Note to Barry Kauler....

I don't know if this is significant but I found two gtkhash
pet packages made by tuuxx
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 42&t=32700
that cause recent puppies such as Racy and Slacko
to not install some pets properly.

An example of a pet that won't install properly is stu90's makepet
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=47613

or my Right-click5.4.pet
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67013

I think it was caused by an incompatible pet specs file inside the
gtkhash pet.

Just installed Racy on my Dell Vostro 1510. Everything works great. Well, everything but the B43 Broadcom wireless but that's to be expected. I'm getting pretty used to that. Just need to figure out how to get it working under Puppy.

Thanks!

In a terminal try

Code: Select all

modprobe b43
dmesg
if the output from dmesg shows that the b43 firmware has been loaded try a connect tool - sns or network wizard are available in racy (frisbee works best for me but would need to be installed from pets).

If this gets you online then make it permanent by putting the
modprobe b43
line into /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Hey! Thanks for the reply.

Right after installation, I tried using the network tools and they were unable to find the wireless device.

I didn't think about doing a modprobe to see if the firmware had been loaded. I'll give it a try.

Thanks!

No luck on b43 firmware. I thought the 3.x kernel would have included the drivers.

To fix Racy, use the Internet Connection Wizard from the setup menu. Choose Connect by wired/wireless LAN. Choose Network Wizard, NOT Simple Network Setup. From the next screen, choose the 'load module' button. From there, find the B43 module you need, load it and then follow the on screen prompts to configure it. It should work from there and survive re-boots.

The drivers and firmware are there - it's just that the k3 kernels do not seem to load them automagically.

Try the suggestions from DaveS

Thanks! Puppy actually makes it rather easy to load modules.

Thanks for the help! That fixed it. Racy is extremely fast on my Vostro 1510!

Software Sanity Check

It is amazing how responsive the system is on this notebook Acer Aspire 1350 (Processor: Mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+) when using Racy 5.2.2.

In order to proceed I am doing an application checking and have found out that one of the most convenient tools I use is in fact is working on Racy, i.e. zim.

Here my short list of software I tried to get working on Racy 5.2.2, further down some software that did not work together with few lines of error messages related to it. If the file name is mentioned, I copied it over from the forum or other close-by sources. If ppm is mentioned in the file-name I installed it via the Package Management System of Racy Puppy.

Software that started correctly and apparently works ok:
  • claws-mail (work in progress, basic setup done - see posting of above)
    AppStarter-1.2.pet
    calcurse.pet
    cryptsetup-1.0.5.pet
    cwm-cvs01122011.pet
    device_mapper-1.02.27.pet
    dillo-3.0-i686.pet
    emelfm2-0.7.4-p5-20101129.pet
    *(Firefox-8.pet - possibly conflicts with seamonkey)
    htop-0.9-i486.ppm
    keepassx-0.4.3.pet
    mfc490cwcupswrapper-1.1.2-2.i386.deb
    mfc490cwlpr-1.1.2-2.i386.deb
    mlocate-0.23.pet
    odt2txt-0.4-i486.pet
    qt4-4.5.3-1-w5.ppm
    ROX-Filer-2.10-racy-099-i686-cleaned-G-bit-unset-luci218.pet
    shrink-1.1.pet
    tigervnc-1.0.0-i486.pet
    truecrypt-7.1-20111030.pet
    vifm-0.61.pet
    vim-73-bkl-w5.ppm
    *(EDITED makes sqlite3 unasble, if zim is uninstalled sqlite3 works again zim-lucid-0.5.0.pet)

These packages did not work:
  • e17-62731.pet
    ExifTool-8.26.pet
    fotowall-0.9.8.pet
    *(WORKS geeqie-1.0-i486.ppm)
    imlib2-1.4.5.pet
    Psip32-1.2-Lucid.pet
    umplayer-0.9.6.pet
    vim_7.3.206_no_gui.pet (I then discovered that vim 7.3 is included in PPM, see above)
    wbar-2.2.2.pet
    xplanet-1.2.1.4_5.X.8.sfs
Error messages:
umplayer: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by /opt/qt4/lib/libQtGui.so.4)
vim: error while loading shared libraries: libacl.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

*(EDITED: works on fresh racy install: geeqie-1.0
new image loader 0x827ec78, bufsize=4096 idle_loop=1
exif read /initrd/mnt/dev_save/racysoftware/geeqie-1.0-i486.ppm, sidecar: -
Segmentation fault)

*(EDITED: error due to zim installation sqlite3: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.11' not found (required by /lib/libreadline.so.6)

I did also try to get gpodder working, after - still mysteriously - I got it working on the mini computer Asus 700 with macpup 528 including long series of additional manual installs. I tried to reverse engineer the successful installation of gpodder 3 but then still with no prevail. I would welcome to get it working on racy, though.

* note on edit 20111204: geeqie worked on a fresh install. sqlite3 also works as long as zim-lucid-0.5.0.pet does not get installed. So I am still looking for a zim pet for racy, as the deb file from the web-site http://zim-wiki.org/downloads.html throws an error about not finding modules (using python from dev-sfs)

Once used, never forgotten.
On the other hand, have you tried EudoraOSE yet? Still the choice of professionals!

Recordmydesktop works, it needs the devx loaded for python, Gtk-RecordMyDesktop-0.3.8-Lucid.pet and it needs libjack for sound libjack-0.0.23.pet

ttuuxxx's gtkhash would not install for me with woof. I later discovered that his pet contains a .config/rox.sourceforge.net/SendTo folder that is not symlinked while, in recent puppies, that folder is symlinked to the .config/rox.sourceforge.net/OpenWith folder. This is what is causing the breaking of other Right-click options in Rox-Filer. I have been informed, by another forum member that the SendTo folder should not be a symlink. However, woof builds recent pups with this directory-structure.

incomplete USB3 support, mystery filesystem error messages

Following a private suggestion for solving my Puppy USB3 problems, I've just downloaded and tried Racy 5.2.2_k3.1 in LiveCD mode, primarily to test its native USB3 support.

It will recognized and mount devices on the USB3 expresscard port on my laptop without any error messages. However, when I copy files on the ntfs Goflex drive (whether on the USB3 port or on USB2), it pops up the following error message in red text:
Operation not supported; failed to copy /mnt/sdxx/xxxx.jpg
In fact, the file is copied successfully, and can also be deleted again. However, this popup occurs every time on both of my PCs.

When I mount this drive on USB2 or USB3 using Slacko_5.29.6, there is no such error message.

In order for the USB3 devices to be recognized by Racy 5.2.2, they must be attached and powered up at bootup. And if removed and reattached after initial recognition, they aren't recognized again. There's no such problem with the USB2 port.

gtk+ installation problems

I have tried to compile claws-mail 3.7.10cvs112 but "make" fails:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=588483

The error message when compiling
http://pastebin.com/vDp3w9nH

When discussing this in the claws-mail irc channel, I got the hint that

when building, according to the pc file, i believe it expects to find gdkpixbuf.h here: /usr/include/gtk-2.0/include/gdkpixbuf.h
...what is true is that gdkpixbuf.h is not in the position that the pc file reports it to be

this is my gtk+-2.0.pc :
http://pastebin.com/6Xmci6Jh

Code: Select all

# cat /usr/lib/pkgconfig/gtk+-2.0.pc
prefix=/usr
exec_prefix=${prefix}
libdir=${exec_prefix}/lib
includedir=${prefix}/include
target=x11

gtk_binary_version=2.10.0
gtk_host=i486-t2-linux-gnu

Name: GTK+
Description: GTK+ Graphical UI Library (${target} target)
Version: 2.20.1
Requires: gdk-${target}-2.0 atk cairo gio-2.0 pangoft2
Libs: -L${libdir} -lgtk-${target}-2.0
Cflags: -I${includedir}/gtk-2.0

Can this be a racy problem or is it something else?

That simply means the permissions were not maintainted - file permissions are lost when copying from ext2/ext3/etc to NTFS or FAT partitions... It is nothing to worry about in most cases...
