Yes, even banks that use Open Source software require Java in clients.

So a Puppy with built-in Java client should do the job for these banks... Some testing will be needed, of course.

I like your line, "If your [OS] goes down, boot up with Puppy".

The input from you guys is helpful.
I tend to think about what I want for myself, and tailor Puppy accordingly.
Also I'm a minimalist.

Yes, for the great majority of people out there, with reasonably modern PCs with 256M RAM, a Chubby Puppy is probably the way to go, with OpenOffice ...and ...(gag).... Java.
I don't like Java personally, but Sun has a heavy investment in it and they are making it difficult for OpenOffice to work fully without it.

The main problem with GCJ currently is SWING apps ... But most other stuff (including the Eclipse IDE which uses SWT) works fine.

The classpath showcase mentions JAM ... I believe it doesn't perform very well, but it is very small and I believe I could create a pretty small JAM+ClassPath package so maybe I should take a look

Jikes, JamVM, ClassPath and Cairo (required for Swing) compiled fine.

Although it is slow as hell (gives Java a bad name), the results REALLY impressed me... I tested it with a relly complex app (JEdit).

I'll be creating a package for this soon, I have no idea how big it'll be as "classpath" seems to have changed a lot ...

Will be waiting for that in the Announcements (or dotPUP) sections. Some benchmark of performance may be useful, for example, against these compact processors by Intel.

The purpose of this within Puppy is to offer a Java JM with a good set of features and a small footprint... That also happens to be "truly" free.

Personally I still think it would be better to re-build the GCC in the usr_devx.sfs to a recent version with GCJ enabled, but I am not the man to do this

Well, back to the Puppy Foundation topic....

A main goal/reason for this foundation was to set up a new server because of problems with Wikka Wakka Wiki on goosee.com. Back in March there was a topic on the original forum about that. Since then other workarounds have been posted to the Wikka Workaround page that might help. Well, worth a try, eh?

Guess people are just busy (especially Barry) with version 1.0.5. After the new version is posted, the Wiki change of server may be addressed already...

Has anything happened with incorporating the fix into our code yet? The wiki is working Ok for me now (Sat, 0740 GMT) but I expect it will break (for me) in another 4+ hours.

I wonder if it has... or is it school holidays in Aust? The wiki has been working pretty happily for me this weekend and that's unusual. Here's hoping it stays working Ok.

Can someone give me some advice.
Their "4U" plan at $99 per year looks great, but it has a couple of major
differences from the other plans:

ASP: No
Shell access: Yes

What is the significance of the No on the first one?
Does shell access mean I can telnet to the site?

Barry, you won't need ASP for a wiki and yes, that should mean you can telnet if you want to. I like http://www.site5.com/ for hosting. I resell some domains to there and I've rarely had any interruptions in 12 months. I've found CPanel more user friendly than Ensim.

ASP is Active Server Pages a Microsoft server sided technology that we do not require as we would be using safer open source alternatives.

I must say as an avid forum user that Johns ISP have proved themselves to be fast and reliable. Top company.

If possible I would wait for:

1. Someone to just buy and donate a years space to the foundation
2. The Puppy Promotion week may have a donation drive.
3. Raffy is out begging . . .

What I would like is a server with access for Barry, Raffy, The Secretaries and Public Relations Officer (I elected myself - the vote was carried unanamously) and developers requiring access. It may be that not everyone requires access - for example the trustees.

Once the Server is paid for the wiki moves and then we would use one of the Puppy domain names for the wiki AND take over responsibility for paying this.

Hope that makes some sort of sense
