
That's just rubbish, to kill the site without warning like that;
not once but twice! Evil or Very Mad "

You would have to wonder.
Whirlpool use Bulletproof.
Probably way too costly.

http://www.bulletproof.net.au/

Bad enough that the forum goes down regularly.
This is not a jab on the nose at John Murga.
Just pure frustration.

But with Puppy gaining traction it is a real turn off
for first timers.....Puppy is now Number 9 at Distrowatch...
even before final release of Puppy 4.2.

Chris.

Hi there.

I was wondering if I could get permission to edit:

http://www.puppylinux.org/localization/espanol

Or maybe I can post a wiki page and the someone can edit that?

That'd be easier. I have some php skills and if I can help/gather enough energy I will. :)

Always so lazy :P

cpu usage issue

Posted: Wed 18 Mar 2009, 06:26
by raffy
The issue has been CPU usage, and the use of static pages for frequently accessed pages can help. This will be done soon.

Our stats at puppylinux.org are 11,500 hits daily and 180 GB transfer per month.

If you want to assume editor role, just PM me or whodo with your username in drupal.

On the News item and other pages
I would like to click on the add image icon and upload or use an image
. . . but it is not working? Anyone know why?

My feeling is the comments section on the front page is a good way of keeping a changing page :)

The wiki index is much more useful with search
and latest posts are available to check what is happening

Spam in comments

Comments section is a good way of keeping a changing page. (I assume we want this as bait for googlebots?) Unfortunately you can end up with a page full of spam until the mods delete it from the main forum.

(Maybe I am mistaken here, are the comments just scraped form the main forum or are they from a separate comments section?)

I can't see a simple solution to that, maybe an automatic time-delay of some sort so that the spam never gets through to the website frontpage?

Recently we have had some spam from Eastern Europe. Please keep an eye out for it. Could be on the comments section of wiki pages were I found some . . . May be bots, may be hackers . . .

Have just recently deleted 4/5 spam postings, as I'd tried before but for some reason couldn't edit
I did report it in the forum spam thread, but no-one took any action, so I went at it again

Hi.
I wouldn't add too much dinamic content in the main page, specially with CPU usage problems.

Sorry :P

Code: Select all

You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Seems to be down?
HostGator took us down AGAIN for high CPU usage! What th'!! They claimed it was because of 50 simultaneous accesses to the main page! I think we need to be thinking about another host. That's just rubbish, to kill the site without warning like that; not once but twice!

Anyway, I made some changes to caching, etc and that seemed to satisfy them for the moment so it should be back now.
Could we consider using TuxFamily as a host?

What is happening?

Also I recently got a personal message from someone wanting to edit the wiki
I suggest they register
Still could not edit
I suggest they get permissions from Raffy
They get permissions
Still can not edit and send me stuff to edit

Is this a wiki or Fort Knox? :?
Anyone else want to edit the wiki and unable to?

I blame the spammers . . . :P

Hello,
This is a courtesy notice to inform you that the following directory has been temporarily disabled due to excessive resource usage:
/home/whodo/public_html
As you can see above and below, the directory in question contains at least one script which was using more than the 25% CPU usage allocated to your account as per our terms of service. Because we were unable to identify the script (It was defunct in the process listing), we had no choice but to disable your entire public_html directory. Exact statistics are below:

You will need to optimize your site for a PHPSuExec native environment in order to mitigate this issue.

Please provide us with your IP address in your reply to this message so that we can unlock the file for development access to ensure that this will not happen again. You can obtain your IP address at http://hostgator.com/ip.shtml

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation.

As you can see there were only 4 processes running at the time. That is nowhere near good enough IMHO. I believe we should be looking for another host with more concern for its users than HostGator has displayed.

I have emailed our website admin (Prit) and raffy who both have access to the admin level of puppylinux.org for maintenance. In the meantime please be patient.

I don't know much about this but what about Internode? They seem at least to be Linux friendly with their mirroring of Ibiblio.

I'm sure they host, and they are fast.

Just my 2c.

simple for now

It's back to simple website for now, at least until the difficult recurring error at the site is solved. It will take some time.

Darreljon is making available a wikibook:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42755
It must be good to have the translations there, too.

There was plenty of warning: it's in HostGator's TOS.
...the directory in question contains at least one script which was using more than the 25% CPU usage allocated to your account as per our terms of service.
I note the HostGator plan is called "Baby Croc." Now without investigating, I can only deduce that this is a lower tier plan. Sometimes in the interest of saving money we short change ourselves, which I suspect is the case here.

Linode offers both robust hardware and excellent plans. Just don't expect visiting their site to be like a visit to the Family Dollar store.

I'm on freenode IRC right now and have freenode.net up on a browser.
