Further clarification on Pup-Shots.Selecting a region results in a zero byte file but fullscreen works and the shot can then be edited.

excellent job on testing James :)
I'll look into pupshots, sata works on my pc's, did sata work properly on your older pc using top9 or is this a new issue for top10, The kernel in 2.14x was one of the first kernels to use sata but I think it has its limits.
its worked on my 1tb sata and on my 320gb laptop sata.

Thanks a lot.

I got the below (FBReader does work)

Code: Select all

I compiled the latest FBReader and had those errors, then I compiled the latest sqlite and then recompiled FBReader and still had those errors, but they don't effect the operation of FBReader. so probably a no biggy.

Good, ttuuxxx, thanks a lot. and also to tomo3.
You-all are doing a tremendous service to us users.

I guess the latest FBReader is the "12.10" version?
I just got that one (technosaurus - Aug 30, 2010) for my other computer, which is from 2004 and can run Lucid Puppy 5.28; that FBReader works OK, as I recall.

The one on this (214X-TOP10) computer is, I think, version 12.8; a little older?

[Somehow certain software doesn't run on this (1998) hardware; eg Firefox: "illegal instruction"]

I could try again to run the 12.10 FBReader here, or, is your brand-new version available?

I'm not going to try to understand what you folks do, with compiling and sqlite and gtk and static libraries and such!

Many thanks, again.

Sheldon

Here's the one I compiled first try it without the new sqlite and report if it works, then if doesn't try the new sqlite.

I still get the:

Code: Select all

~> /usr/bin/FBReader
loading /usr/lib/zlibrary/ui/zlui-gtk.so
SQLITE IMPLEMENTATION ERROR: (10) disk I/O error
SQLITE IMPLEMENTATION ERROR: in command "COMMIT TRANSACTION"
~>
When run from a terminal prompt, after exiting either FBReader ver 12.8 or your new 12.10, the SQLITE IMPLEMENTATION ERROR: is shown.

But with the 12.10, there's also a segmentation fault, and the program quits. It does load initially, but certain menu choices cause the exiting.

I guess my ASUS P5A with AMD K6-2 has some problem with some software.

For the time being, I'm back with FBReader 12.8

Many thanks,
Sheldon

I haven't gotten around to doing a test install on a sata box yet, the non-booting was the live cd using a sata dvd drive. But, posting now live pfix=ram on another sata box....booted no problem.

Hi ttuuxxx
I just stumbled upon something called underdog, which was in 2 series puppies.
Barry has revived it, but it may still be in 214x init ram code?

Maybe ttuuxxx has done some hacking to his initrd file in 2.14X or perhaps he has some optimized code in his bootconfigurations.
If you want to find out, I suggest asking him. I guess I cannot help you with the long delay. Please let the rest of us know if you find out, or better yet, let Barry know so that he can upload a fix to woof (if applicable).
(This was apropos of my trying SolidPup on my 1998 ASUS P5A computer)

I'm now back to 214X via MBR.

But the question of why (later?) kernels have the booting delay remains.

I tried 214X Top 10 as well.
I did a frugal install of it.
The problem I face is, it never stays with other puppies.
Always 214X finds pup save file of other puppies and forcibly uses them.

How to tame 214X puppy?

Any suggestions how to use it nicely?

Sincerely,
Srinivas Nayak
