I have created a update of LazY-FReD - now 2.0.0.

The GUI is now much smaller and it searches now for some more file types.

It searches now e.g. also for .exe (for provided Puppy Win-Installer files) and an editable list gives option to increase file types to search for.

Version 2.0.0 is now uploaded to the first post of this thread (older version is still available).

Hi RSH:

In your next update, would you consider expanding the size of the "Activated Server Address" box in order to see the full address. It appears some addresses are quite long, so they don't fit in your drop down box.

I tried using AFI but it looks as if it is not intended for my intended usage - what I did was I booted from a live CD (no savefile), ran AFI, entered the intended Puppy name, typed the path to access an iso from my hard drive, clicked grub4dos and usb then clicked ok. I expected to see a message asking which usb drive I wanted to install to but this did not happen.

Instead I saw a message that said something like:
"Directory created"

then a message like:
"Something added to something /mnt/sr0"

I could not find any new directory created anywhere, and the CD drive did not appear to be mounted (and in any case i am hoping it would not try to write to my CD...)

Is AFI intended to allow a frugal install from an iso on hard drive to a blank (straight from shop) usb stick, controlled by a puppy running in RAM?

One other question - would it be possible to add a browse function to the iso choice field?

how's the 64 bit stuff working out? (remember reading that's what you would be turning your attention to).

Further developing of AFI? As a Side-Job probably possible...

The 64 bit Stuff? Looks nice, but I'm waiting for the FatDog Release befor starting some work on it...

I didn't use it for a long time, so I need to make some testings before I can tell anything about it. Though it should be able to install from ISO to USB or HDD.

Adding a browse function to the iso choice field shouldn't make any problems.

Since I' stumbling on this tonight by this topic, I decided to give some time to this tonight, so I have made an update of AFI Automated Frugal Installer to version 1.0.6.

If all works properly there should be these options.

- choose a drive/partition to install to
- choose ISO by File Selector
- start AFI by right-clicking an ISO file
- - all fields in the GUI will be filled with values then

I did not update the Help Page!

Recently I was trying to explain an inexperienced Puppy Linux user, friend of mine, how to go past booting from the DVD iso to installing frugal. My task would have been easier had I known about this script. I could have just email it to my friend. One thing I learned, and which you might want to incorporate in your dialog, is that my friend didn't know to mount the DVD drive icon before looking for the iso file to select!

I feel the need to do a quote of one of your latest sayings: I'm standing on the shoulders of Giants.

Originally this was a script made by stu90 (which I haven't seen for a long time here). I found this script very useful especially in combination with LazY FReD (Free Repository Downloader for Repositories like smokey01.com). My intention was to add to LazY FReD the ability to install Puppies from recently downloaded ISO files directly to the boot partition of the current running Puppy.

So I grabbed the script made by stu90, made my needed modifications and additions to put it combined with LazY FReD. I decided to not to rename it (keeping original name Automated Frugal Installer) and to name the Topic just LazY FReD 2.0.0 - Free Repository Downloader.

I haven't had a look into the script for a long time, though if I remember correctly the main script code line to access e.g. zigbert's repository was also written by stu90 - and there were two or three more programs when stu90 has given support to me (either in the forum or in background by PM).

So again: I'm standing on the shoulders of Giants.

Regarding the DVD drive to mount issue I can say this:

- a few minutes ago I'd found a non translated (and also wrong) tooltip in the GUI
- this forces me (by myself) to do another update of AFI
- I will add a another combobox for to mount the drive where to search for ISO files
- also I will add to both combobox drive lists a function to mount the chosen drive immediately
- and again also I will create tooltip text for all GUI items

Starting to work on this right after sending this post to the forum.

something you may want to look into, though my experiences were mostly from when i ran Precise 5.5--I often had to rerun/run grub4dos after running AFI (always as a right click utility) to make sure the menu.lst entry was made or took, so to speak. it's not really a problem because the grub4dos run through part is pretty automated, and no one else reported the bug, if that's indeed what it is, but i figured you should know.

anyway, it's a great utility and thanks again. i've used the previous version more times than i can count and will gladly mirror this one and its successor. great and useful little tool.

Can't believe I didn't know about this utility until now. It's really great and makes it super easy to get freinds to set up thier install "frugally". Thanks, RSH!
