Vlc 8.6h lite works fine on Fluppy 003.

There is no dedicated compiling page unfortunately. Most new packages for Lucid Puppy are along that thread. But you could ask playdayz or 01micko about your problems. They are usually very helpful.

Puppy Lupu 501; I downloaded VLC but cannot get it to work yet in/with firefox, although i also took the firefox addon mediaplayer connectivity.. Suppose possible plugins (gxine) may cause a conflict.

I have the same problem with media connectivity on 4.2 as well..
Although it did work on one site, with QuickTime videos..

I also downloaded pulseaudio which sometimes seems to help .... but, like experienced before in SUSE distros, critical dependency base files libiconv perlapi-5.10.0 missing.

Further, i remember from VLC forum, newer ALSA is still under construction.

The mess became too great ... formatting puppy away and new clean install was the quickest solution I saw and of course now without VLC and without pulseaudio.

Vlc 1.0.6 made from the ubuntu binaries works fine in Lucid Puppy.

NOTE: VLC Player only works for me when I have MPlayer installed (from Puppy Package Manager). When I uninstalled Mplayer (thinking I didn't need it) I found that VLC no longer looked or worked the same.

I reinstalled MPlayer and VLC fired right back up.

Strange ... 1.0.6 does NOT work for me; firefox doesnt see it and clicking in menu renders a disformed & frozen window I have to use "kill" against.

Could Ext4 format be of influence? Seems to be the only difference.

MPlayer (other pet) working better than native Gxine; Mplayer removed temporarily for the purpose, VLCplayer removed & reinstalled, 2x computer restart between all actions.

I should add that it only works for me after I have installed Mplayer from the Puppy Package Manager.

When uninstalled MPlayer, VLC no longer worked.
I reinstalled MPlayer and it went right back to working.

I left MPlayer installed. VLC won't work for me without it.
I also have AlsaPlayer installed, although I don't think that has anything to with it.

Added Mplayer again. Opening from menu o.k now. Firefox doesnt see, just uses MPlayer .....

Confusing to me, but *.wmv video so far seems better, more stable than before, no parttime blurrings seen yet.

All a bit complicated, but will keep it this way for the time being.

Pity. Found old 'tricky" wmv streams back on web, that in the good old days got a remark by VLC and were played without sound ... now totally refused.

Uninstalling Firefox Addon Mediaplayer Connectivity which in my experience does not like "plugins" (don't know how to uninstall existing plugins Gxine & Mplayer).

No substantial improvements so far.

Have you downloaded and installed the .Pet file that makes VLC the default video player?

It's at the top of the page, right below the first screenshot. Shouldn't need a Firefox plugin after that.

Maybe/maybenot; lost count and meanwhile removed everything "vlc" ... not the first time and not my first distro.

Think i really better wait till ALSA -,-,24 is available.

But i already had a much newer pet/VLC a few hours ago, which did not work either in puppy lupu 501, although I must believe it was good for at least puppy-4-series.

Trust Rémy on VLC forum knows best: recent VLC not compatible with antiquated ALSA (version - - 24 or higher required).

I've been looking for a lighter mediaplayer for Dpup, and I found that this VLC pet installs and plays mp3s without a hitch. I did some tests to compare its use of resources with that of mplayer. I ran VLC from the commandline and mplayer from its GUI.

For an mp3, top showed VLC using 12% CPU and 17% MEM and mplayer using 14% CPU and 5% MEM (and bmp used 18% CPU and 8% MEM).

But I need help in interpreting the results from Puppy's htop ....

The Puppy Process Manager uses htop and showed only 1 process for mplayer, viz., gmplayer
but nine VLC processes while running VLC. The highest VLC process was using 18% CPU and 3.2% MEM, the next used from 3% to 5% CPU and 3.2% MEM and the remainder were as shown below. Should I add all of these together to find the total usage by VLC, or would this be counting some resources multiple times?

Regardless, it seems that the installed mplayer is little different from VLC in its CPU loading but mplayer uses much less memory, at least when playing mp3s. I tried an mp4 video clip that works with mplayer, but VLC complains: no suitable decoder module for fourcc 'avc1'

Edit: just out of interest, I started mplayer from the CLI and top shows mplayer using 0% CPU and 4% MEM so I guess this means mplayer is already among the lightest mmplayers?

The conclusion is that I would need your VLC pet (vlc-0.8.6h-engv5-1) recompiled with live555:

....and using the configure options: I really hate to ask, but is there any way that you (or any other kind soul with the know-how) could rebuild it, incorporating the two modifications listed above?

I've noticed that I can watch Apple Trailers, but still can't seem to stream RTSP.

Would still like (love, actually) a VLC PET built with live555 -- hence the request.

Not sure which will come first -- one magically appears or I learn how to do it myself. We'll see.
