I wish! I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure that one out, and I haven't got much hair to start with, so it's pretty serious already!

Wireless is the LAST major bug to be squashed in 4.2, and the only thing that keeps us from being just one RC away from a Final release. Pretty much everything else has been sorted one way or the other.

Hope the jwm-beta is good enough for an onboard option, it's a nice piece of work
Not this trip, 'f00, but I'm keeping my eye on what Patriot's doing there. It's looking pretty darn good IMHO. I just don't want to risk destabilising 4.2 at this late juncture.

Cheers.

Bonjour,
@ ttuuxxx
Having localized 3 files in the directory /usr/local/petget, can you give me the changes you've made, if they were made in one of these files :
check_deps.sh, installpreview.sh, pkg_chooser.sh, to update them.
Cordialement ;)

First I need to brag about my age - 73.

Then I need to claim a senior moment allowance.

My printer is now working perfectly. Reason? I forgot that the driver needs libtiff.so.4, which I installed ages ago on 4.1, updated to 4.11, updated to 4.12. But I used a new pup-save for 4.2, and forgot about the lib.

So thanks everyone- Puppy 4.2 is great!! It's a keeper!

it was petget that has been changed lines 467,468, now states
HOWEVER, you need to 'Refresh Menus' to see it
(just above the Shutdown button in the menu)
you won't have to worry about the extra servers, since they are url names:)

Senior moment allowance granted with interest! :P I'm really glad it's working for you, gerry... and you SHOULD be bragging about still being fully engaged and willing to try new ideas at age 73! I'll settle for just getting there in ANY condition!

Good news, mate! I'm also pleased to see that we don't really have any showstoppers outstanding for the next release, apart from the wireless issues. I've PM'd tempestuous for some advice on that one, because a number of the problematic drivers are built into the kernel and haven't changed since 4.12 when they apparently worked?!?

Do you need something compiled ? for wireless? if so just name it.

Ok ppl's
Im using an open network

I am not real savvy in the command line nor am i that grg8 at debugging...
in regards to wifi
but here goes:

1) the wifi auto scanner appears to be locked in to 127.0.0.0 *
2) the iwconfig -a command comes up with no access point
3) it also comes up with no mac address.
4) attempting to put in to the wizard manually essid=default, channel=6 doesnt help.
5) autoconnect profile doesnt allow for OPEN network only WEP

* -it does not appear to,look for any other IP address what so ever
** - from what I can gather it is in either the autoconnect section of the wizard and or in the hardware ID section..
it may also be in a bodged module of the rt61 for me as it appears to show the right module just does not aquire a MAC address or hardware ID...

I really hope this helps..

a point of reference for me has been v4.0 as this works...

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 714#280714
this post has my read out for v4 and 4.2rc1 ....
Im hoping you can get this fixed really soon so I can use it to show others.....

So we are not so much puppy's as old dogs learning new tricks - who said we couldn't!! - 46 next week!
http://www.hiawatha-webserver.org/howto
"3.4 Server options
...
Hiawatha will drop root privileges after startup by switching to user nobody. You can tell Hiawatha to switch to another user via de ServerId option"

This implies that Hiawatha is running as nobody when no ServerId is specified. What happens when ServerId is removed from the httpd.conf and Hiawatha restarted? It serves - in Unnamed at least. But runs as 65534!

Is nobody made correctly?
I also noted WhoDo's idea for running as hiawatha as root.

I tried on a fresh frugal:

1. changeing /etc/hiawatha/httpd.conf line for ServerId=root

result:

Code: Select all

There was an error when attempting to start Hiawatha, this error message:

Syntax error in httpd.conf on line 8
also tried ServerId = root:root to the same result. Hiawatha is specifically prohibited from running as root.

2. I ditched the ServerId line althogether - and indeed hiawatha runs happily as nobody anyway.

Code: Select all

nobody 3841 1 0 15:27 ? 00:00:00 hiawatha
BUT .... attempting to run PPLOG or access http://127.0.0.1/index.html

Code: Select all

403 - Forbidden
the error log in /var/log/hiawatha/error.log shows:

Code: Select all

Sat 07 Mar 2009 15:27:41 +0800|127.0.0.1|/root/httpd/hiawatha/blog/pup_pplog.pl|access denied via filesystem
The same snag ... permissions preventing hiawatha reading the files it is supposed to serve? What the...

In beta 1 when hiawatha was excluded at least I could install the .pet and get a running web-server. I can't even do that with RC1??

This old dog is stumped! Please someone throw me a bone :-D

FWIW-Wireless has always worked for me on all Puppy distros on my laptop, until this one. RC1 doesn't work and neither did the beta before it, I downloaded it and tried it.

But, using RC1 and plugging in a Belkin 803.11g usb wireless thingy, it DID work. So wireless does work with RC1, just not with the ipw2200 wireless thingy like I have.

Again fwiw: Using RC1:

onboard wireless ipw2200: wireless doesn't work

USB plug wireless Belkin 803.11g: wireless does work.

Frickin' Frackin' ....

After hours upon hours of fiddling to synchronise 4 separate desktop icon themes for Puppy-4.2 (Deep Thought, Original, Stardust & JQ8FlatLite), I've discovered the reason why (if not the How) the menu icons get screwed up when you switch themes and don't get fixed when you switch back. It's the /usr/sbin/icon_switcher app itself.

There is something screwy going on in the code the way Barry has it working, but I'm not familiar enough with Bash to work it out. It copies icons from one theme over the top of the other on the way in, but doesn't copy the same icons back on the way back. Instead it "manufactures" copies of the x48 size icons to replace the x24 ones in the menu ... well some of the time! That's a hangover from Barry's original intention to use a single SVG file and have the script create the x24 and x48 sized icons required for the menus and desktop respectively. Since all icon themes are now PNG only, that functionality seems superfluous.

Anyone want to take a crack at this so the icons of each theme are simply copied over the ones in /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps each time there's a theme change? Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

After much banging of my head I finally figured out what is wrong with wireless for the rtl8187 driver.

Now, the r8187 driver loads by default with my netgear WG111V2 in puppy4.2. This is not compiled into the kernel in 4.1.2 but later added as a pet. It shows up in the Network wizard as RTL8187. Confused? I was. Did an lsmod and it shows up as r8187. Tried ndiswrapper, no go, but I try to avoid using it anyway.

I blacklisted the r8187 and went through the driver list and lo and behold there is the old rtl8187 driver. Now that one works! Just didn't think to look. Just don't know why the newer driver gets loaded for my hardware.

Anyway, that is another issue off the list WhoDo!

Cheers
