Puppy Garbage Arcade

#41 Post by alekie »

Apparently the issue is that this "operating system" does not come with the tools necessary to run it from scratch. There is no tool for partitioning and formatting the hard drive which is just plain stupid. There is no guide for installing this garbage. If you use the wrong version of grub with ext2 you get errors up the ass.
The "Universal Installer" doesn't do a damned thing.

I vote this garbage as 0/10

You could click on "Menu->Setup->Puppy Package Manager", then simply scroll down to the "gparted-0.3.3" packages and choose one..

Nice job on this, I really like it, in fact, I am using it for classic gaming than Windows now. The only problem I have is that Puppy Arcade does not load up my save file. I have tried doing a frugal install, and a full install, neither of them worked.

How can I fix this?

did you download the fixed version 9? If so, this should not happen, and you'd need to investigate a little more..

If not, you can install the bugfixes found in the first post of this thread.. The problem was a dodgy rc.shutdown file, and a dodgy entry in DISTRO_SPECS..

You could try deleting the /etc/DISTRO_SPECS file, or making sure the pup prefix is "pup_" (including the underscore)...

Hope it helps, if not get back on here and let me know.

can't install to hdd

#45 Post by radrmr »

I have been trying to install puppy arcade for some time now.
The install seems to go fine, but after I reboot - nothing happens. no boot menu, no grub - just an 'operating system not found' type error.

I have tried version 9 fixed, 9, and 8 so far. I haven't gotten any of them to work. I have tried SATA and PATA hdds; as I have learned newer kernels name devices differently, which might confuse grub.

I have tried on several different computers. just in case.

A summary of my methods.
First I had been using GParted live to delete all partitions, format ext2 and set boot flag.

Then I boot the puppy arcade live cd, and click 'install to hdd'
I select install to internal ide or sata drive,

then accept all the defaults from there.
I have tried putting grub on the MBR and /boot. Niether has worked.

after the install, no errors are reported and everything looks fine. I have tried to poke at grub manually, but there is no '/boot/grub/menu.lst'

I don't know where to look next, and I would really like to try puppy arcade.

any ideas?

thanks in advance.

Advanced MAME on Puppy

#46 Post by battlecat »

Hi:

I have been using Ubuntu as my primary OS to run my MAME cabinet. I would like to try Puppy out as I hear it is less resource intensive than Ubuntu and might help out some of the games.

I am using an older Compaq Deskpro EN with a P3-800mgz and 512Mb ram. I prefer to use Advanced MAME with Wah!Cade.

Can I get these two programs to work on Puppy? Are there pre-built packages for them on some puppy repo somewhere?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks!

still no install

#48 Post by radrmr »

I am still trying to install puppy arcade, with no luck.

now instead of using a gparted live cd, i have tried using fdisk.
I think it goes well.
I select 'd' to delete all partiotions
select 'n' to make a new partition, the entire disk, of type 83 (also tried 82)
then select 'a' to make it bootable.
then select 'w' to write changes to disk and exit.

After this i run the puppy universal installer, and get the message 'no partitions on drive sda"

don't know where to go from here.
any ideas?

time to get creative

#49 Post by radrmr »

well, I have puppy arcade finally booting.

After much frustration, and gparted, super grub disk, fdisk, manual edit menu.lst ; I saw I had an ubuntu 10.4 disk lying on the desk.
So, I installed puppy as usual, but when I got to the end, when grub installs, I clicked cancel.

Then I installed ubuntu in a small partition.
finally, through ubuntu, I set puppy as the default boot option with a 1 second timeout.

after reboot, puppy launched just fine.

effective - yes
efficient - no

There is more than one way to skin a cat.

There seems to be an issue with opened windows leaving a background image on the desktop, when they have overlapped the wbar.

Also, I was wondering if it'd be possible to recreate the drive icons (hdd, usb, floppy, cd/dvd-rom) on the desktop?

I attempted to move the WBAR to the horizontal-top of the screen. =

I then tried to add the drive icons to the desktop, and re-align. = X

I then tried to turn off the auto-hide on the taskbar. = X

There was some message about the auto-hide config being corrupted, and it reverted to the default.

Can I do anything to fix these issues?

Right click on Wbar to refresh it.. It's just one of those things you can't avoid - it's wbar, not Puppy.

Yes, you need to re-enable the desktop through ROX settings, and to make sure the "PuppyPin" file is right.. And somethings else (Can't remember what at the mo, not on Puppy...) I'll get back to ya!
Reaperz wrote:I attempted to move the WBAR to the horizontal-top of the screen. =
OK, good..
Reaperz wrote:I then tried to add the drive icons to the desktop, and re-align. = X
Again, I'll get back to you on this! It's been a year or so since I played with these settings, myself...
Reaperz wrote:I then tried to turn off the auto-hide on the taskbar. = X
You should just be able to edit "/root/.jwmrc" of the other jwm settings file (found next to /root/jwmrc, has the word 'tray' in the name)

At the top, there is an autohide="true" bit... Just change it to false and restart jwm or X..

I will get back to you with a more detailed description when I am on Puppy.. But yes, all these can be fixed, aside from the Wbar overlapping-issue (again, jsut right-click on wbar to refresh)

Not that I know of... We have GXMAME, SDLMAME (+MAMEPGUI), and that's about it... Other packages are uncompiled or don't work well in Puppy.

Well I did that, and it seemed to work...

But every time the x server gets restarted, the auto-hide returns.

I've modified the 'tray', and 'tray-previous' files to reflect this. It doesn't matter, because something resets the files to "true".

I'm not sure where these files are being reset from, but it's very irritating. Although I assume this is a TurbPup issue really, and not a Puppy arcade one.

Also... does anyone else have an issue where their USB flash drive, or modem, will not detect in Pmount 'unless' it's plugged in when the PC is booted?

BTW - If it's not too much to ask, could you include the latest ScummVM in your next release? There have been a ton of bug fixes, and a few games added.

MAME Problem

#54 Post by adsflkjasdf »

I am using the Puppy Aracde MAME loader and attempt to open a MAME game, but it always gives me the error "The selected game is missing one or more required ROM or CHD images. Please select a different game."

Can anyone shed some light on what might me going on here?

You're either missing the ROM files/archive for that particular title, or your ROM files/archive for that particular title are missing updated files.

Note that Puppy Arcade does not include the ROM files for any games.

Yes I realize that it does not.

However, I did not realize that having what I believe to be a MAME ROM could be missing the ROM file. This is not how it works with other Roms (such as Nintendo).

The ROM file I do have appears to be a zip file filled with .bin files.

How can I know if the MAME ROMs I have actually have the ROM file with them?

Also, what is this about updated files? This also seems to be in contrast to how any other ROM I've ever used works (such as Nintendo).

How can I know which version Puppy Arcade requires?

With MAME (and occasionally, other arcade emulators), the images are often updated/added to as they work on the emulation, they redump the images due to misdumps (or discover that something's missing), or even just decide to rename the images to better represent where they should go, etc. Often, it's just a matter of missing color/palette ROMs.

Edit: Here's what the developers have to say about it: http://mamedev.org/devwiki/index.php/FA ... he_ROMs.3F

I couldn't tell you which version of MAME Arcade 9 uses, though sc0ttman should be able to. You'll need to make sure they're at least specified to work with that version. ROMs specified to work with later versions may work, but no guarantees, as there may have been renamed files since that version.

SDLMAME is installed by default, but other versions can be added.

I have had more luck with the GXMAME package, especially with CPS2 and NeoGeo roms (Street Fighter, Metal Slug, etc)..

GXMAME can be installed easily using the 'MAME-Setup' button on the 'QuickStart' dialog.

(And my good friend Makoto is right, there are different ROM files around for the same games, different versions containing different sets of files.

Romkeeper was a great website for helping track down missing files, as all ROMs were in a nice database, letting you find the 'original' and 'clone' versions..

Clone versions also require the original, as they don't contain all the files.)

I haven't forgot about this and will get back to you. But look at '/root/.jwm' and '/etc/xdg/templates'..
In these folders are jwm_config files, although I dont think these affect the tray...

Not had that one myself with my USBs (dont have a lot to test with though..)

I was referring to the MAME version number, actually. :)
