Thanks for report nooby, so people with same specs as yours should avoid it.

Not easy to really know. I mean what if somebody really knowing how to set up BIOS would look at my BIOS set up and tell me change that thing to yes and that one to no and then it will work better?

I have no idea about if bios makes it behave like this.

Many puppies do work with my computer out of the box.
So maybe something like drivers is missing.

Jemimah when she did Fluppy added a lot of drivers. Pemasu when he made Snow added same drivers Jemimah had for puppu 430 while pemasu added them to lupu511 instead and he also used things from lupu525 so Snow is a very good general distro that workd on most gear.

Lupu failed to boot 1 out of 10 times until I put nosmp on the kernel line.
Snowpup needs none such never fails. Dpup failed to boot two times out of three try now today. So something seems missing for the version of Netbooks that I have.

BIOS shouldn't affect lan card, but drivers - kernel modules yes so probably your Atheros model doesn't have compatible kernel module in dpup.
I don't know how to add one
Must gain some knowledge in kernel and modules compiling before I can resolve issues like this.
But many people already used and like dpup484 and this one should work well enough for them.

Yes as I sad I don't feel happy to give you this sad news.
The others are so happy and here I come with a disaster of report. Not a friendly guy that Nooby.

I have compiled the kernle 2.6.38.6 to support dpup 485,it is work well,I compiled the kernel from debian-6.0.1.
if you need it I will upload. and you can gibe me email.

Sounds good, if you have some instructions how to replace the current one. From what Iguleder said I understand it's not just matter of replacing kernel binaries.

dejan555, you should change two:
1 change kernel modules in "initrd.gz" you can do like this:
gzip -d initrd.gz #then you will get initrd file
cpio -i -d < initrd # then you will get rootfs,delete the kernel modules in /lib/modules/XXX ,put the newer kernel into,with only basic modules.such as useful fs(aufs squashfs ....) drivers(....). I can help you to do this if you like.
2 change modules in XXX.sfs, do like this:
unsquashfs XXX.sfs /somewhere. delete the kernel modules in /lib/modules/, then put the newer kernel into there. change firmware in /lib/, the last step is mksquashfs somewhere XXX.sfs

It include: vmlinuz-2.6.38.6, lib/modules/2.6.38.6, Chinese font,firmware,System.map-2.6.38.6

note. The drivers"ext2/ext3/ext4" have been built as modules. So you can add "modprobe ext2/etx3/ext4" in init script.

I will try to do this switch on my own with your instructions, if I fail I'll send you initd.
So you compiled it on debian, is it properly patched for puppy, did you already test it with dpup?

Yes, I have patched the kernel to support puppy.
I will send your the kernel headers later.
you know that I have no space to upload the kernel sources. about a month ago I sent kernel sources to Pemasu.He upload it to his space
I have spent lots of time in compiling newer kernel to support puppy(lupu Spup Dpup puppy), now it is more perfict.
I test it by full install of Dpup, but the iso have been delete.I am sure it will works for Dpup. If you find something wrong I will compile it agian.

OK, cool so I'll put together new iso tonight probably.

Finally frugal installed the 485.
My application environment works ok.

One question tho: Is sfs installer the same thing as load sfs on the fly?
If not, what are the differences?

Maybe I missed something, but in the shutdown menu I don't find 'restart JWM'.
It's not very handy to go to the X-prompt and type xwin as every running program is closed then.
In the advanced tab of shutdown, there is a seconf cancel which could become restart JWM.

I have been working with 485 for quite some time.
All of a sudden without some real reason, I heard the fan blowing more and more until it was at full speed all the time.
The CPU temp raise to 88°C.

I closed all programs, but the fan was still at full speed and the temp at 88°C.

Htop didn't indicate an excessive CPU usage.

It was only when I restared X that things went to normal.

Very scary.

Scary indeed , this happened to anyone else?

havent tested it long enough to get hot.
